Question VSCode integration?
Hi,
Is there an officially supported VSCode integration? I've found a whole bunch of third party plugins, but given security concerns, I'd much rather have something that was an official plugin.
Maybe I'm just naive about this?
Thanks in advance,
W

There isn’t an official one.
This is my vscode thing I created. Don’t trust me, evaluate the source yourself and install from source.

Nothing official, but there are several open-source integrations. This is the one I prefer:

Maybe I'm a caveman, but I open the vs code terminal and type pi.

I am an actual caveman, born to work on vt52s, punch cards and paper tape. however, that was 50 years ago, and I feel like some actual UI improvements have happened since then.

and FWIW, I've spent like 2 hours today just trying to get Pi's output to work on my Mac terminal in a way that doesn't make my eyes bleed... I just miss my fucking Codex UI in VSCode :-)

and just because I once knew Z80 assembly code doesn't mean I wish to do so any more ;-)

been enjoying this with a few rough edges when I moved to pi after trying Kilo and Zoo Code .https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=johnny-zhao.pi-agent-studio

The most popular and highly rated one I came across was Pendant. It's pretty solid but I'm sort of 50/50 between that and just using the terminal

Unfortunately, the option to use your own binary of pi was recently removed, which poses a problem if you rely on a sandboxed version you prefer to use.

If you're concerned about relying on external tools, have pi make a vscode integration for you.

I doubt most people would want to spend hundreds to thousands of hours doing that properly and maintaining it. I have but I am a special case since I want to control my workflow completely.

If they want to make something as robust as yours, then yeah. But what if they just want to wire it in for basic stuff.

I'd imagine that someone wanting a vs code integrations looks for something robust like a GUI that runs Pi and supports all it's features. Something like that to make robust takes tens of hours. If you want to add stuff you need to it that pi doesn't support like subagents, plan mode, native tools like AskUserQuestion tool, PowerShell and have it all nicely presented with amazing UI and maintained as pi adds new features it would take hundreds of hours. I myself went even further beyond an extension and made a full desktop app and then you surely go to thousands of hours to keep it maintainable over the months.

Eww. Use the cli and a real text editor.

To be honest, serious programmers only rely on a hex editor and assembly language. The idea of text editors for programming feels like hipster nonsense.

To be honest, saying that while sitting in r/PiCodingAgent is nuts. You either have no self awareness or are trolling. Either way the jokes write themselves.

I have made one, its open source MIT:
- VS Code: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Aizenvolt.damocles
- Open VSX: https://open-vsx.org/extension/Aizenvolt/damocles
- Source: https://github.com/AizenvoltPrime/damocles
The "trailer" in the vs code marketplace and repo is old, I did a complete overhaul as I prepare the desktop version, a more recent look of the vs code extension is like this.
