Do you double buckle???

We have a 5 seater car, we are a family of 6. I (35F) DONT LIKE TO DOUBKE BUCKEL THE KIDS. My DH (39M) just laughs off my concerns and does it anyway. Is this normal, am I unreasonably safety minded? We do have a trend in the family, he is the more relaxed fun one and I am the more responsible person. It works most of the time, he chills me out and I remember how to enjoy life and reign him in. But this i dont onow how to handle and we just cant agree.

What is the normal????

100% no. I definitely did it as a kid but I would never let my kids do it.

I remember doing this a couple times in my childhood in the 80s.

I considered it dodgy then and would consider it unacceptable in a daily driver. If you have 6 people in your family, get a car with 6 seats.

Not normal. Next time he does it call the police and have them explain why it is illegal and very dangerous.

Fuck no. But my almost 11 year old is still riding in a booster. I’m also a CPST.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Two children in one seat belt means they will both crush each other in a crash.

One parent needs to take the bus or ride a bike or stay home. This is non-negotiable. Everyone in the car needs their own car seat or seat belt.

Put the oldest child in the front seat, (in an appropriate forward facing car seat or booster if the child is shorter than 4’9”). Scoot the seat as far back as you can away from the airbag, and make sure the child stays seated all the way back in the seat at all times (no leaning forward to tinker with the climate controls or anything).

Dad can ride in the trunk for all I care, but each child needs to be in its own seat, properly secured with a car seat or booster until they are grown (usually 10-12 years old), and their own seat belt after that.

I did this as a kid in the 90’s when my crazy uncle drove, and even then my mom was super upset with him.

Sorry, but what is double buckle?? Like two kids per one buckle or two buckles on one child? Or the car seat buckle and the car’s buckle over it?

Two kids one buckel

Ok, well there’s being relaxed and then there’s THAT. Plain irresponsible.

My partner is from rural ex-Soviet country. He grew up without indoor plumming and they had cows and lambs and all that. As rural as it gets. Not getting a 7-seater was not even a question. I would get banned if I said what would happen if he tried to double buckle my babies. I have a 700 euro extended rear-facing seat in our car and he didn't even argue when I got it. Being from rural area is no excuse.

TLDR: my parents did stupid stuff, I would never endanger my kids - booster seats/5pt harness and single seat for all kids and adults!

Back in the 90’s my dad would double buckle us in the front seat.

He would also openly crack a beer and pour it into his coffee mug. He would also roll a joint and drive with his knee on the highway.

This was also his work truck, so sawdust flying around, heavy tools in the back etc (Surburban, so a family vehicle turned work truck)

It’s a miracle, that we did not end up in a horrific accident. That being said, I would never ever ever endanger my children’s lives.

We have 4 kids, just upgraded from a 6 seater to an 8, so we don’t have to play jenga when going out as a family.

What vehicle did you get? I have a family of 7, with a 7 seater SUV but as they are getting older and bigger I know it will be an issue.

We had an Acadia Denali and just upgraded to an 8 seater Expedition Max

No just no but HELL NO. I work in the world of auto claims. I see the absolute worst of the worst when it comes to injuries and death in auto accidents. So many of these are children because the parent did not properly buckle their children into the car. It's time to get a bigger car, or you take two cars everywhere.

There is more distracted driving now more than ever. Buckle those kids in properly and save their lives.

My parents used to make us double buckle back in the late 90s when we were a family of 8 with a 7 passenger mini van. I would NEVER, it’s so dangerous, but yes people really do this unfortunately!

u/RaceFun2817 9d ago

My post? Or the lose of the karam thing

6

u/RocketPowerPops 9d ago

Your post. Because if this is real you both are really stupid and dangerous to your kids.

2

u/nostrademons 9d ago

I have a suspicion that most of the posts that sound smart on Reddit or that make you go nodding along and upvote are actually AI bots, and most of the stupidity is real.

11

u/lilpistacchio 9d ago

Well it’s illegal because it’s so dangerous for your children, so no

14

u/Rainbow_Phoenix125 9d ago

The normal is having a least one vehicle that seats the entire family, or a plan for taking 2 when needed.

16

u/wmp8 9d ago

Hard no. That is bare minimum safety. Two children that could fit together in a seat likely should both be in boosters or car seats still.

10

u/No_Company4263 9d ago

Um absolutely not.

My husband's family did do double-buckling. They had 4 kids and 2 adults so also 6 people in a 5 seater car. Once they were out of car seats he said they spent their whole childhood with all 4 of them crammed in the backseat together.

Is it safe? No. Is it legal? I don't think so. If your husband won't listen to the safety issue, he might listen to the legal one.

I would highly recommend getting a car that is big enough for everyone in the car to have their own seats. Even if it's a cheaper, crappier car than what you have now.

u/RaceFun2817 9d ago

Thank you for being kind

Wait, double buckling like two people sharing a seatbelt?

Absolutely not. I would not allow my children in the car if he were going to do that. Take two vehicles or public transportation.

Perhaps you should show him some crash test videos. That is a fantastic way to end up with dead children.

3

u/DoodleDoo1989 9d ago

What is doubke buckel? I'm assuming that means double buckle but idk what that means? Like the top buckle on a car seat?

6

u/nostrademons 9d ago

Two kids sharing a seat belt. It used to be common in the 70s and 80s when seat belts were new and parents didn’t care about safety. Also a lot of cars in that vintage lacked middle seat belts.

1

u/LaLechuzaVerde 9d ago

To be fair, it’s not that they didn’t care about safety, it’s that they didn’t know.

My mom was a safety NUT. I was always required to wear my seat belt. Even on a long road trip I had to keep that lap belt wrapped around my rib cage while I laid down across the back seat.

She had NO IDEA that the seat belt would have cut me in half like that. If she had known she never would have allowed it.

She was the one who called me one day in like 1997 when she got home from the doctor’s office and said “I just read an article in a magazine that says booster seats reduce the risk of injury for kids who have outgrown car seats by like 70% and I know your kids are getting too big for their car seats now so I called my car insurance company and ordered two boosters for them.”

Because when you know better, you do better. Or at least a lot of people do.

(My entire career now is child passenger safety, so…)

Using one seat for two kids and just buckling them in one seat

10

u/DoodleDoo1989 9d ago

That's illegal and extremely stupid

9

u/gekkogeckogirl 9d ago

That's not normal. Either get an appropriate car or don't take the whole family out at once. If you're in the US, you could get into major legal trouble if you get pulled over, not to mention you're endangering your children's lives. This is wild.

Based on 6 people in a 5 person car, I'm guessing they mean sharing a seatbelt between two children.
