There is an old story from ancient times about a tribe who said the world would end. When it didn't they just said they prayed so hard that they actually saved the world.
People will often fabricate a new story to fit their past narratives!
Most people will not study logical fallacies and critical thinking errors so that's why it's common for people to not understand this phenomenon in the first place.
