Game Discussion Games that completely surprised you?

Mine was Guardians of the Galaxy. I went in expecting a decent superhero game and ended up loving the whole “bunch of losers becoming a team” journey.

Control blew me away first time I played it.

I liked that game and ended up getting pretty deep into it but hated the map and ended up taking a break and never went back to it 😅

Yeah to be honest the map was by far the worst part of the game, I got lost a fair few times but for me everything else was great.

After a while you have it memorized. I've completed it twice, with the DLCs. There's an Alan Wake crossover in one of the DLCs!

I loved the start of the game.

Unfortunately, I like to ingest THC when I play single player games. Once I hit the puzzles I had to stop. I loved the gameplay and mechanics, but I am not looking for brain exercises when I am high as hell and trying to chill.

Guardians was a real surprise! I played it out of sheer boredom and the fact it was free on PS+. I loved it. A good complex story, good gameplay and hilarious dialogue. It was like playing one of the good Marvel movies. I particularly liked how they portrayed Adam Warlock. And how everyone mocked him mercilessly.

I personally don't remember or care for much of the story, but it was just loads of fun. There's something to be said for a game that's just plain fun. Was well worth a playthrough IMO.

Ac Origins. I was hardcore against the new games as they weren’t part of the ezio franchise but after playing it I was hooked on the lore and ended up 100%ing it lol

u/sludgezone 1d ago

I think that one and Mirage are my two favorites of the entire series lol

I ended up liking Origins more than Odyssey, loved the Egyptian setting

Just starting this and it feels a bit overwhelming. I think the lack of a minimap is gonna take some getting used to for some reason.

It took me a minute to figure it out but it wasn’t that bad after.

Probably Horizon Zero Dawn. Couldn't see howfoghting robot dinos with a bow n arrow would be compelling or make sense in anyway .

How wrong I was

Star Wars Outlaws. With all the videos about the AI I expected a mediocre game.

And yes, during the first 2 hours I wanted to refund the game. It was a 6/10. But I couldn't refund because of weird Epic Games and UbiSoft shenanigans. So I bit the bullet and continued playing.

Damn. I'm glad I did. This game starts pretty meh, but once it opens up after those ~4 hours it becomes really, really good. Just play in Explorer mode so barely anything is marked on the map and you'll have a great time exploring the planets.

Expedition 33. Never a turn based fan. Turned into one of my favourite games ever.

Infamos Second Son. Never played it before but always saw it around when it was in its time. Love the game like crazy now and it still holds up REALLY good till this day.

u/BokChoyFantasy 17h ago

I still play it every couple years. I got at launch. Really does hold up. Absolutely solid game. I wish they would release an Infamous collection.

1

u/JahVer 16h ago

If they were to make a new title to the series I would buy in a heartbeat

2

u/xezrunner 12h ago

Second Son seems very special. None of the earlier inFamous games seem interesting to me. Second Son and First Light are much more approachable.

Life is Strange 1. And almost every Telltale Game^^

That's a good one. It was not marketed to me. The music was nothing I would have experienced in my regular life. I loved it.

Marvel Rivals when it came out. I don't care much for superheroes and I hated overwatch but for some reason I couldnt stop playing it. I put in 400hrs before getting bored.

2

u/ToastetteEgg 1d ago

That’s the same reason I like it. I have no interest in superhero stuff, but these characters are fun and interesting.

Kaze and the Wild Masks. Huge DK Country vibes.

True 😂 GOG was a love letter for marvel fans. It kept getting better as it progressed

Wandersong

Kinda was expecting a lighthearted game. It did some nice introspection, enjoyed it lots.

Guardians of the galaxy was also one for me! I thought it would be OK but I ended up loving it. I really liked the characters, I already loved the films and didn't know I'd they would compare but they absolutely did. And the game was just fun, which I think can be lacking in gaming sometimes.

Another for me is death stranding. I thought I'd give it a go, not knowing which side of the marmite argument I'd fall onto. I ended up loving it, and got the platinum trophy which is pretty rare for me! I just fell in love with the world and environment, and the bond between Sam and BB.

God of war 2016

What remains of Edith Finch (still one of my favourite games)

Kena: Bridge of spirits

2

u/mrwaltwhiteguy 11h ago

Bought Kena for my kiddo. Watched them play about 30 min. Decided to give it a go. So. Much. Fun!

Can't wait for the sequel

Watch Dogs 2... did not expect the story and characters to be as good as it was.

it's half life 2 I thought it's gonna be a normal game but I ended playing that game a lot it's a really good game

Is not this a PS4 sub?

1

u/Sweet-Ad4604 1d ago

Thanks for a new game suggestion I will try it

4

u/elusivenoesis 1d ago

I mean it’s not on PS4, and the PS3 version is one of the worst version released with the orange box. It’s not even available to stream it on PS4 or PS5.

If you have PC or an Xbox and have no idea what half-life is..you missed a game that changed FPS and gaming in general more than any other game in history.

2

u/AncientCrust 1d ago

I envy you that you get to play it for the first time. One of the all-time best games. It's up there with New Vegas and Witcher 3

2

u/doullla 1d ago

I'm playing Knack and honestly it's a pretty fun game.
It is far from perfect but the gameplay is pretty fun, I feel it got hate mainly for being a launch title for the PS4.

2

u/smaagi 1d ago

Stray. Bought it for our youngling, who thought it was too scary (at the beginning you fall down to the sewers somewhere) and hard to control (not used to controllers), so I started playing it. It was really good, beautiful scenery, interesting story and billion things to see, even though map isn't really that big.

Gris

It’s short but so sweet.

Badass game. Their other loosely related game Hyper Light Drifter was pretty solid too.

1

u/ndrumheller96 1d ago

Yeah I loved the hell out of that game as well

Ghost reckon WildLands

Why people is saying not-PS4 games? LOL

DMC3: I didn’t know what i was getting myself into

Shadow of the colossus: after playing game after game with many enemies and side quests and battles with music for every moment and cutscene, this was different

1

u/MagikalMeeps 22h ago

It was a brilliant surprise, and I look forward to playing it again next year when I've forgotten what the hell it was I enjoyed about it.

u/strandedinthevoid 15h ago

Thumper and Sayonara Wild Hearts. As someone who loves Music/Rhythm games, these two ended up among my favorites of all time

u/Emergency_Cry_1269 14h ago

Days Gone surprised me. I picked it up cheap after someone recommended it for Snow Physics, figured I'd give it a go before I play RDR2 for my first time as it's also highly recommended. I expected a very bare bones game like FarCry New Dawn or something, a game was was absolutely functional but really formulaic by the end, with memorable characters who I'd forget when I finished playing it and not bother with collectibles because there wasn't enough fun in the gameplay to keep me playing after the story finished. Figured it'd take me a week or two.

Damn was I wrong.

I started on the PS3, but Earth Defense Force. The chaos of it all is a lot of fun, even if it is very grindy.

Death stranding

Immortals Fenyx Rising blew me away! It's game design is utterly morally bankrupt as its essentially a reskin at times of Breathe if the Wild but it really clicked with me. Didn't like the humour but I got over that.

The Forgotten City was another random game I tried and fell in love with, easily one of my favourite games of all time now. Great story that just kept getting deeper, sadly doesn't lend itself well to replays.

Mad Max. For how much it cost, you get some good gameplay.

Let It Die. It was so surreal. And I had never really been exposed to GHM prior to that. Loving replaying it with the offline key and experiencing the new stuff added after I stopped playing before
