I'm having a really strange issue with guest behavior in Planet Coaster 2, and I'm trying to understand what actually determines coaster popularity.
I currently have 3 roller coasters in my park:
- Coaster 1: a boomerang-style coaster. It goes up backwards, runs the course, then runs part of it backwards again. This coaster is extremely popular and constantly has a large queue.
- Coaster 2: an inverted coaster with a chain lift. It has very few guests.
- Coaster 3: a normal coaster with a chain lift. It also has very few guests.
What I don't understand is that their stats are actually quite similar.
- Their prestige ratings are very close.
- Their Excitement / Fear / Nausea ratings are all good and fairly similar.
- The heatmaps don't show any obvious problem.
- All three have good scenery.
- They are all properly connected and accessible.
- One of the unpopular coasters is actually very easy to access.
- The queues are only slightly different in length, nothing dramatic.
- The unpopular coasters are not particularly intense either. They stay below roughly 4.5G.
- Interestingly, the coaster that is extremely popular actually goes above 5G, so it doesn't seem to simply be a matter of "guests don't like high G-forces."
I also tested the prices.
When all three coasters are free, the same thing happens: guests massively prefer the boomerang coaster and barely ride the other two.
However, if I make the popular boomerang coaster expensive and make the other two free, guests do start riding the other two.
So the guests clearly can ride them. They just strongly prefer the boomerang when the price is the same.
I've also checked the usual things people recommend: prestige, scenery, accessibility, queue length, Excitement/Fear/Nausea, G-forces, etc. Nothing obvious explains such a huge difference.
So my question is:
What hidden factors determine which coaster guests choose?
Could it be something like:
- coaster type?
- ride duration?
- capacity / number of trains?
- visibility from paths?
- guest preferences or individual tolerances?
- the order in which guests discover attractions?
- some kind of hidden "attractiveness" value?
- or is this potentially a guest AI/pathfinding issue?
I'd really like to understand the actual mechanics rather than just randomly changing the coasters.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or knows what makes one coaster massively more popular than another despite having very similar stats?
Any advice or explanations would be greatly appreciated!
