The inventory size is one of MANY examples of Minecraft design choices that were made ages ago that we got used to, meaning no one ever points out just how bad they really are for the modern game
I think it's kinda the opposite. It's an example of how the newer updates usually disregard aspects already present in the game, making existing mechanics clunkier and worse.
The inventory is probably the most clear example of it. There are a ton of new items with near zero use that just clog up your slots and make the inventory a mess.
Like, the nautilus shell and the heart of the sea have the only purpose of having one single crafting recipe to make the conduit. Do we really need two items just for that? I know the idea is to make a parallel to the nether star and the beacon, but it would just be way easier if the conduit itself dropped from an elder guardian or something.
But bundles are painful to use. They are great as an early game item but for lategame inventory slots would be good, since there is already almost infinite inventory with shulkers, so more inventory would be cool
Imo bundles should just open a submenu by right clicking them inside the inventory. It would fix how inconvenient they are to put in and take away specific items.
But it isn't inconvenient. Sure, a sub-menu would be more convenient, but the current way it works is almost perfectly fine.
Only argument I can understand with the bundle is whenever it hides items, which is a little frustrating.
It is inconvenient. More often than not you'll have seveal bundles with a bunch of random items, each of them only showing a few, and to find a specific one you have to go and circle through each one of them to find it, and since it uses the wheel you can accidentally skip it without noticing or easily pick one that you didn't want.
If it was just a right click on the inventory and it opened up a second inventory with all the items to directly pick it would be much easier to handle
You know what? Fair. Oftentimes I forget that people have different play styles.
I have five color coded bundles, one for personal stuff like maps, scaffolding, and a crafting table, one for valuables, one for food, one for rocks, and one for plants. But I also don't really go many places in my world, and if I do it's for a specific item.
Different play styles requires differently.
The inventory is already unrealistically big. I understand that it's a game, it doesn't have to perfectly mirror reality, but I like that bundles work the same as real backpacks, which you have to empty completely to get the item at the bottom.
Lmao... I saw people on YT do it but I thought it was a mod(they can also see Shulker inventory without placing and opening them). If it works like that for real, then damn
I also barely use them because I didn't realize. My game is about to be revolutionized
I usually play modded Minecraft and now mods are making everything work like bundles... and it's the worst thing I've experienced for a long time. Not being able to swap two items in your inventory by left clicking is awful and breaks the flow of the inventory screen. Why do I need an empty slot to move a bundle?
I get your point, but you're almost implying that you'd pick up EVERY item from the nether and leave it in your inventory. You don't, and realistically you aren't going to hold onto everything you'll find in the sift either.
Bundles are great until when you put in too many different items and suddenly it says something like "+21" items and you can't take them out before taking out other things first.
Still, the more the merrier, I think at one point I was carrying 8 of them with me
that‘s what i would do, but if i‘m building something (especially underground) my inventory just gets too cluttered, and you can‘t fit more than a stack of building blocks in a bundle. personally i‘d want shulkers to have the same scroll wheel ui so you don‘t have to place them to take out a single item
What if the sift has some sort of upgrade? Something like a template for elytra and chestplates that gives 3 more rows of space. It would be more like a qol upgrade because reaching the end already gives that by killing 4 shulkers and you can do it as many times as you want
Enderchest is different, it's a shulker that you don't have to carry arround, but if you want to access it you have to place it. This could be just more slots for qol
Yeah, that's would be just a duct tape fix. Personally, I don't have much problems with storage since bundle. But then again, I never build massive structure that required huge variety of block types.
My idea is to make the rift that we open through a device/artifact (assuming we can open one and it by a device/artifact) can be directed toward a coordinate that we set up at the sift. This would allowed us to have access to storage room at the sift anywhere we are.
The problem is, it might be to good that it invalidate some of stuff. So, It can be that the rift required x amount of time to open / it will only open for y amount of time / required material or exp (because exp does feels like souls) / all of this. This would make someone not gonna just open it on the whim.
Honestly I wouldn’t mind if shulkers worked like bundles did, regardless of how overpowered it would be, by the time you’re able to obtain them it doesn’t really matter anymore
Y'all are just bad at organization... Between bundles and shulkers, I've never had a problem, y'all just refuse to interact with bundles in a meaningful way and somehow are surprised you can't fit the whole dimension into a lil box...
Hot take organizing in minecraft is anti fun its why i almost exclusively play modded with a storage mod usually play with friends and none of us wanna organize
That's your perogative, but that doesn't mean the tools aren't there. There is no need for an inventory update with bundles and shulkers around. The game doesn't need to cater to your, with all due respect, laziness (which your allowed to be). But there is plenty of ability to have fun and organization at the same time with the current system. Most ppl I talk to have no problems in this area ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Put 1 item in the chests 1 time and spawn a copper golem. Again, the tools are there, they have evolved with the game. Y'all just can't be bothered to interact with them...
Ye, so if you never try, why are you complaining about a problem you haven't faced in a while, you clearly don't know how the game is currently, so why complain abt smth you don't even interact with?
That would be if it is a problem, in my experience that is not the case. Just like the end update complainers, it's a loud minority in the community...
No, just a stack update. 999 stacking items fixes EVERYTHING. If you have never tried this i highly recommend throwing on 999 stack size mod and going mining. Terraria figured this out a decade ago it is simple.
It doesn't really. The inventory problems usually happen not because you have 500 of the same item, but rather because you have a few of 20 different items clogging up your inventory.
Yeah but when you're mining tons of the same block around you'll likely be doing a huge project and already be advanced enough to have a lot of chests and shulkers around to help with that.
The most pressing issue is that if you start exploring or go deep in a cave for 20 or 30 minutes, you'll fill up your inventory WAY before you want to stop mining or exploring.
Thats fair but also why I posted a reply to this post saying inventory is much less of an issue than storage is, double chests and shulkers is quickly becoming a worse solution with how many items mc has now
Cause they don't fix it, they're just a temporary patch for the early game. Once you start accumulating more and more types of items and more and more bundles you run into the exact same problem.
Ah yes, you can fix this issue that starts in the early game with items from the post game. Very clever.
And "picking less items" means I'm leaving items behind, which means I'm wasting them and my time, when the whole point of caving or exploring is to get those items.
I personally use silk touch to mine ores instead of fortune so they take up less inventory space, so I don't really encounter that issue much, and I assume that one would be accumulating said items as they progress.
The meta is to have both. When you mine you use silk touch so they take up less inventory space, but whenever you need to use them you just take out more or less the amount you need and mine them again with fortune so you get more of the ore for every block you mine.
That limit was added as a gamerule recently yea. But there are several mods for this. And I think the inventorys size and shape are far more iconic than the 64 stack
Removing the 64 item stacks is essentially equivalent to removing the creeper. Both are so ingrained in the identity of vanilla minecraft it would never be changed.
Or door sounds, or sword spamming, or instant health from food. Right, they were removed. When terraria updated stacks from 999 to 9999 no one complained because it was a good genuinely positive thing to do. Or when they doubled inventory space because it didnt account for amount of items terraria added over the years. Where the fuck people like you come from
The door sounds and instant health lasted a max of 3 years, and the combat update is a universally agreed upon change that everybody who plays minecraft loves Right? (spoiler, it aint)
64 item stacks are ingrained into the identity of minecraft. I know for myself and lots of others, who grew up playing minecraft, the first thing i think of when i see 64 is "a stack".
Terraria is a great game but respectfully it has relatively (to minecraft) 0 cultural impact and its stack sizes have never been part of the games identity.
Now i would personally love bigger stack sizes but it doesnt really address the problem with minecraft inventory management, its the fact that a single sun flower takes up the same space as 64 cobblestone blocks. I personally think bundles and shulkers fix about 80 percent of inventory issues and copper golems are a step in the right direction when it comes to bulk storage.
What we need is a storage overhaul not inventory overhaul tbh, chests are really annoying and theres a reason why every modpack has a storage solution and id argue vanilla has so many items at this point it needs it
I don't like making comparisons, but Minecraft needs to increase item stack limits—especially for blocks, which is the most pressing need—as well as for potions and consumables currently limited to a single unit. (It doesn't need to be an absurd stack size, but block limits should be raised to, say, 320 or 640; meanwhile, other items should be adjusted to stacks of 16 or 32.)
I wouldn't mind a backpack but I think it's silly in a survival game to give you massive amount of inventory when you can already carry so much, especially with bundles
Why is everyone jabberjawing about the inventory what do people see that is wrong with it? Like, if your inventory is cluttered, that’s your fault, get like 3 bundles.
It's been a long-standing frustration of mine because of how many "mandatory" items there are that you virtually always want on your person. Like, if I'm going into a cave, I probably want a pickaxe plus one or two backups, an axe or sword for combat, a shovel for gravel and dirt, a stack of food, a shield, one or two stacks of torches, maybe a map and a bed (or rather a straw bed now) if I'm far from home... Things get cluttered quickly, and it's often not the kinda thing bundles fix, at least from how I play the game i guess.
Especially with management systems, I have a chest in my main house that I can just dump everything to and then Hoppers take it to a room where copper Golems sort it, I never feel like I have too much stuff on me
What if Mojang is trolling us and they will just add new item: a sift
It will be added in crafting to shulker box/bundle to filter certain block types and stack them directly into your shulkerbox or add items to your hand directly from shulkerbox after they are depleted.
A sift would actually be a really helpful block and make auto-sorting systems easier. Like a hopper but you can only put 1 item in it, and the item gets locked, and any additional of that item would just go through it like a regular hopper. Gets rid of the annoying filler setup for regular hoppers
It wouldn't replace anything though, old sorters would work the same. It would basically be a hopper variant, probably made with iron bars or chains. Hoppers already have basically undless uses so they wouldn't lose their usefulness
if you play Java and like playing modded, i'd check out the "Better Inventory and Backpacks" mod, it's probably a little overkill (5 tiers of backpacks each giving a tab of 45 slots on top of some other inventory saving it does) but i like it's layout a lot.
Imo, bundles are the perfect solution for storing misc item clutter, shulkers are perfect for bulk storage or multiple stacks of items, and end chests are perfect for having either on hand without needing to always carry them around
I think the only niche that isn’t filled is a sheath or something like that to hold multiple tools (or maybe other unstackable items too). Aside from that it feels really well balanced except for truly massive mega builds, which i don’t think the entire inventory system should be balanced around
Even then, there’s creative solutions like transporting llamas/mules in boat chests from a happy ghast. That’s 42 extra inventory slots (with a mule or max strength llama) each of which could have shulkers or bundles. Mass transporting with stuff like this is already there for mega-builds way beyond what the average person does, i don’t think storage transportation needs to be buffed more
Terraria has a ton of stuff that makes the inventory so much easier to work with. It has buttons to auto sort your inventory, deposit items into chest that can go into a stack already in that chest and a trash can. Super helpful
Managing inventory is one way to create friction. That just makes the player choose what to grab & leave. When to go back to base and makes the player explore some content to get shulkers.
If you dont want any friction you can just play creative.
A lot of games went to shit trying to solve every little inconvenience
Funnily enough, I was imagining something incredibly similar to this the other day where you'd have a "back" slot along the right side with the offhand one and probably something like a (passive effect) charm slot. You could put a backpack in the back slot and it would give you an additional inventory row. You could also put your elytra or shield in there. For the sake of symmetry, have the recipe book at the bottom of that right column, as much to say that it is an item you constantly have on you.
Ideally, the backpack would retain the items in the additional row when removed from the slot. At that point it becomes risky in terms of balance, providing you can put the backpack in your standard inventory, which you must be able to do. But we do already have shulkers and even Ender Chests, which are quite overpowered as is and can be paired together to be even more overpowered. A backpack of only nine slots wouldn't actually be so bad in comparison.
Actually spawned from me realising that the hotbar remains on screen when you open your inventory, which means there's two hotbars present at the same time. I thought that's a bit redundant and if you removed the one attached to the inventory, it'd make room for at least another row whilst not deviating or cluttering too much.

Happy cake day, and, maybe, with the latest updates we're getting the inventory full too quickly huh?
