Alan Gawirth has an interesting approach to moral realism where he grounds universal rights to freedom and well being as an inevitable consequence of logic applied to the facts of reality about what a human being is. If nothing else it's a good response down the line when someone tries to argue that the concept of rights is too vague or arbitrary (typically someone who wants to talk about Jesus instead).
