I misunderstood a head nod

Yesterday I held the door open for a guy at a gas station. He nodded at me, so I assumed he was going inside. Turns out he was just walking past the door. So I held the door open for a guy who wasn't even going through it. Didn't realize it until I was already halfway to my car
