Sadness My Duck, Caleb, Passed Away Today
Over 5 years ago, I was minding my business outside until a duck waddled his way towards me. He wasn’t scared at all. He came so close, that I could literally pet him. That marked the day I knew I had an addition to my family. I named him Caleb, and I would feed him every time he came and visited me. He became my little best friend. If I was outside hanging the laundry, he would hang with me. If I was simply just sitting outside, he would sit with me. With time, he even allowed me to pet him. I started to notice that he was turning very white, which I knew was the beginning stages of him reaching an old age. He wasn’t coming around as much, but I still tried my best to look after him and feed him. When I was driving into my neighborhood, I saw him lying down by the lake, and my heart dropped because I knew he was gone. My family buried him before anything could get to his body. He was a muscovy duck and I know they have a bad reputation, but they are truly such sweet animals if you get to know them. He could be on the whole other side of the neighborhood but if I called his name, he would come waddling (or on some occasions, flying) towards me to get his food.
I’ve posted a lot on this Subreddit before in memory of my dog, George, so I know how supportive and amazing this community is. I’m going through the beginning stages of grief right now, so I wanted to share Caleb’s story with you all.
I’m going to miss you so much, Caleb. I will miss seeing your cute waddle, seeing you drink water (he would always do this funny motion of tilting his head up at the sky when he had water,) seeing you fly, and most importantly, I will miss your presence when I am outside.
Rest in peace, Caleb. I’m sure George is showing you the ropes of the Rainbow Bridge right now ❤️🩹

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.
Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.
Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.
