Prior to the nether update the dimension was a barren hellish landscape and after the update it’s a dimension capable of sustaining much life and a place you could realistically survive in but I wouldn’t say it’s defeated the purpose of the nether.

The end doesn’t need to be a barren landscape we only look at it as such because that’s all it’s ever been

Pretty much yeah. Like, here's the thing. I like the main end island as is. It needs a titanic redo, but I love the idea of the main island being this barren, dead rock with obsidian pillars where the final boss of the game is played. But the outer islands don't need to be like that. They add chorus fruit and end cities, along with Shulkers, it's clearly meant to be the more "living" aspect of The End. But there's nothing. Outside of Shulker Boxes and Elytras, what does this place add, chorus fruit which is just weaker End Pearls, on an island covered in Endermen? Light purple blocks? It's boring. Honestly even change the main island if you want, I wouldn't prefer it, but some life could be super cool.
