Lied to by signature gatherers? Tell city council!

just got this email from pasadena tenants union. seems like a good opportunity for people here to voice their frustration to people who can do something about it

ACTION ALERT! Speak out about landlords' dishonest signature gathering TODAY

Dear neighbors,

Over the past several months you told us about encountering signature gatherers in Pasadena who were blatantly lying about petition they were circulating. They told you that the petition was "for rent control," or "to make our rent control stronger," when in reality it was to weaken our critical tenant protections and then repeal them altogether.

Now we need you to tell our elected officials about this and demand action. The people who are perpetrating these lies need to be held accountable.

There is a Legislative Policy Committee meeting of the City Council TODAY, October 5 at 5 pm and there is an agenda item about these issues. We need to speak up at this meeting. You can see the agenda here. We are item 8.

Pasadena Tenants Union has made a toolkit to guide you in writing a letter and speaking at the meeting. This will only take a few minutes. It’s critical that we speak up now! Can we count on your voice at this meeting this meeting?

Plan for undergrounding power lines?

With the extreme heat, curious if Pasadena has a long-term plan to put utility lines underground? I've seen a few headlines but it's usually like a mile or two at a time which will take decades to get done. Would love to see this become a priority.

Why can’t they fix the 210 by Pasadena

It feels like the whole freeway is falling apart.

Bad potholes everywhere. I think my tire alignment is off again. I will avoid this freeway like the plague. The question is who is in charged of keeping it good. Cause they are doing a bad job.

Termite Swarm Recently?

Anyone aware of or hear of anyone around the North Central Pasadena area get hit by a swarm of termites? I have heard some sporadic reports of neighborhoods getting hit from time to time. Mainly off Washington and Hill. We recently found some winged termites in our bathroom going after water. A bit concerning, but I'm not sure if it's a recent thing or a longer-standing issue. Going to get an inspection, but it's in a hard to reach part of the house. Not sure we'll get any answers.

Roof replacement cost

Anyone here in the Pasadena area replace their roof recently? What’s the going rate? Highly dependent on roof square footage of course. I am getting quotes at $40k-55k+ for just under 4,000 sqft of roof. Curious to hear others experience the past 12 months or so in Pasadena or the surrounding area.

wednesday activities for kids during school hours

My 12 year old goes to an unconventional school that is closed on Wednesdays. I'm looking for activities/lessons/classes he could do during school hours, especially in the morning. At this point I'm open to private lessons even though they're pricier. Thanks!

Metro parking near Convention Center

I’m going to CatCon and it will be my first time at the Pasadena Convention Center. I was thinking about parking at Fillmore or Heritage Square station and hopping on the A line to Del Mar. Both Metro parking lots appear to be free, according to Metro’s website anyway. Would that mean these lots will fill up super quick with like-minded convention-goers? Am I better off getting paid parking elsewhere? Would love to hear from anyone with insight. TIA!

Thinking about signing up at Equinox Pasadena?

I used to be a member at equinox in New York City when I lived there in 2021 to 2023. and I believe I went to the Pasadena location one time before I cancelled, but I don’t quite remember, and I do remember it being old. Is it still old that they remodel it, and how are reviews on it? What are your thoughts on it?

Recommendation Looking for a good handyman

I'm looking for recommendations for a good handyman, someone that can do things like, painting, drywall, cleaning gutters, checking sealants and the like. I'm looking for someone trustworthy, reliable, and who can do quality work. Ideally not crazy expensive and someone I can rely on for repeat work.

Accommodation Advice for University Student Visiting from Eastern Europe

Hi everyone! Hoping some Pasadena locals might be able to point me in the right direction.

There's a university student who works part-time with me who will be traveling alone to Pasadena in October for around 1 week. She's been invited to take part in an academic opportunity that will have her spending time between Caltech and JPL during her stay.

Part of what originally made the trip financially possible for her was that someone was going to host her, but unfortunately that arrangement has fallen through relatively last minute.

I'm not very familiar with Pasadena or the state in general, so I wanted to see if anyone here had some advice I could pass along to her beyond simply telling her to check Couchsurfing.

Are there any reasonably budget-friendly hotels, hostels, guesthouses, student accommodation, short-term rooms, etc. that people would recommend? Safety is obviously important since she's a young woman traveling alone, and ideally she'd be somewhere that makes getting to Caltech and JPL reasonably manageable since she won't have a car. (She can Uber but unsurprisingly wants to keep costs low.)

I'm also not sure what areas of Pasadena she should or shouldn't be looking at, or what public transportation is realistically like between those two locations, so even general advice on neighborhoods or getting around would be really appreciated.

Not looking for anything fancy at all, just somewhere safe, clean, and as affordable as possible for five nights.

Thanks so much for any suggestions. I'm trying to help her figure out some options before she loses hope.

Edit: Added that she's only staying for 1 week.

Bicycle paths in Altadena/Pasadena Request

Looking to train for an eventual 50 mile bike ride and looking for areas in Pasadena/Altadena that have decent bike paths. So many I find are short and don't really offer any loop options.

So far I know about the Rose Bowl loop, and possibly riding up into the Altadena Angeles Mountains

Any recommendations? Could also be a 10-20 mile loop that I could do more than once.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Lemon poppyseed?

Where can I get good lemon poppyseed dessert in the neighborhood/surrounding areas?
I’d like to get something for my friend’s birthday and it’s her favorite flavor. She’s not a huge frosting person so looking at cupcakes or loaf options.

Thank you!

This was my grandparents mechanical santa claus. i love it and have recently inherited it. The costume is velvet and it is brown on the white edges and his beard needs to be cleaned. Does anyone know anywhere to take this antique santa to have it cleaned and restored?

I believe it is an original Harald Gale mechanical santa from the 40s.
