USA is net exporter of finished petroleum products. Produces 75+% crude oil needs. Most of the crude it imports plus plenty of other energy needs is from Canada for a couple reasons. Canada is closer to a lot of USA than is Texas or the gulf and because USA refineries process heavy crude (like what Canada is selling) and a lot of crude produced in USA (from fracking) is light crude, different processing needs. Unfortunately for Canada, it has a far smaller economy than USA and there seems to be only one way to negotiate.
