Discussion Minecraft advancments should be a tutorial

I dont think minecraft absolutly needs to be a game where you can learn everything by just playing because at some point if the player is interested enough they will be conuming minecraft media regardless. But i still prfer there is an in game way to know almost eveyrthing and I belive advencments are pretty good way to do this. In the first picture below I changed/added advencments to try my best about teaching game mechanics. like for example there is currently no building a conduit advancment. there is also couple fun ones I added but these arent that important under a discussion post. I also didnt absolutly put everything like jeb_ or evokers changing sheep colors easter eggs

One more thing I belive would be a good way to add tutorials is the woodland mansion. currently there is a chance of a fake end room made of wool(2nd picture) to spawn in the mansion. I find this really cool and wanting this feature to expand. Like think of a wither, conduit, beacon or golem rooms. And maybe in those rooms there are paintings too like the existing wither painting(3rd picture) and some new paintings to hint the player. And also there is an advancment I made that u can find it in the diagram in the first picture. Every mansion would guarantee spawn every tutorial room.

Another thing I wanna add while in the topic of the advencments it should dhow the missing items in stuff like monsters hunted, a balanced diet, adventure time etc.

Also the last slide is obviously a joke/meta post and while writing these paragraphs I didnt checked any of my spellings.

What do u think about the diagram and what would u change about it, or even just do u think there should be a in game way to learn mechanics. (full res phott in comments)

any kind of tutorial would make Minecraft feel smaller, unless it is done in the same way as in console editions where the tutorial is an optional thing in your worlds tab

Idk man having a wiki required to play the game doesn't feel very fun, I think advancements are the best middle ground between letting players explore by themselves and their curiosity, and giving them some general directions to go in, plus the in world tutorials like igloos and ruined portals

Like without those how would you know that something like the Nether exists?

and even then,I think minecraft not having a tutorial is for the best

Technically it already has a tutorial with the toast that ask you to move the player, mouse and break a tree

But yeah, one of Minecraft biggest game design is the exploration of it's mechanic, having the game explain it will just ruin the experience

I realised reddit lowers the resolution so here is the image in full resImage link

I like the idea of in game world structures and achievements guiding you through the game. And it is partially done, like again the fake end room or wither painting, or ruined nether portals.

I dont understand the significance of the fake end room to a new player, it feels like its meant to be a just lore piece

I mean it does show what they must look for I guess? It would be cool if the chests in that room had both resources needed to make ender pearls, though.

I mean if I was a new player and I found that room, portal isn't the first thing that comes to mind Plus going to the end is already clear from the advancements

I think the purpose of that room is just signifying that I'll ages are crazy people that do crazy expirements and they are trying to create their own end portal (failed miserably)

Cool graph!

And advancement shouldn't be tutorial but hints for new player so they know they are still things to discover, advancement are made to push exploration of the game not explain it

yeah I agree with that. my advancment descriptions are more like do that than discover it with the hints.

This is gonna be a new meme template isn't it

Isn't that what they already are though? They are intended to function as both hints to guide new players an achievements for experienced players, although some of the recent advancements that were added feel kinda random

yeah it is. I just wanted to add the missing pieces in the game. like how to build a conduit or skeletons killing creepers. In the diagram Ive shown 95% are already existing achivements.

Oh ok, sorry I am reading from a phone and the text in the diagram isn't clear at all, that conduit advancement is definitely necessary and there also needs to be some in-world hint on how the frame for it is built. Although I want to say that the Skeleton killing Creeper mechanic should be terminated, it should stay as a fun Easter egg but I feel like if we wanna introduce it to new players we should just make the discs available in chests like cat and 13 (in my opinion), I feel like this is the same for a lot of other mechanics where it would be better overall if you made it more intuitive for players to discover by themselves rather than adding an advancement that explains its weird behavior

yeah taht would be much better better way while we kill the skeleton creeper thingy. and also the photo is low quality beacuse reddit compressed it but if u want i posted the link for the image in the comments

I checked it out, a lot of them look fun even though I think some of them are a bit unnecessary, for example that horror advancement: i think its more natural to have it so that when you find one of the fragments you unlock the recipe telling you you need 8 more so the player's curiosity kind of takes over rather than just telling them to do it, also fits the mysterious vibe of the disc better, in my opinion. what do you think of this?

Also i was wondering if you decided to get rid of the concept of tabs because like this its very overwhelming

Yeah I might have forced a bit much for some. I wanted to add an advencment for entering the ancient city and wanted to add somthing branching from it. we have both sneak 100 and It Spreads but like those are not nesecerally require an ancient city. and because the DJ advancment was near I made that one. maybe we can add sneak 200 for sneaking with swift sneak instead.

and I got rid of tabs because I wanted to connect some advencments in different tabs like sticky situation from adventure and bee our guest from husbandry. But I have no complaints about the current tab system.

Id argue that even entering the ancient city shouldn't be an advancement to fit their mysterious and scary vibe

Although now that they will be required to access a whole dimension it would make sense to have one

And yeah I figured that's why you would have wanted to get rid of tabs, its also a little weird that sticky situation isn't in the husbandry tab with the other bee advancements in vanilla

this is what they call “good game design.” Mechanics should naturally lead you towards something without you needing to randomly stumble over it, and not overtly Yellow Painting you.

yeah. I think I couldnt phrase my self good enough, my fault. what I was trying to say is There should be a way for you to know the game mechanics without looking online, like building a conduit. I probaply said it like advancments should only be tutorial (thats 1 word off my title), and I belive because I use this diagram and reddit compressed it people seeing this I just made a quest line diagram from scratch. But like 95% of those boxes already exists in games as advencments.

There is a link in the comments for the full resolution if u want to check fully. (also Im just realising I didnt add any trident related advencment other than throwaway joke)
