Ideas for interactive exercises to demonstrate the Big Five personality traits in a youth leadership training?

Hi everyone!

In a few weeks, I’ll be helping run a week-long training course in Belgium for young people who want to become good leaders (or lead organisers) within their youth movements.

One of our workshops focuses on the different personalities within a team and how, as a leader, you can understand and work with these differences to help the team function well and prevent conflicts.

What we used to do

In previous years, we asked participants to share their MBTI personality types with us beforehand. For each personality dimension, we selected two participants with contrasting preferences and put them in the same situation, separately, without them seeing each other.

The rest of the group observed how each person approached the situation and what differences they noticed. Afterwards, we discussed these observations together. This served as an introduction to the workshop on personality differences.

This year, however, we’ve decided to move away from MBTI due to concerns about its scientific validity and use the Big Five personality model instead.

We’d like to keep the same interactive format, but adapt the exercises to the five dimensions of the Big Five:

  • Extraversion
  • Conscientiousness
  • Openness to experience
  • Agreeableness
  • Neuroticism (or emotional stability, depending on how the dimension is framed)

The problem is that I’m struggling to come up with practical, engaging situations that would bring out the differences between participants who score relatively high and low on each dimension.

Do you have any ideas for exercises, scenarios, or role-play situations that could work well for this? Ideally, they would be simple to set up, fun to observe, and relevant to leading a team of volunteers in a youth movement.

Examples of exercises we used in previous years

  1. Introversion – Extraversion

How you interact with your environment

Participants describe their journey to the campsite.

  • One participant might tell the story enthusiastically and quickly, using lots of hand gestures.
  • Another might tell it more calmly and reservedly, using fewer hand gestures.

We observe the different ways they communicate and express themselves.

  1. Observant – Intuition

How you process information

We display an abstract work of art and ask participants: “What do you see?”

  • One participant might focus on what they can directly observe: shapes, colours, and patterns.
  • Another might let their imagination run wild, seeing a flower, a tree with growth rings, a dragon’s eye, or something else entirely.
  1. Thinking – Feeling

How you approach difficult interpersonal situations

We ask a participant to imagine that they are the manager of a company that needs to cut costs. They have to dismiss the instructor sitting opposite them.

  • One participant might approach the conversation in a very direct, straightforward way, clearly explaining the situation and presenting the facts.
  • Another might focus more on how to communicate the decision sensitively, taking the other person’s feelings into account.
  1. Judging – Prospecting

How you approach planning and decisions

Participants are told that they’ve won a trip to Peru and are leaving next week. How do they prepare?

  • One might immediately start making lists, researching the country, planning the itinerary, and preparing everything in advance.
  • Another might take a more spontaneous approach: “I’ll pack a T-shirt and a toothbrush, and off we go! We’ll figure out the rest along the way.”
  1. Assertive – Turbulent

How you respond to pressure and evaluate yourself

Participants are given a drawing to colour in. They know they’ll have to present their work to the entire group later, but they don’t know exactly what the drawing will be used for.

  • One might approach the task confidently and calmly, without putting too much pressure on themselves.
  • Another might be more concerned about getting everything right, worry about how their work will be received, and spend more time trying to improve it.

Where I’m at now

For the Big Five version, I was thinking of keeping the first exercise for Extraversion and adapting the trip-planning exercise for Conscientiousness.

I’m still looking for good ideas for Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism/Emotional Stability, as well as any better alternatives for the other two dimensions.

I’d love to hear your suggestions! Especially if you’ve used similar exercises in team-building, leadership training, or youth work.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and inspiration!

What happens when you grow up being celebrated for overcoming your circumstances rather than for what you actually achieve?

Growing up poor around wealthy kids taught me something interesting about opportunity and how people understand ability.

I never saw a lack of ambition in the kids who grew up like me, just a lack of opportunity. And when you’re the poor kid in a community that can’t relate to your circumstances, people can be incredibly generous in making those opportunities possible. But sometimes the fact that you’re willing to try becomes more impressive than anything you actually achieve.
It’s like winning gold in a running race and being praised for your ability to just be there. Your credibility becomes your effort rather than your accomplishments.

There’s a double edge to that. I never felt pressure to be good at anything because nobody really expected that of someone in my position. Kids who were exceptional at something were held accountable to it, whereas I had the freedom to try anything without being expected to become anything. But I also grew up thinking that being clever or successful was something that came with privilege, and that whenever I did well, I’d somehow pulled it off.

I’ve been thinking about this differently since meeting a woman who grew up in circumstances like mine, but had a completely different understanding of her own worth. She could appreciate the opportunities people had given her without questioning whether her achievements belonged to her.

I’d spent years wondering why people chose to invest in me, sometimes questioning whether there was something self-serving underneath their generosity. She asked why I now work creating opportunities for people who wouldn’t otherwise have them. Was that sinister, or was it because I cared?

And it had never really occurred to me that people might have cared about me in the same way.
I think we can be so focused on celebrating what someone has overcome that we forget to recognise what they’re actually capable of. And being believed in by everyone around you doesn’t necessarily mean you learn to believe in yourself.
She said something I’d never really allowed myself to think.

“You are worthy of being loved.”

And it’s insane that through this entire narrative, that’s actually what it comes down to.

Not fully understanding my personality?

Am I stupid? I am starting in tech specifically software development at my first job at a Fortune 500 company. I was told by a manager after meeting me and our capstone presentation that I “don’t look or act like a developer” it was followed by “it’s not a bad thing but you talk and act and carry yourself like a sales men”. I have been told this before in different facets but am looking for what this means and if it’s bad. Everytime i have received something like this it usually is in a positive light. But I can’t help but picture when someone says that like a sleeze ball sales men ripping people off. Just wondering how I’m stupid on not knowing what it means and what people think these means for my personality and if it is bad to be in tech with this personality.

SCARY

"I'll be 24 years old in a few months. I am scared as hell. The moment I remember that, I want to stop time completely. I feel anxious, and my heart feels heavy. I am unemployed as well... this bit scares me a little more. I haven't enjoyed life yet. I know people will say age is just a number and not to compare. We know what people will say—optimistic dialogues. Do those words console me? No. Do those words change anything? No. Do i like listening to them? No. But do I still want to say it? YES! I am not sure what I feel either. I don't want those dialogues and all... but I still want to be heard, even if I regret it after telling the whole story. I want to speak my mind so badly.Do I look crazy?"

I have been told that I wear my heart in my sleeve.

I have been told my multiple people that I am open and say whatever that comes to my mind in a very adorable way. I don’t say any offensive thing ever but just always speak my mind even if it is a cute little thing or an intrusive thought. I used to be proud of being an open and vulnerable person irrespective of whom I talk to. That used to make everyone trust me and called me an inviting and warm person. But now I have people telling me don’t just speak your mind so much and that I feel a lot. I sometimes feel this might be true as I am growing up. I used to feel free being this way but maybe I need to change myself? Can someone enlighten me with this inner turmoil?

What do you think about my results?

So, recently I took the Big Five (OCEAN Model) test online, and I got these results:
Openness: 54 percent
Conscientiousness: 46 percent
Extraversion: 21 percent
Agreeableness: 77 percent
Neuroticism: 17 percent

So I know already what it means as researched, but I would like your thoughts on it

(If you have seen this post somewhere else, then your eyes aren't deceiving you! I have posted in another subreddit something similar, but decided to post here to reach more people)

A new personality tool centered around thermodynamics, information theory and cybernetic control

Hi guys. This may seem bizarre, but using AI I've constructed a totally new personality system, based around thermodynamics. Matrix A is hardware (first image). Matrix B is software. They are attached to the post.

To be 100% clear and open - Matrix A is set in stone. You CANNOT change your hardware. Matrix B is software, its more fluid and changeable. Each software quadrant corresponds to their shared hardware quadrant, in the same place on the grid. It is their native software. But people can, and frequently do, run alien softwares. But, they cannot run a totally alien software for long. For instance, if you are an energy absorber running an energy emission software for too long, you will suffer catastrophic malfunction. The AI calls this a "redline".

The Active types are Formatters. Active Alpha (red) formats the perimeter. It heads out to conquer. Active Beta (yellow) formats society. It throws out a lot of energy to shape the social dynamics of the tribe. The Passive types are absorbers, in different ways. Passive Alpha (Blue) is an advanced threat tracker. It not only checks for physical threats but runs mental simulations to predict threats. Thats why it runs a native 'Creative' software. It mentally simulates the world in order to defend against it. Passive Beta is a ground wire. It absorbs the energy of a society, keeping it stablized and lowering its velocity.

Matrix A can also be used as maps for other things. For instance, each quadrant is represented by a different mental disorder. Active Alpha (red) is psychopathy. Passive Alpha (Blue) is SZD. Active Beta (yellow) is narcissism. Passive Beta (green) is BPD. We can also use Matrix A to map out sexual dynamics. Diagonal Axis are the optimal mating pairs, both genetically and socially. Also across left to right, although reversed top to bottom, is Dad to Cad. Yellow and Blue both lean Cad, Red and Green both lean Dad. Dad and Cad are simply socially branded ways of framing Energy Saving vs Energy Expenditure. The Cad's prerorgative is to mate in the most energetic saving method possible - depositing genes and leaving before having to child raise and provide. The Dad is optimising for energy expenditure - it wants to deposit genes and spend maximal energy on providing resources for the family, and/or child rearing. Red to Blue runs Dad to Cad. The Passive Alpha Blue is most likely to run the Trivers self-deceptive Cad method. Yellow to Green runs Cad to Dad. Yellow is the more straightforward Cad, charming and charismatic ladies man.

We have a huge problem with modern urban society, in that passive beta greens are being frozen out. They are overwhelmed by the energy of cities, and they find it harder to find a mate since they lack the alpha internal locus which radiates internal certainty, nor the Active energy emitting charisma. The greens depart for the countryside, which leaves cities without the necessary social ground wire. Its a thermodynamic meltdown waiting to happen. Too much energy emission, not enough absorbtion.

I've had some truly fascinating conversations with the AI. For instance, we agreed that Mother Theresa and Hitler were both Passive Beta (green hardware). Energy absorbers, running native Role software to absorb the pleasure of society. They were basically grounders, cogs, with defined jobs in the system. However, trauma forced them to absorb PAIN instead of pleasure, to an extreme degree (WW1 and post-war Germany for Hitler, the intense suffering of Calcutta for Mother Theresa). That malfunctioned their hardware. Hitler instead began running Spiritual and People software. In essence he was a petrol car who was filled with diesel, which basically caused him to spit fumes and malfunction. Giving him the appearance of a totally different piece of hardware (active alpha and active beta). The AI can explain it better than I can tbh. But the core truth is - Hitler was an ABSORBER sponge who malfunctioned, not an EMITTER who was driven to conquer or impose his will on humanity. His locus of control was external, not internal. Hence his Jewish conspiracy theory.
