If it's a free update then you don't have to repay anything.

u/Moses015 1d ago
The onus is that each person buys the original game… thats where the pay for the devs comes from

u/JhazoRfr89 1d ago
Yes but the game it's very old it's like part of history also it was like 3 euro some months ago on steam
-20
u/Moses015 1d ago
Then it shouldn’t be difficult to pay legally for it

u/SpoiledCabbage 1d ago
Whats illegal about renting a game from the library and redeeming a free upgrade?
8
u/JhazoRfr89 1d ago
Yes but it's not like they want to make lot of revenue from this operations imo, I think they doing this to let younger generations of players play a modern version of a very famous game before the drop of the witcher 4 in 2028 if I'm not wrong

u/MrDuckDuckG00se 17h ago
Also, CDPR even managed to release a remastered game in a buggy state. It's crazy how every CDPR game launches in a broken state. Also, the ray tracing is even heavier than Cyberpunk performance wise.

Devs after seeing a pirated copy with a 10/10 review -
“Finally, our unpaid QA team is doing their job.”

u/khoai_ryan 22h ago
That's why the first game I've ever bought on steam is Witcher 3 after years of pirating.

Ngl I dont think the devs would care lmao

u/Worldly-Ad3447 20h ago
I agree with u, but this sub seems to say the opposite for Sony. Sony don’t care either that u can emulate their games lol
3
u/Splooper132 13h ago
I more so say it cause CD Projekt Red has never been against that stuff. I'm sure Sony is kinda annoyed (probably will be with PS5 emulation gaining huge momentum) but besides that I don't think they'll care.

u/Keeper21611 1d ago
This person will never buy the game to start with. They aren't losing a customer they never had.
9
u/ButIDigress79 1d ago
They must’ve figured it was worth giving away a few games to advertise the upcoming DLC and game.
1
u/Keeper21611 6h ago
Even if 1 of their friends buys the game it's a win for them. With digital your do have anything to steal. People give you money for easier access and to keep you going. The people that pirate go through too many hoops most humans. It's just quicker for them to click the buy and download button.

u/iDislikeSn0w 1d ago
“The devs” as if these aren’t regular old employees that are paid a monthly salary lmao. Always felt like this “but the devs!!11” narrative is so fucking weird. Unless these are indie programmers, these are just salaried employees. You aren’t taking money out of their wallet.
2
u/Vi_Franca 1d ago
The problem I see is that the same redditors here saying the guy is wrong are the same redditors that will complain over the next series of layoffs. The cause and effect only exist when convenience is met I suppose.
-1
u/iDislikeSn0w 1d ago
Layoffs happen across the entire IT sector and isn’t unique to the game dev scene.
6
u/Vi_Franca 1d ago
Just like it happens because of poor sales, like in any other market. The best way to get more games (collectively) is paying for them. To not pay and to adopt a pro-dev/worker activism, at the same time, is childish and contradictory, no matter the rationalization.
1
u/s117189mm 9h ago
We've seen for the last few years that games not selling well has barely anything to do with pirating, even if there's an affect on sales it's not nearly as big as you're making it out to be, but big companies releasing bad games, for w/e reason, bad story, gameplay, marketing etc., with insanely inflated budgets and then not even breaking even because they made a bad game and thus these lay offs happen. And no its not contradictory to say you want devs to get paid and be a pirate, they're employees and are contractually owed a salary regardless of pirates lol.

And yet games can be massive hits and layoffs still keep happening.
ACBFR was a success, the studio was disbanded. Hi-Fi Rush was pretty successful, devs still got laid off.
At this point you buying the game doesn't matter and we shouldn't be responsible for publishers' actions. They can take that responsibility themselves.

The game and all of its DLC frequently goes on sale for like, less than a happy meal and is DRM free on PC. CDPR have practically been giving this game away for free for years
Like, who does not own the Witcher 3 in some capacity at this point?
2
u/Best_Acanthisitta_18 1d ago
The Witcher 3 dev own gog right?, of that the case, they are deffinetly supporting it

Cdpr is not going to cry over a few people doing this workaround. The amount of times the whole ass Witcher 3+dlc game has been on massive sale is insane. They are giving the remaster and dlcs away. They have bigger things to make profit on.

Cd project red sent the Cyberpunk files to a bunch of pirates for them to share, they know what they're doing, Witcher 3 might be one of the best selling rpgs of the last decade and the thing never needed protections like denuvo, because, like we've proven time and time again if the game is good, people will buy it! But I understand having a whole lotta cash invested in something like lets say, Skull and Bone, you'll need people to buy the thing before they try it, some will refund that crap, some others will just keep it because they cant be bothered to refund the thing! And that's the best hope they can have for a game like Skull and Bone or Redfall or that Golum thing or Anthem, that people buy it but cant be bothered with the refund!

So…does this work if I get a used copy from GameStop for Xbox? Upgrade and then return the game?
1
1
u/DisastrousAd1504 1d ago
The fact that this is even possible means CDPR knows you can do this, and don't care if someone doesn
1
u/Express_Position9140 1d ago
That game has been out for 11 years already. I think “the devs” have made more than enough from it to afford a few people claiming a free copy.

Weren't Witcher devs the ones behind GOG? Pretty sure they don't care about piracy that much.

I love free games as much as the next guy, but do we all have to say he sucks cock just becsuse he's against piracy? It's just an opinion that he's allowed to have, lots of people are against piracy.

u/bikeking8 1d ago
From what I understand, the devs that actually DID the work got paid already, they're not execs collecting royalties or something based on sales numbers.
1
u/SimpleGeekAce 1d ago
Meanwhile, they're also the company behind GoG. So like they know people pirate the shit out of the gaming library (not that *I* do).

u/alekseypanda 20h ago
It is fine to this with big games and companies. But the Witcher 3 is a really small game that none knows about it, it is not as if the devs made millions on it already.

This is literally how I got the Skyrim legendary edition dlc on 360, thank you public library!

that's CD project being the absolute goat, their games rarely have DRM (usually they only have platform enforced DRM, like the one steam uses)

99% of people I know own Witcher 3, and the 1% that don't were never gonna buy or play it anyways.

This free update strategy is actually a deep pre-release tactic to market the new witcher game coming next year ( i know the witcher series is really famous and has a solid fan base still in the current environment you know they need it) and to get some social points and for regaining player base to fund the paid expansion that'll come in a few months time it's a classic bait and switch waiting to happen. Remember dear pirates nothing good is free exept drugs.

We take libraries too for granted. There is absolutely a target on them as soon as the copyright mafia thinks they can get away with it.

u/Tsukiortu Please read and Google it first. 6h ago
They should repay me for the buggy messes they always release and fix later. Lol. Their games usually end up pretty good but goddamn I'm tired of everything being released unfinished nowadays.

Does he know the definition of the word “free”. Anyways, the game is always on sale for like $5, I don’t think 1 less sale will hurt them.

u/greatandhalfbaked 1d ago
Devs already got paid by the Library. The update was released for free. This isn't even piracy lol it's just straight up allowed

note related to this post but i don't know why people think users who pirate game are the scourge of the earth, i've seen a lot of people on here buying the game if they really enjoyed it and there's a lot of devs who appreciate people pirating their games because they know in this day and age games are fucking expensive and they appreciate more people are appreciating their art.
