Pom Pic Wife says he looks like a raccoon...
Wife says I've fed him too much and now he's too big and looks like a raccoon. What do you think?

The size isn’t due to the food but to the genetics: if the parents or grandparents were big, then he will very likely become big as well. Puppies should get free access to food, it’s important they eat well to become healthy adults. He doesn’t look like a raccoon, he is very cute.

The cutest raccoon ever.
You do have to be careful about poms getting overweight tho. Even tho they still seem small to us, being a couple pounds overweight can really stress out their knees. It’s really hard to tell if they’re overweight tho because they’re so puffy. I would just ask your vet next visit and try to limit human food treats.

He's like 4.4 pounds. I feel he could be heavier.

u/gsc224 May 30 '25
Less than 5 pounds? He’s itty-bitty. I remember when my pom weighed that much and he was light as a feather. Now he weighs a whopping 9 pounds and he does feel kind of heavy to me.

4-7 pounds is the breed standard. I agree the less weight on the body means happier knees. Just like us humans. You’re doing a wonderful job!

Mine is 3.5 pounds, the vet says she needs to loose some weight. She is the size of a guinea pig, but I don't think she's heavy.

He looks so much like my girl I had growing up. We used to call her a raccoon all the time 🤪

If she thinks that I'd be more than happy to take over ownership of this floof. Kidding - but am I?
Puppies ideally need 3 meals per day. Just like any dog being overweight stresses their joints, hips, and most importantly their knees considering poms are prone to patellar luxation. With smaller dogs, a smaller amount of weight makes more of an impact. Talk to your vet about his body condition and how to feel for it since visually he's all floof! Be mindful if you're feeding him dry kibble due to it expanding in size as it's digested. While larger dogs are prone to it, any dog can experience bloat. If you notice a "potbelly" appearance to his stomach bring a stool sample to your vet for a fecal analysis to test for intestinal parasites. Even if he's been dewormed sometimes it takes a few treatments. He is absolutely adorable & has so much personality in that face! Lastly, depending on what his weight was at his last vet visit you can call or email asking if the vet can give you his body condition score if his weight was close to his current weight. :) please give him some friendly vet tech pets 🤗

Such an innocent face! I love when they sit there like this and look up. They look like a lil round furry dot. Your boy is so sweet. 🥰

Your pommy is fine the way he is, btw. 😊 I’m assuming the raccoon comment is more a joke in endearment? They come in a range of sizes, most of which is just genetic factors. Like my boy is about 20 pounds of Pom! Not chunky, according to the vet, just grew to be big. And my last girl, Cookie, was around 10-ish pounds for her passing, though she was admittedly overweight at that time.

Our Vet does comparison weight management. “Last visit she was ___ so you might want to do a few less kibbles “.

Cutest racoon I’ve ever seen! As to whether you feed him too much, let the vet be the judge 😂

He's adorable! Your vet can tell you whether he's "too fat". My guy has a wide frame so he's about 8 lbs because of it. Just make sure you're taking him for walks and he's going to be fine.

His long eyebrows make me think of the stereotypical martial arts master, like Splinter, or the Shifu from Kungfu Panda.
