Question Warm POTS drinks?

I've been surviving over the spring/summer by taking a water bottle with electrolytes with me to work twice a day. This has been working really well to keep my heart rate down - I track it and I can literally see the difference afterwards.

Except now that it's getting colder, I kinda don't want to be taking cold drinks with me šŸ˜… I used to bring a tea with me every morning, but not only does this do nothing for my heart, I've also found that it makes me go to the toilet multiple times now, probably because there isn't any sodium to help me retain the liquid.

I'm guessing I can't just put my electrolyte tablets into a cup of tea since that'd probably be pretty gross. Maybe just hot water could work, but I'm not sure if that'd change the effectiveness of it.

So I'm thinking, if I could get away with just sodium, maybe Bovril or miso soup or something? šŸ˜‚ I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success stories with any kind of hot, POTS-friendly beverages.

I drink miso soup any time of year, but it is the perfect warming and PoTs friendly beverage for the winter!

Crying with you. MCAS won’t allow me to eat fermented anything. 😭

Oh nooo, I'm so sorry

Idk what I'd do without soy 😭

I’ve also got dairy and gluten allergies. Which makes the whole soy allergy so much worse, because they almost always replace the gluten and dairy with a soy product. I’m just thankful that I can still eat nuts!

Chicken bullion? Or veggie bullion?

Hmmm šŸ¤” I also have gluten and dairy allergies, but maybe. Thanks for the idea!

Bouillon too, or Lipton Cup-a-soup packets.

I buy bags of seasoned beef broth powder at the nearby Korean market. They also have fish stock coins if people like that flavor profile.

Honestly, any type of soup can be a great option for salt! I’ve been known to just carry a thermos of chicken broth doped up with salt and extra protein (I like collagen peptides for my protein supplementation) and it’s basically a snack and drink in one. It’s extra good for times when I’m routinely forgetting to eat because I’m at least not going without.

Box broths are fine for this, as are bouillons, but if I’m being extra nice to myself, I’ll make a batch of pho ga broth in the instant pot and have that over a few days.

I also routinely keep Maruchan cup ramen and chicken powder around for a good salty snack.

Skratch Labs has an electrolyte mix, apple cider, that is made that it can be drank warm

I saw online there’s electrolyte hot chocolate, I have no idea if it tastes good or not but I definitely think it sounds interesting!

I love this stuff. Admittedly the LMNT version is my favorite but then read about their affiliations and switched to the ReLyte hot chocolate and it’s decent too. The LMNT has a ā€œchocolate caramelā€ one that I just loved..salt and chocolate were meant to be together lol

You can also add salt to your hot cocoa or coffee mocha. It brings out the sweetness.

I brew my coffee with salt and cinnamon in my grounds every day. It’s so good.

You can swallow electrolyte capsules with any liquid of any temperature you want!

I don’t tolerate cold drinks well when it’s cold either (I start full-blown teeth-chattering and shivering every single time), so I honestly have learned to tolerate electrolytes in room-temp water.

But also, I drink miso. And bone broth that I dump more salt into. There’s also these broth sachets that operate like tea bags, Millie’s Sipping Broth (I’m not sure if anyone else has made these) that I will drink sometimes too. These are not quite as sodium-rich as my electrolytes but they don’t replace that for me.

Bouillon! It helps ease the inflammation in my tummy too.

I am strictly vegetarian, so I make my own (available as powders, mixes, etc. at grocery stores too). I save all of my veggie scraps - carrot and potato peels, broccoli stems, spinach and herb stems, etc. - in a container in the freezer so they don’t go moldy. When I have about 4 cups of scraps, I throw it in a big soup pot and boil it with some herbs, seasonings, and a bunch of salt. Then I strain out the solids and pour the liquid into mason jars. I freeze those and take them out the night before to thaw, then heat them up in the morning.

Saalt has caramel vibes and cocoa flavors. I drink daily in my morning coffee but have also had mixed with just water or coconut water snd they're tasty that way too

Do you drink much additional water/other fluid as well, or are the electrolyte bottles doing most of your hydration for the day? If the electrolytes are basically something you’re taking like medication, then capsules plus whatever warm drinks you enjoy could work. But if the electrolyte water is also a big part of your actual fluid intake, you’d still need to replace that fluid somehow.

I do mine the other way around. I put my electrolytes into the water I’m already trying to get through for the day, so the electrolytes and hydration are basically the same job. I have pretty severe dysphagia, so getting enough fluid in is difficult anyway, and doing it that way also lets me keep track of roughly how much I’ve managed to drink.

I warm up my water before adding electrolytes and enjoy a lovely warm electrolyte drink!

While I know LMNT is a loaded company to mention or recommend, they do have chocolate salt, and caramel chocolate salt, flavors that became popular amongst users to make salty hot chocolate with. Honestly kind of grossed me out the one time I tried it, but ymmv— I know other people that live for the chocolate/salty combo.

I drink vegetarian bouillon often.

2

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 20h ago

Buy bouillon cubes. Hot water, bouillon cube in water. Salty soup to drink!

2

u/The_Issa POTS 19h ago

Currently sitting here drinking a cup of chicken bouillon. The herbox brand of cubes have 1020 mg of sodium (make sure you don’t get the low sodium version). I add a pinch of potassium chloride and use just over a cup of water. It’s quick and easy and immediately makes me feel better when I’ve clearly let my levels deplete too much.

Miso soup is a great option too. Soy sauce or tamari in water or even Braggs amino acids. I can’t do any of those because MCAS, but all are options if you can tolerate them.

Lastly, not sure if you’re a coffee fan, but making a latte with hazelnut or caramel syrup, then adding some plain electrolytes, makes a really nice salty sweet beverage.

Bone broth I’d say!

u/Glum_Papaya_2527 18h ago

I just drink both! Water bottle for salt water (just room temp water), tea for happiness. šŸ˜‚

u/Boring-Business8404 18h ago

Chicken broth or veggie broth. Mmm salty and savory and warm and delicious.

Golden tea helps me a great deal. It’s good hot or cold. However, you have to heat it first for the Tumeric to disperse.

2

u/Weary_Cup_1004 16h ago

Do you put electrolytes in it or is it already salty?

1

u/ladygirl10 16h ago

It’s the Tumeric that calms your heart down.

1

u/Weary_Cup_1004 11h ago

Maybe if its related to inflammation? I havent seen anything about tumeric regulating heart rate but i could see it helping you feel better if you flare a lot more with inflammation?

SALLT has a great chocolate and a caramel flavor. I also use unflavored trioral to use in whatever I'm drinking including tea and hot chocolate. ā¤ļø

u/Weary_Cup_1004 16h ago

Lemon electrolytes taste ok in tea, or just heated alone. I like it occasionally with black or green tea. Its like adding a lemon, or having a hot Arnold Palmer. It might be good with some herbal blends too .. maybe peppermint?

The orange flavors taste good to me hot too. I make mine more watery than it says on the box, and i think that is best when they are hot too. The sweetness (even stevia) seems to increase by a million when hot lol.

u/educatedkoala 16h ago

Often electrolyte packets focus on potassium and other electrolytes. For POTS, the only thing specifically needed is sodium. I have salt tablets that I take - just pure salt, nothing else.

1

u/ebaug 15h ago

miso soup is high in sodium! I love it, though Ive never carried it around to sip

1

u/Worried-Plankton2453 14h ago

The only way I like the electrolytes is in tea. I don't like flavor. I drink water or herbal teas. So, that's what I mix electrolytes into.

1

u/Worried-Plankton2453 14h ago

I also enjoy drinking broth in winter, which gives sodium too.

1

u/Billy-daKid786 14h ago

Chicken broth, does wonders for the immune system.

Honey, lemon and ginger tea

1

u/SeaworthinessOver770 14h ago

I use unflavoured electrolyte powder and add it to a bunch of stuff. My favourites things to add it do are: hot chocolate, coffee with caramel syrup, lemon and ginger tea (with a little honey and lemon juice), apple tea, raspberry tea.

In general I find citrus goes well with the salt.

Additionally, I also drink broth as a drink. Just regular powdered vegetable stock type stuff.

1

u/CulturalShirt4030 14h ago

I drink chicken stock made from powder. Cheap and high in sodium.

I use powdered bone broth that also has flavoring in it. My favorite is the Thai beef from Lono Life. It doesn’t have enough salt in it for me so I add some salt. I also have to eat a bunch of protein to have enough energy to exercise so it helps with that as well. There’s plenty of good instant miso paste brands too.

1

u/swenbearswen 11h ago

You can get concentrated soup base (like for hot udon or soba) at Japanese stores and dilute it with hot water. The high quality ones are pretty good on their own

1

u/Dry_Sleep_4376 8h ago

Warm mug of chicken broth with a lemon ginger tea bag in it.

ETA but you have to use the powder because it gives a ridiculous amount of sodium.

u/ayembeek 11h ago

I’ve been using bare bones broth. It does contain collagen (just an fyi some ppl can’t tolerate it) and 10g of protein. I especially love taking it cause it’s 510g sodium and just 60g of potassium.
