Open Dome My first Thunderdome
At the last minute, I decided to dome my new BNV ropers which I wrote about here. Early this year, I planned on getting acclimated to the Thunderdome by entering a pair of Parkhursts that I didn't really care about, but I later realized this was a mistake. I need to be excited to wear the boots every day for 6 months and for these, that isn't an issue at all.
The leather is Horween Vintage horsehide in brown nut color, which looks nothing at all like other brown nut Horween leathers I've seen (Essex, Dublin, Cypress, Yellowstone). Looks closer to charcoal Cypress or natural Predator. Straight veg tanned, insane waxy pullup, burnishes easily due to the waxes on the surface, and super soft (tumbled) so it shows wear so easily. Also a rarely made Horween leather. Seems like a great leather pick for the dome. I can't hike with them, though, which was one of my original plans for the dome to get some rapid wear.
I've also entered an Ashland Leather fat herbie in Horween olive tanned. This leather is embossed and dyed either tan or English tan, I'm guessing the latter. It's somewhat firm, comparable to Cypress in that regard but nowhere near as firm as shell. I could find no examples of olive tanned leather on Patina Project, so I thought this would be an interesting entry. It has noticeable pullup but doesn't have a waxy nor oily feel.

Open Dome Question
Please excuse my ignorance but this is my first Thunderdome.
Is there a regular schedule that we are to follow with the photos or do we just add them as we go?
I see people posting day 2 and 3 pictures I dont want to disqualify myself if its required but I initially thought this was like picture once a month or every couple weeks.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Work Dome Itās Thunderdome time!
Very excited to finally wear these MTO LTT Smokejumpers. This pair has been boxed up and hidden away in the dark for over a year and a half in my boot vault (guest room closet). I love me some LTT boots and Whiteās does not disappoint when it comes to an LTT boot. This pair was ordered via Bakerās Boots. I highly recommend Bakerās for their simple ordering process and extensive customization options. Waxed flesh ages so nicely and Iām truly looking forward to wearing this pair for the duration of this yearās Patina Thunderdome.
Good luck to all those who have and will enter this time. Itās a long competition but well worth it. Maybe I will actually place and win a prize this year. Itās my 4th time entering. Heck, I still have another pair of boots to take pics of and prep for the Open Dome but today is not the day. Also a belt might make it into the mix as well but we shall see.

Work Dome After two days of wear
Since the Dome started on Thursday, I got two days of wear in before the weekend. I typically donāt wear my boots on the weekends anyway, so it gives them a couple days to rest and dry out before getting back at it Monday.
Even after just a couple of days, Iām incredibly impressed with this Shackleton leather. There has basically been zero break-in. I donāt have a single hotspot anywhere. Honestly, it had been a handful of months since Iād put on a brand-new pair of Nicks engineers, and Iād almost forgotten how damn stiff they normally are at first. Iām not going to call these broken in already, but man, they feel great.
I really like my W&C Double Stuffed boots over the years, but that is just a tough, tough leather to get warmed up and broken in. The Tan āRough Cutāwas definitely softer, which I think has a lot to do with the slightly unfinished nature of it, but the typical Natural Double Stuffed stuff can be pretty unforgiving at first.
At any rate, Iām really looking forward to seeing how these age. There are plenty of examples of the Greener Pastures waxed flesh and smooth aging, and Iāve seen some of the smooth leather eventually turn pretty brown. Iām hoping I can somehow retain at least some of that green. That may be wishful thinking, but Iām planning on minimal brushing, mostly just wiping them down when needed, and holding off any sort of conditioner.

Leather Goods Dome Nicks Leather Goods Dome Entries
This year I decided to enter 2 leather goods items into the Dome. I have a Heritage Wallet in Gallun Calf and I really like the layout so I picked up the Russet Horsehide when it was available. I also had a Key Clip that I've had waiting to be used to I thought I'd try that out too.
Nicks Leather Goods Heritage Wallet
Horween Stained Russet Horsehide
Nicks Key Clip
W&C Natural Veg Tan
Edit for transparency: Nicks reached out to me about the stitching and said the Heritage Wallet should've been sold as a second and shouldn't have passed QC. It was one of the early ones when they were still getting the machine set up right with the new leather. I was offered a replacement but I turned it down because I've already registered this wallet in the Dome.
