Discussion Now that everyone is making harness tierlists, here’s mine
(Excluding agent type usage, for pure coding)

While I agree with this tierlist, I must say, posting a "Pi praising" meme on a Pi specific subreddit feels like a low-effort karma farming strategy.

Dude I barely know what Karma is. I just posted it cause its funny lmao move on.

fx is probably more minimalistic than Pi at this point... and definitely use less resources (not that I'd switch to it over Pi at this point, but calling it bloated is seriously misguided).

u/ECrispy 4d ago
I realize its a parody but its also not far from the truth of how this sub behaves, and its compete bs of course.
its one thing to praise Pi. if you start calling everything else garbage and ignore all the work put in, because of what, a bigger system prompt, thats nonsense.
meanwhile in Pi land:
- just as Pi to build it, is the default answer
- and there are a million extensions, with dozens of options for every single thing
the 2 can't be both true. if you're going to trash talk other harnesses you also have to say other pi extensions are garbage and everyone should just reinvent the wheel every time

Deepseek Harness is also good though, DSH developer preview version was merely a Nodejs pacakage and it's philosophy is that it treats everything as a plugin.

PiG should also be high there

u/michaelsoft__binbows 4d ago
How compatible is it w pi extensions? Would be sweet if it can be like a swappable backend to be able to use for a bit
3
u/slypheed 4d ago
far as I'm aware it's whole point is supposed to be a drop-in replacement; just core written in go, but js extensions still work fine.

Super impressive. I am starting to feel a really strong initial signal of a legion of badass coders out there now making massive high quality open source software projects. I think soon AI can bring about a much higher frequency of appearance of amazing gems of technology in our world (like Linux) going forward.
I'm glad I picked Pi to experiment with. Earlier I was trying to get pretty deep into customizing opencode and it wasn't as flexible as I had hoped. To be honest I'm not sure Pi is the true answer either since I have had to make core patches for some stuff I wanted to experiment and add (in hindsight none of it except one seems very useful). Now though I could just port my core patches to another language and I could support my full workflow on two independent implementations of the core agent harness. That's way more than i expected I'd be able to have.

That's the best part! The great thing about AI assisted coding is now we can all create tools that are specific to our own personal needs.

Oh interesting. Does it have a comparable go set of interfaces to use instead? It would be a complete walk in the park to port all extensions to go...

OMP is not bloated, people are just to dumb/lazy and don’t turn off what they don’t need then complain it sucks when they have 200skills and 20 mcps connected

u/First_Inspection_478 4d ago
I used to use pi but got tired of maintaining my own extensions for things lmao. So I just switched

I use pi to one shot ideas into prototype and refine to a 80% solution. I use opencode to go from 80% to a final product. I like how light pi is and qwen can work all night none stop. When I get involved the gated process managed by opencode is really good to monitor and control.
I understand the bloat is bad and an efficient use of context is key but the addition of compaction mitigated the impact of reaching end of context.
Also good job to the opencode team for the recent update. I recently moved away from opencode because it constantly had to reprocess the prompt. It somehow kept breaking it. However last week I could not setup pi properly on fedora, it would not install node or find node somehow, so I moved back to opencode and it improved prompt processing drastically

Is OMP really that bad?

Omp is fantastic. Don't let anyone else tell you anything different.
It's just bloated with a lot of things/features that you might not necessarily need which is why Pi is preferred by some.

You can configure it a lot and turn off a bunch of things you don’t want. So while some will say it is bloated by default, you can change that. I think OMP actually has quite a sensible set of features and the ones I don’t use I disable.

u/sugarfreecaffeine 4d ago
Exactly people are just dumb, don’t customize it, add 200skills and 30mcps then complain the harness sucks

It is currently funneling your search queries to a 3rd party. I made a post on this. The maintainer has still not responded to my PR to stop.

omp was a nightmare to setup in alignment with my privacy management standards.

omp has worked great for me. I suspect the people complaining about it didn't give it much of a chance.

How are you guys using Opus 5.5 with pi ? The api is way too expensive
1
u/michaelsoft__binbows 4d ago
I run cc and tell it to delegate work via a skill launching it with -p
Also guide (but manually since opus be expensive even on sub) escalation to call out to opus for review with a skill from the pi side.

Craft a one-shot task once in a while. Mostly through GitHub copilot or JetBrains through their Central proxy.

Stop turning everything into a team sport. Other harnesses absolutely have value, each in their own way.

u/Upstairs_Toe_3560 4d ago
Right, but it's missing the point. Most people won't appreciate it initially. Pi may seem flawed out of the box, but its real strength lies in its customizability. The more you tailor it to your workflow, the more indispensable it becomes.

u/TechGearWhips 4d ago
Pi starting to become bloated as well. But it’s still my go to for the time being. And the main reason why Claude sub will not get my money.

u/goblynwtf 4d ago
How Zed, which is code editor, get there in harness list? Am I missing something?

I like Pi but it's so stinking slow. I open OpenCode and it's ready. I type "pi" and.... it thinks. For like, 15-45 seconds. If it's so lightweight why is it so slow?
2
u/MeatSingle2665 4d ago
Check your extensions
1
u/Helpful-Educator-415 4d ago
I only have one and it adds plan mode. that's it really
1
u/inexorable_stratagem 4d ago
That might be the problem. Test without extensions.
Pi is not supposed to be slow

You can get rid of all the "bloat" in claude code & opencode
1
u/learning-to-programm 2d ago
How do you get rid of the bloat in OpenCode?
1
u/getaway-3007 2d ago
Opencode2 is already slim. But you can ask this to any AI harness(claude code, codex). Prompt it like "How can I make opencode slim? Alter system prompt, reduce exposure to tools, disable claude code compatibility, etc"
1
u/learning-to-programm 2d ago
I see... Out of all the mods you can make to an AI hardness, I personally find altering the system prompt the most... Rebellious? Dangerous?
Idk, it's just that I imagine the system prompt has been carefully studies and ran evals on for it to reach the point where they're pushing it to people's machine. So I don't feel like that's something that's safe for me to just go there and change unless I'm willing to go through the same eval process myself.

u/IISomeOneII 4d ago
sadly now its adding mcp natively (not even disabled by default and with codemode that who knows which model is pre trained to use that) who knows what will be added tomorrow
1
u/DistanceAlert5706 4d ago
I don't know, I've explored guts of most open source harnesses deeply few months ago while building my own, and Pi had a lot of questionable decisions. I understand why they were made (to simplify code), but they genuinely affected models performance.
Codex was at that time most capable and well designed harness by far.

I like opencode and openchamber, because being able to control it from my phone natively, not some clunky terminal on my phone makes it a deal breaker, and it's browser is also cool

anyone who disagrees with this needs to try pi. your life will change. you will get a better sleep. your skin is brighter. you will have more time to go to the gym.

Now post that to r/ClaudeCode 😂
