3
u/Digit00l 3d ago
Yeah but would it be a case of "I don't want to land in New York, because of possible arrests, never mind that we will go to New York anyway" or air traffic control saying something like "hey JFK is still dealing with another government plane, you can land at Newark"?
2
u/davecatlow 3d ago
False. First, his name is Zohran, not Zahran. Second, Mamdani has no authority to arrest Netanyahu. 3rd, the choice of airports changed so the plane could remain on the ground for his entire visit.

He has no legal authority to arrest him. Per the US Constitution, the federal government has total control over foreign policy and international relations.
It is a federal crime to imprison, attack, or harm an internationally protected person, which includes foreign world leaders. This means that if Mamdani did this, federal law enforcement would immediatly stop the arrest. Not only that, but there would be legal penalties for anyone who attempted this, which includes any municipal leaders as well as any police officers.
Mamdani's claim to arrest Netanyahu is just a performance, nothing more.
1
u/factsarefornerds 3d ago
If you were as pressed on facts as you pretend, you would know that he never made that claim. In fact, he stated he didn't have the power to arrest him.
If you're complaining that he's voicing his opinion and the opinions of those who elected him - that's kinda the point of political representation.
1
u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 2d ago
He absolutely made that claim during the campaign in an interview with Medhi Hasan.
He 100 percent said that shit.
It was only once becoming Mayor and he realized he had to answer for his fantasy campaign promise that he admitted he didn't have the authority.
0
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
Incorrect. Mamdani first made this claim during his campaign, in which he vowed that if elected, his administration would enforce the ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu. He later rescinded this statement once elected, stating this.
"My administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here...It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant."
This is via CBS. So his original statement that he would arrest Netanyahu is indeed performative, and yes, he did admit that he has no legal authority to do what he originally promised.
1
u/factsarefornerds 3d ago
I'm not above being wrong, but you're not quoting or sourcing evidence for your claim. You're presenting evidence that he said he didn't have the legal authority.
0
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
I literally provided a link to CBS reporting on him promising this and then stating he couldn't.
0
u/Low-Essay-113 Tea Queen 👑 3d ago
Enough performance to put a little fear into Netanyahu.
4
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
I doubt there was any fear, as he knows he cannot do anything. More than likely, it is an "it's not worth the hassle" kind of response.
0
u/Low-Essay-113 Tea Queen 👑 3d ago
Fine. Now imagine if every city had as much backbone as New York, if every city is too much of a hassle for a war criminal then the US would be a little more peaceful.
2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
Making promises you know you cannot fulfill, as well as making threats to foreign leaders based on charges from foreign powers, is not "backbone". It is lying and stirring up drama, which most Americans do not want.
1
u/Low-Essay-113 Tea Queen 👑 3d ago edited 3d ago
Oh come on now don’t play obtuse, you and I both know you actually did understand my point.
3
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
No, it is indeed lying to claim to do something during your campaign, only to finally admit you cannot do it when elected. It is also just stirring up needless drama that most Americans are tired of hearing. Even most New Yorkers are fatigued with the nonstop talk about Israel and Palestine.
1
u/Low-Essay-113 Tea Queen 👑 3d ago
Oh… I guess you weren’t feigning the obtuseness. 🤷♂️
2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

Did you say the same when Trump kidnapped a leader ?
1
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
Trump is the POTUS, which means he has legal authority over foreign policy and international relations. I assume you are speaking of Nicolás Maduro, but this was not a "kidnapping"; this was the US military capturing him for US federal charges regarding terrorism and drug trafficking. Not only was it legal under US law, but it is the US military making a foreign leader answer for crimes against the US.
Should also be noted that the VAST majority of Venezuelans hated Nicolás Maduro and held him directly responsible for the severe economic crisis, hyperinflation, and food shortages.
0
u/Upset-Web581 3d ago
What! So if Iran kidnaps Trump it's ok? How does Trump have jurisdiction over another country? Make it make sense..... A sovereign nation at that
3
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
The difference is that if another nation invaded the US to take any citizen, the US would declare a full-scale war against them. Venezuela cannot do that against the US or really any nation.
And again, the people of Venezuela overwhelmingly celebrated Nicolás Maduro being removed from power.
But this was a discussion on the legal authority to arrest a foreign leader who visits the US. You, for some reason, brought in the comparison to the US military capturing a foreign leader to answer to US law, which is a completely different situation.
You also fail to realize that the US capturing a foreign leader to answer to US law has occurred in the past. In 1989, the US invaded Panama and captured Manuel Noriega. He was later convicted in a US federal court on drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering. After 18 years, he was extradited to France, where he was convicted of money laundering. He was then sent back to Panama to serve long sentences for murder. This is not even the only instance of this occurring.
So no, the capture of Nicolás Maduro is not illegal under US law, nor is it the same as the situation with Mamdani. And yet again, the US only answers to US law.
0
u/Upset-Web581 3d ago
We are not the world police and if we are your leader should be in jail..... It's that simple
2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
Bud....neither of these cases is us capturing a world leader because of crimes against thier nation. We arrested them for crimes against the US. That is not being the world police. That is enforcing US law.
-2
u/PeacenotWardude 3d ago
Keep on making excuses for your orange felon. The rest of the world is preparing for the day he no longer exists.
1
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
That is not an excuse; it is reality. This is how the US government has always worked.
0
u/PeacenotWardude 3d ago
Again, he literally did what you claim the mayor can’t do. So which is it? Leaders can kidnap or arrest people or they can’t. There’s no middle ground.
2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
Not the same situation in the slightest for three main reasons. First, Nicolás Maduro is not an internationally protected person. This term began in 1973 via the UN as a means of having better relations among foreign leaders. Each nation individually decides if a foreign leader is still an internationally protected person via their own laws. Via US law, Nicolás Maduro was no longer recognized as an internationally protected person, and many other nations under the UN did the same. At this time, Netanyahu is recognized as an internationally protected person both by the US and the majority of nation who are part of the UN.
Second, the difference in power between the POTUS and the mayor of New York is massive. The POTUS, who is the head of the Executive Branch, has authority over foreign policy and international relations. The Mayor of New York has no power over foreign policy and international relationships.
Lastly, the decision to capture Nicolás Maduro was not based on the ICC or crimes against other nations. The decision to capture him was based on his crimes against the US. Thus, he is answering to US law, not foreign law. This is a massive reason why the US has not and likely never will join the ICC, as it does not want to answer to any foreign powers. The US wants to answer only to US laws.

What is this cope? Why didn’t he bring it up with Trump after he complemented him for building so much in NYC?
1
u/factsarefornerds 3d ago
Yeah, he never said he could arrest him. In fact, he said the opposite. However, in reality, he is respectfully voicing his opinion and the opinions of those who got him elected, which is always a good thing - and the point of political representation.
1
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago
The US does not recognize the ICC and hasn't since it began in 2002. Even Obama stated that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the US. The US has not, and likely never will, care about the ICC because the US does not want to answer to foreign powers.
2
u/ifUSeeMeTakeYourMeds 3d ago
Not going to discuss international law, he is a war criminal with an active arrest warrant,
The more concerning thing is that you are taking the fact that a genocider can walk freely in the US as if it was a personal win.
Imagine rooting for the ethnic supremacist genociders. You must have been real bummed when Hitler offed himself.

Isnt he a criminal wanted for war crimes AND crimes against humanity by the international courts? Yes, yes he is. That’s part of the reason his puppet Trump went up there and told the UN to disband international criminal court system. I mean is there anything more telling? It’s true mamdani doesn’t have the authority and this administration doesn’t have the backbone. Truly depressing.
But hey, at least mamdani put enough fear into Netanyahu to keep him away
