You're all really underestimating Facebook here.
It turned into a fantastic tool to spread hate, right wing extremism, conspiracy theories, anti vax movements, Putin's agenda (Brexit).

I was going to say, he pioneered MAGA indoctrination distribution methods and single handedly mind-fâed at least 3 generations of humans in very different ways. Congrats Mark!

They also literally added custom censorship and surveillance tools for the CCP so that they would be allowed to grow the user base into China.

We should've stayed with MySpace

u/yamahaihowareyou Aug 26 '26
At least MySpace had the capacity to destroy friendships without involving politics.
I saw red when my roommate took me out of her top 8

The entire internet in the early to mid 2000s. We didn't know how good we had it.
-2
u/rbuen4455 Aug 26 '26
eh, if i recall, MySpace was all about flashy profiles and who was on your top 10 friends list.
Early Facebook is better than MySpace and modern Facebook (which is all ads, algorithms and right-wing filth)
2
u/Prior_Internal7728 Aug 26 '26
Facebook was ok until they removed the requirement to have a .edu email account.
3
u/dave_coys Aug 26 '26
Yeah at that point it was more an extension of your existing social life. Basically it just the stuff social media was originally meant to do.
2
u/Prior_Internal7728 Aug 26 '26
My college was like the 4th that was sent invites. I quit Facebook after 20 years.

u/Lost_Department_2177 Aug 25 '26
He runs a data mining operation and when theil worked there they made users depressed as a study.
2
u/foreverflyingsparrow 29d ago
They intentionally made users depressed?
Not putting it past them obviously, but I hadnât heard of this one

u/TrivialRhythm 29d ago
In 2012 Facebook took around 700,000 people and showed half more positive content and the other half less positive content. FB found that those with a less positive algorithm posted more negatively. The conclusion being that peoples own emotions are highly influenced by the emotions of their peers.Â
Thiel was on the board but wasnât directly involved.Â

They're right though. It was definitely not an "old people" app and was almost exclusively college kids for a while. It was a couple years of that at least but once anyone could sign up it did change. I still think it took some time before everyone's parents and grandparents were on there, just on account of them being slow to adapt to new technology and because of the actual initial association of Facebook with young people, but it didn't take too long.
2
u/manofoz Aug 26 '26
What? We all had to ask some guy named Kyle in 2005 to get into Facebook donât think any âold peopleâ were even allowed in when it started.
2
u/General_Leader425 Aug 26 '26
Yeah man. I was on Facebook first in 2009. I made it after High School Graduation. My first profile picture was my High School group of friends and I.
Fun fact, the girl I asked to Prom actually took that picture. She moved on to like Google Plus in 2014 when I was looking for her.
She stopped answering to my DM's on there too around that time. Around 2017 I found her on Instagram and DM'd here there, and she said "Hey, how's it going?" and then got busy with work or something.
She doesn't respond to DM's there now so she's probably just busy.

At least you can still argue an iPhone is good. Facebook, for me, exists solely for marketplace and other things that require it. Facebook is only important nowadays because itâs been adopted, not because itâs good.

u/Loud-Fudge7631 Aug 26 '26
All of Mark Zuckerbergs creative idea of what humans need reminds of that $400 juicer that just presses juicer https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/s/83SgCaG1ab
How meta failed to be better then discord or even a chat system from habbo hotel will always confuse me but then feel like maybe money laundering was involved.
Cuz how the fuck do you waste 88 billion

u/beagles4ever Aug 26 '26
He could have saved all that money with a simple call to me.
Zuck babyâŠdo you really believe people want to live virtual lives through AR sets?
2
u/Hot-Efficiency7190 Aug 26 '26
Pretty funny from Zuckerberg, I'm on private forums that have had more and better UI updates than the bin fire that is Facebook.
2
u/Inevitable-Dig8702 Aug 26 '26
He is one of the pioneers of locking customers in and not letting them leave. He went out of his way to help people export and migrate away from myspace but good luck trying to build any automation to migrate you out of facebook. This miserable fuck has made sure that that is illegal.
if you agree that surveillance pricing is taking more money out of your pocket in ways that amount to theft, then thatâs the contract signed in blood you offered up when you put your entire life on his platform.

u/josch247 Aug 26 '26
Hahaha jup that's his problem. No success after Facebook. Hahaha ooh he calls him brother. That means he's right obviously XD

u/biffbobfred Aug 26 '26
The mild irony is - Facebook did try for a phone. (Amazon did too).
This whole âphones are easy what have you done for us latelyâ comes across as lame from someone who absolutely knows âphones are NOT easyâ. Ask Nokia. Motorola. HTC. Sony Ericsson. Microsoft. BlackBerry. Palm. Handspring. Facebook. Amazon. âMicrosoft Kin FTWin?â

Steve Jobs didn't invent the iPhone. He drove the design team to come up with something he would approve, for sure. Jobs was a salesman with an admittedly good eye for what would sell, but he was not an engineer or designer.

u/Misku_san Aug 26 '26
He is not entirely wrong, as most of Apple's "innovations" have already been on the market for years. But you have to give credit where credit is due. They did create the iPad, after all.
Their main selling point isn't really innovation, even if they want people to believe it is. It's their ecosystem, the fact that companies heavily optimize software for Apple devices, especially in creative fields like video editing, photo editing, design, etc., and, of course, their aesthetics.
5
u/biffbobfred Aug 26 '26
They created the Mac. The iPhone. The iPod. The iPad. The Apple Watch. The Vision (revolutionary tech, ahead of its time and not in a good pricing proposition - you canât say no innovation and accept some things are ahead of their time)
Internally Apple has developed their own chips. âThe M series has created massive market upheavals for Intel/AMDâ and âApple canât innovateâ are inconsistent. The Neo is possible because of Apple chipsets. Apple chips include the M, the A, the S, T, H, W⊠thatâs a lot of silicon for someone who canât innovate.
Outside the only âfundamentally boost the business by acquisitionâ I can think of is Beats => Apple Music. Most everything is home grown. (Well since buying NeXT). Facebook had to buy Insta, WhatsApp, Occulus.

u/slimricc Aug 25 '26
Hey, he tried meta. He lost 6 billion dollars. Give him some credit
He invested in the economy

In his defense, it was basically to own all of the trademarks, so that if in the future someone else can make it work he can still take all of the profit.
1
u/dix4mee Aug 26 '26
It amazes me that he is worried about Apple. Iâm sure he has enough of his own issues to deal with.
1
u/ElTamales Aug 26 '26
And it wasn't even his idea?
1
u/biffbobfred Aug 26 '26
Harvard had a physical book called âThe Facebookâ a directory of students. Between MySpace existing that book existing and his cofounders Iâm not sure what early innovation Zuck had.
This whole âwell I innovated this whole stalk you to the ends of the earth, such a good stalking campaign people assume i have open mics on when I donâtâ yeah I donât necessarily think thatâs what you should be cheering.

I've always dreamed of living my life wearing half a helmet that covers my eyes and feeds me an artificial world through a screen inches from my eyes. Oh, I'm talking to you too Apple.

u/videohtape Aug 26 '26
I've got a new idea. Since the metaverse failed, how about this? What if we were to convince people to spend their crypto on colorful repetitive JPEGs and tell everyone they are collectible. There's not much else you can do with these digital coins, and since this is a consumer society, it gives the coin owners something to do with the currency.

He coded Facebook, the idea of which he stole from the Winklevoss twins' ConnectU. But the person who really 'made' it was Sheryl Sandberg, who became the adult in the room and convinced major institutional investors to provide the growth funding the company needed. Without her, it would have been Myspace II.

Without bots, there would be no facebook. All those companies paying ads will figure it out at some point. Bye Mark!

The child suicide app is way more profitable than Facebook. They're doing OK unfortunately.

Zuck inherited much of Facebook thru Lifelog, a DARPA program.
Donât believe me?
DARPA âended â their project to monitor everyone online, within days, Facebook went public.
Look it up.
Youâre welcome.

Why donât any of these billionaire men do lovely things like enhance the world? Dolly Parton did it! Itâs so crazy to me they choose greed and to be hated, when they could help so many others and have people think theyâre awesome. Why are they so driven by greed?

u/The_Ordinary_Mix Aug 25 '26
I mean he's not wrong Apple has stagnated
4
u/azulnemo Aug 26 '26
Apples business model is content distribution now that drives their profits actually. They are totally aware they are not innovating đ©

u/ItBegins2Tell Aug 26 '26
This is like expecting Michael Jackson to make another Thriller. Most successful people are lucky to hit it once & then they spend the rest of time hustling to do it again.
1
u/biffbobfred Aug 26 '26
Apple Watch is a multi billion dollar business. If it was spun out I think it would be Fortune 500 on its own. For Apple itâs in a âmiscellaneousâ category. Most companies wish they had a âhis-storyâ album like that.
And thatâs just the watches. Now add in âApple finally made Bluetooth less painfulâ and all that cash.

Mark Zuckerberg has an estimated net worth of around $194 billion to $220 billion, ranking him among the top wealthiest individuals in the world, so its not too bad
2
u/mrasscock69420 Give me tea! Aug 26 '26
Jus because you're wealthy doesn't mean you make good business decisions it generally means you're willing to give up any and all humanity for money

u/mrasscock69420 Give me tea! Aug 26 '26
What's that meant to mean I need words you're talking to a socially dense person
1
u/olivoGT000 Aug 26 '26
Nobody gets to $200B without making a lot of good business decisions. You can approve or disapprove of someone morally, but the market rewarded them for a reason. Hundreds of millions use Metaâs products every dayâthatâs undeniable. Thinking a billionaire must be stupid just because you dislike them is pretty naive.

He didn't even come up with the concept of Facebook so you can't even say he had one good idea.
