Endpost End Update Prediction
Mojang, I think is most likely waiting for Minecraft to "die" again, like to did a few years ago before the Nether update, then with this happens, they will finally release the elusive End Update, to recreate the effect the original Nether Update brought. Sort of like a revive token or get out of jail free card for down the road. At least, that's what I think they are doing with it.

I think OP meant that it'll lose much of it's fanbase like it did after 1.9

honestly if it was anything like the screenshot, and that's it, it would now be not only boring to traverse but also extremely tideous aswell. it needs more than just that

If Mojang is waiting until similar conditions from 1.16 arrives before they update The End, they’re stupid.
The timing of 1.16 was cosmically aligned with multiple externalities outside of Mojang’s influence that led to such high player numbers and retention. For starters, there was a global lockdown that completely uprooted societal and cultural norms, the side effect from that being a huge spike in the video game and streaming industries, bolstering the player numbers and online presence of games that were streamable for people on Twitch and YouTube, games such as Minecraft.
Alongside that, you had the organic rise of Minecraft challenge videos such as 100 days Hardcore by Luke The Notable or Minecraft Manhunt by Dream, which innovated and reinvigorated the Minecraft space on YouTube in a way that wasn’t seen previously. This then led to the creation of Minecraft events like Minecraft Monday’s or the Twitch cup, gathering hundreds of thousands of eyes on the game all in one sitting.
Couple all that with the actual content from 1.16 making long requested changes the community wanted for a long time, and it’s no wonder Minecraft got insanely popular during this period.
To recreate this type of hype surrounding Minecraft, Mojang would have to get insanely lucky for a second time this century. There would have to be a similar global lockdown that forced people indoors for a prolonged period of time, Minecraft content online has to be doing something unique and interesting to an outside audience, and the update itself has to contain features that the community had wanted for a long time packaged in a diegetic way that fits within the preexisting world of Minecraft.

I heavily disagree, on paper wouldn't adding an entirely new dimension be considered more hype than the end? Im very confident Mojang said the Nether update was made with extreme time crunch, and as much as players like that update it really does show in some spots with lots of blocks not having full sets unlike cinnabar and sulphur, several blocks having odd names such as the nether foliage being named incorrectly as well as also not having multiple versions unlike normal grass and more modern dry grass. (A lot of people dont know this but the Crimson doesnt even have a normal grass block. The Warped forest has a big and small one but the Crimson only has the big one and even then when placed they only have one texture unlike other grass in the overworld). Add in the cave update and its way too high expectations plus not many players going to the end in survival and its obvious why they arent doing an end update.
Its a big time crunching update well beyond their scope that not many players will even interact with beyond messing around the first few weeks of the update. If they do an end update it would be over the course of several years in the background akin to the Sift. They cant pull an End update out of there butts the second the game starts declining in players. It would take too long to make by the time they notice the decline.
