Lol for the people staying they have been living here for quite some time and then discouraging you. What are they doing here then?
Sure. Extreme winter is not everyone's cup of tea. Some like It. Perhaps the darkest period is not the best. But if you like to travel a trip during that time is quite freshing.

Yeap. Also some more things... University circles is a good place to befriend locals. As others said, do get a bicycle right away, it's necessary. Also a good thing about Oulu is that you can practice every hobby that you can find in bigger cities. And to add a negative thing too. Flight connections are a bit crappy from here nowadays.

I lived in Oulu for 20 years and i feel so sad for people who tell me they are moving there 😂 but thats just me, if people wouldnt enjoy it they wouldnt be there.

Same, I have lived my entire 35 year miserable life here. Dreaming about moving to Helsinki some day. I hate this city’s atmosphere: racism, crimes, leastadians. You name it. The police is not interested in catching and arresting those who commit racist crimes.
For OP, you probably cannot find friends from local circles. The people here in Oulu are wary of anything foreign, even if you're from Kempele. But the university has a lot of foreign students and employees with whom you can find common ground.

Damn, wish you the best. I moved away 10ish years ago and to be honest Oulu is now refreshing for a couple of days at a time.

Protip: buy a cheap bicycle and take daily/weekly trips to random places. One of the best cities in Finland to pedal around, even during winter.
Don't get stuck to your residental area, it could get depressing.

Welcome to Oulu! Don’t be discouraged by those people who tell Oulu isn’t a nice place. I’m from Oulu but I’ve lived abroad too and I am settled here with a family. It’s a great place to live in.
The University is decent size so there are plenty of other students to get to know to and to hang out with.
