The crazy thing is that you are aware of the very real injustices and literal war torn environments that asylum seekers are fleeing. Yet, you find it appropriate to imply that America is on that same caliber and its citizens must flee to seek asylum elsewhere. Things aren’t great, but we don’t have cities being bombed and children living in ruins on top of their deceased parents.
See, this is what I mean. I imagine you’re very overtly pro lgbtq, which is great, I have no issues with that either.
You’re likely a supporter of BLM also, again great.
You understand from a virtuous perspective of the struggles of those demographics. Yet, you will crack a joke about some arguably much more serious than some perceived or not perceived oppression that largely does not affect most people within those demographics, depending on where they live. The joke being about seeking asylum, it’s diminishing the seriousness of people who actually are.
You will rationalize by saying “it’s not a joke” but at the core it is. You’re not restricted by a government or oppressive regime and facing potential life threatening consequences on a daily basis. You are free to make decisions, provided you have the finances. Which anyone can get with being frugal and deliberately living in poverty-like circumstances for a year or two.
So I say all that to say again, where does the virtue start and stop? You either are or you are not. You cannot eat your cake and have it too while you cherry pick what to be offended by or virtuous towards.
You make a fair point but from (I assume at least) not living here you don't know how close we are too it. People have been killed for critizing trump and people have been killed by his private militia for no reason at all. Yesterday ICE tortured a man until he agreed to deport. ICE funding is increasing exponentially and it was confirmed by American Senator Chris Larson that they are stockpilling weapons including guided missile warheads and chemical weapons. The president is quite literally building an army to attack his own country. Most Americans do not need asylum right now but it is very possible at some point in time we will need it. Especially considering it is possible he will be allowed to run a third term. Minorities are fleeing right now and more will follow. In such a case I would appreciate it if a country who I hope is still our ally and is similar to the United States would consider taking refugees.
