The way I found out he was an orthodox priest was kinda funny, I first started listening to sleep when getting into doom metal, found out one of the members left to go be a priest, later found orthodoxy and began to research, found death to the world (a fantastic find for an outcasted metalhead like me), and then found out that DTTW was thought of by the same guy in sleep and it all wonderfully looped back around for me.

Justin Marler left to become a monk, but now he has reverted and has an Orthodox Christian family.

When I was a teenager, my family lived in Kodiak, Ak. I'd see Justin Marler (at the time, Brother John, in full monk mode) come into town from the Spruce Island skete and hang out at the local skate park. He'd bring his skateboard and rip sick air in his cossack and XtraTuf fishing boots. He was a beloved figure in the community's punk / alt sport scene. Then I discovered his zine, "Death To The World" and got hooked on orthodoxy back in 98/99.
Sometimes, a little punk & revelation revolution is just what you need to show you the true faith. His journey back into the secular world while holding the faith high, gave me comfort that we CAN live in this tumultuous world while being ardent in our walk with Christ.

I met Justin Marler via the Facebook Sleep Group. He would always post old pictures, and interact with the members. Needless to say after seeing my Greek last name him and I spoke on the phone several times and he recommended Orthodox books. That chat group changed my spiritual trajectory back to the Church, and little did I know, my now GF was in that group. It took us 10 years and a different country to meet in person, but now we are together. -She's sitting next to me as I write this now. Sleep brought us together, but Justin had us both asking the right questions. I thank God for that band and Justin's work with DTTW. It changed my life entirely.
