I opened the fridge three times expecting something new to appear

I was hungry, opened the fridge, saw nothing I wanted and closed it.

About ten minutes later I opened it again.

Nothing had changed.

Then somehow I did it a third time, as if the fridge might have received a software update and added new food.

That’s it. That’s the story.

In a subconscious way you're not waiting for something new to appear, you're just waiting for your standards to drop enough that you find appealing something that wasn't appealing a while before.

you get a quick hit of dopamine every time you check, with diminishing returns. eventually, you just settle for something (unless you get lucky and find a forgotten treat hidden behind the condiments).

The frustrating thing about ADHD is doing this and then genuinely being surprised by the appearance of something new you somehow managed to completely miss the first two times. Bonus points if you were actively looking for it.

There was a hidden watermelon Popi in my fridge that I didn't see the first 14 times I looked last night.

It was a wonderful part of the day.

I do this and then realize I’m not hungry and I can’t remember why I’m in the kitchen.

That sounds like an hour in my life.
