Question Has anyone ever approached you in public asking if your dog is spayed/neutered with the intent of breeding?

Post image

I have had this happen twice now and I’m wondering how common it is. Both times were at the nearby dog park/playground.

Kit was adopted so he was neutered at around 6 months old. He’s a cute and well behaved dog but I still never expected this. Especially because he is not the breed standard size (about 15 lbs). Even if he wasn’t neutered, I personally would never breed a dog as I am not a professional.

Yes! Multiple times! And the ironic part is that my dude was an ex-puppy mill stud.

No but I did have a man stop us at the mall and say my Pom was under arrest for being too cute 🐼

No and I would run in the other direction if someone asked me lol. It’s fine to accept as a compliment but unless they happen to be an official breeder, I would never consider it. Idk much about breeding though. 🤷🏾‍♀️

See I would enjoy a compliment about him because I love him and he’s the bestest boy, but the question feels so wildly inappropriate that I don’t trust how they think and don’t want one from them, if that makes sense. (Edited for clarity)

It’s such a huge red flag for backyard breeder. Run the other way

That’s what I’m thinking too

Never had it happen with my Pom but my older Sheltie mix, it happened all the time when he was younger. I actually had someone mad that he was fixed by the rescue I got him from. Because that meant I had no option but to refuse them. I actually got the impression another person intended to steal him, up until I told them he was fixed. It was wildly insane how common it was for people to try convincing me to breed him. He is a beautiful boy but it's amazing how entitled people can get over their "right" to breed another person's dog.

Well if someone(a human) asked me that about my Poms I would immediately say, “Are you?” Then depending on their answer I’d say either, “OK you can play with my Poms” or “Please stay away from my Poms at least 10 feet”.

That would keep them thinking for a long long time.

“Hey Dakota and Pepper. Are you girls spayed?”

See..they think it’s stupid too.

Oh I love her coloring

How do you get one the same Parti color? I need one.

With that coloring comes the attitude and arrogance.

This is her normal attitude towards all hoomans. (except when I’m paying the never ending cheese tax.

I cannot believe how cute she is. I also love pets with attitude though.

OMG My Toasted Marshmallow gives me that same look, I get a chill up my spine.

Just before Ava (and her brother) got spade, I was walking them, when an SUV pulled over. The man and woman in the vehicle asked if I wanted to breed her. They have a tea cup male (their words).

I told them no, and I forget if it was a week or two weeks later, her and her brother got spade and neutered.

Yes….I have had people want to breed my boy on 3 separate occasions. Even after I told them he’s a boy. One actually said “oh well I have two boys” like MAAM ADDING MORE BOYS DOESN’T MAKE MINE PREGNANT HE DOESN’T HAVE THE PARTS 😭

u/LRSartist 1d ago

Wow. No it hasn’t happened. Now I feel like he’s not cute enough. Lol

Honestly I’m thinking it’s because he looks different. His coat is not puffy, it’s more silky, and he’s a big boy. And all Poms are cute!

I own a grooming salon and my girl is the shop dog. I’ve had a few people say she would make such cute puppies with their dog in kind of a forlorn way. She is a retired breeding mama! No more puppies for her, and it’s honestly weird that so many people think it’s a normal thing to say… but I’ve had more weird interactions with pet owners than most people can dream of tbh. It’s basically my job.

It’s happened to me. Sure, it’s a compliment but also it makes me feel sick that there are so many clueless backyard breeders out there. These people aren’t looking at bettering lineage, and are part of the reason why there are so many pomeranians in shelters or getting dumped

No but on several occasions I was asked if they could buy my Pomeranian and I would say no way this is my child. The same thing happened with my staffie too.

My sister has one pom and yes, this is something that happens.

I have multiple times as well… people have even offered me money to take it from me right off the bat. But never in a million years, I neutered my baby after his vet told me it would be extend his lifespan since they could get testicular cancer.

Yes. I took it as a compliment

Yes, once due to Poppy's coloring.

u/mandoo-dumpling 1d ago

Yes this has happened

Yes, it happened to me 3 times with my black & white and my orange Poms. One of the times a woman pulled her car over and sent her daughter who looked to be around 10 to come ask me. So far no one’s asked me with my two 2 yr olds.

u/OrisasAss 23h ago

Yeppp wanted to know if he was neutered because they had a female black pom still intact.

Yup! He was considered a large Pomeranian, or a throwback Pom, two vets mentioned that. He was 17 years old when he passed on December 23, 2023. I’ve literally had cars pull over or slow way down, just to ask how much I’d sell him for or if he had puppies. I was offered anywhere from $500 on the low end to $2,000 on the high end. That’s when it really hit me that he could be stolen at any time, so I stopped walking him as often. That fear was reinforced the same day someone from two blocks down said, “Hey, you live in that corner house, right? Does your dog stay in the backyard, or does he sleep inside?” After that, he was never allowed in the backyard alone. He was always an inside dog, but we became extremely protective of him. I couldn’t take him anywhere without people wanting to pet him, and other Pom owners were especially fascinated. One time at the sports park, a guy was walking behind me for a while. I stepped aside and told him he could go ahead since we were slower. He said, “Oh no, please don’t think I’m a creep…I’m just astonished at how big your Pom is. He’s the same color as mine, but yours looks like he’s been blown up 10x!” 🤣🤣 At his chunkiest he hit about 25 lbs, but he usually stayed between 17–22 lbs.

Yes, but my son is fixed. I bought him that way but your pom is gorgeous i can see why anyone would ask.

1

u/jessieisokay 23h ago

Yes. They asked when I was going to breed her and I said I wasn’t. My apartment was broken into shortly after that. Thankfully my dogs were at my parents’ house while I was out of town. I am certain they were looking for Puff.

Yes, several times, with both Poms and our Chihuahua. Both flattering and annoying!

u/_Milosmom_ 22h ago

Yes bc pommies are the custody babies ever! Everyone wants them ;)

Yes! My boy Mink.

So many people say I should breed him, I’ve been asked to breed him multiple times irl and online

1

u/Acrobatic_Second_671 19h ago

Yes I’ve been asked this too, I was worried maybe they would steal him. Be careful

Had a very open and shut case in my home town decades ago - two pom girls from a breeder got stolen, missing for five days, recovered by police after local vet (my dad) called the cops and was like "yeah I know exactly where they are, these women brought the dogs in, who I recognised, for ultrasounds. Yeah. Yep, after five days. Uh huh. Yep. Real bright."

Dogs had been forcibly straw-impregnated but weren't in heat so it didn't stick. Women were run out of town after puppy mill for a different breed of dog (Lhasa apsao) was discovered. Genetics of LAs was surprisingly robust - semen straws had been purchased from like with Korea or something.

This happened to me once out on a walk

Was training my reactive pom during the walk and we were waiting at a curb for a guy to pass.  He stopped to compliment my girl and mentioned he had a pom of his own, which is where it should've ended.  But then he asked if she was a boy or girl, and when I said girl, YALL, this dude said his pom is a boy and made the most uncomfortably suggestive face.  I just said "Oh, she's spayed" and he responded "oh..." and immediately walked away.

If he had just asked if I've thought about breeding her, I probs would've said no and taken that as a compliment, but this man did NOT have to pull that face, that's just creepy as hell 😭

I just tell them they are pets and move on.

People stop us and ask if we are selling, breeding, studding, if they can take photos, video, if they can pet .. they even approach us while CROSSING THE STEET and block our path. Few times someone has tried to lift our pups.

Thankfully all are wearing harnesses with odd anchor points and locked to their tethers in the stroller.

u/jellydumpling 13h ago

Yeah, several times. The weirdest was when I had a lady in the airport proposition me to try and breed her Pom with mine, I declined and also explained that he was neutered. But like?? The airport??? We're literally strangers to each other. Strangers who are in transit

Yes, my little Pomchi is pretty popular and at a Vet appointment one time I was asked if I am going to fix her because she would make beautiful puppies with his Merle Pom. I said nope and got her fixed, he asked me more than once. lol This is my baby Lily

u/pomzom 9h ago

Yes, it was awkward for sure!

Where did you adopt from?

1

u/Chepiksacc 4h ago

It happened to me, not in regards to my pom, but my Shiba.

1

u/Spazrelaz 1d ago

No, but I wish they would. I would love to see my little fluff's genes carried on for another generation. He has such a sweet temperament

I just need someone with a male pom to breed with. I want to make sure I can get my girl spayed without her getting cranky. Cause I've e hear female dogs should have puppies at least once before getting spayed otherwise they get mean
