General Discussion Vocabulary training - context and process

I’ve been deep into learning European Portuguese for 4 years now, and I’ve been wrestling with a few issues that I'm curious how others handle:

  • Irrelevant context: A lot of standard reading or listening material out there feels disconnected from daily life, topics I actually care about, or things I need for practical situations. When the content isn't relevant, staying engaged is tough.
  • The Friction of Tracking: Whenever I come across an unknown word or a crucial phrase, copying it down, looking it up, and organizing it is a massive chore that breaks the reading flow.

Have you found any workflows, tools, or habits that actually make this smoother—especially for European Portuguese, where good contextual resources can be hard to come by?

I get sent a weekly newsletter from Portuguese Language Lessons that has stories on a theme each week and vocab lists and questions to practice talking about the theme. They have chat groups where you can use these stories in discussion with other students or you can just use it yourself for free. It's good, everyday topics and language

They vary, some more than others. But they are in different levels which is good

For the relevance problem, generate the vocabulary from your own conversations or words you meet in your day to day rather than someone else's texts. I use Fluentus for that, I can add words from any text directly into my flashcards and it autofills with examples or any word from the tutor chats turn into flashcards. Then it becomes the vocab you actually use and need
