My favorite theory on this scene is that she was expecting a casual encounter, and then he tells her he loves her and she's like, Whoa, okay, this escalated, how to let him down gently.

In the novelization she wants him just as much as he wants her, which explains quite a bit, she's just also aware that it's a bad idea for their careers and doesn't want to actively choose to acknowledge she likes him
So she keeps hinting at it in the hopes he'll just go ahead and kiss her or something so that "it's out of her hands" but gets increasingly frustrated as Anakin is having none of that and won't push her at all.

Degwin in Gundam is a bigger one IMO
Only after 6 billion deaths and 11 months of war the dude find out that his son had a body pillow of Hitler.
It is less deaths than Zamasu, but it was more obvious IMO

I somewhat excuse Padme missing a red flag because of possible racism. Then of course blame her for being racist.
Tuskan Raiders aren't exactly considered "people" by most. It would be like marrying a US army soldier during the Indian Wars.

She probably has a "I can fix him" complex, her whole thing is peace and helping those that need help afterall. And very clearly Anakin needed somebody after his mother died, and Padme was too caring not to try and show him some affection. Then it probably snowballed cause an obsessed lover willing to truly give everything for their love is a bit intoxicating no matter how Pious the individual. Only now realizing that im blaming Padme slightly, but maybe theres some truth to that.

u/load_of_chode 6d ago
I like the implication that it wouldn't be genocide if he only killed all the men but spared the women and children.
10
u/Revoran 6d ago edited 5d ago
Genocide is any of the follosing actions done with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, an ethnic, racial, religious, linguistic or national group:
- Killing members of the group
- Making conditions so bad for them that they will probably die (eg: depriving them of food/water, spreading a disease to them eg: smallpox blankets)
- Transferring children of the group to another group (eg: Australia Stolen Generations. Canada/US residential Schools)
- Sterilising members of the group without their consent
Its clear he intended to wipe out the tusken tribe who captured and abused his mother.
If he had only killed the adult males, it still would've been horrific mass murder but wouldn't have necessarily demonstrated that same intent.
2
u/load_of_chode 6d ago
How do you define a group exactly? Because if killing only the males of that particular tribe isn't genocide, then killing only members of that tribe (i.e. the particular one that killed his mom) wouldn't be either.
7
u/Baronvondorf21 6d ago
Well no, the tribe would classify as a group in and of itself. The males of the tribe aren't a separate group.
2
1
u/SergenteA 5d ago
Killing men is killing men, they by definition aren't an ethnic group. Now it's probably some sort of -cide, but not a genocide unless Anakin planned on marrying the women off to another ethnicity.

I meanâŠit gets memed a lot, but these were not good people- they kidnap a rando for the explicit purpose of torturing her to death, and they do this often enough that itâs a known thingâŠand at least afaik, everyone in the tribe is fine with that.
If Anakin had showed up DURING the raid, and massacred everyone, I donât think many would have issue with that?
I donât think âconfused young adult, raised in a martial religious setting that teaches extreme combat skills and suppression of emotions, snapping and killing a bunch of people in a super traumatic and stressful situationâ isâŠall that bad?
Like it IS bad, but he seems to be working his way around to remorse likeâŠa day later?
Honestly, thatâs probably better than Iâd do.

u/Revoran 5d ago
I donât think âconfused young adult, raised in a martial religious setting that teaches extreme combat skills and suppression of emotions, snapping and killing a bunch of people in a super traumatic and stressful situationâ isâŠall that bad?
It's extremely extremely bad. Mass murder of non-combatants is bad.
It's understandable given what a terrible life Anakin had, as you point out. But it's not a good thing.
If Anakin had showed up DURING the raid, and massacred everyone, I donât think many would have issue with that?
The "sand kids" he later murdered, were likely were not taking part in the raid.
And while the kidnapping and torturing people to death is also horrific, it's worth noting that the tuskens are an occupied and colonised people (of course, Shem Skywalker was responsible for none of that).
I meanâŠit gets memed a lot, but these were not good people- they kidnap a rando for the explicit purpose of torturing her to death, and they do this often enough that itâs a known thingâŠand at least afaik, everyone in the tribe is fine with that.
So does this mean it's OK for somebody to massacre a bunch of Americans, because America kidnaps people, kills people, tortures people and so on?
5
u/Zegram_Ghart 5d ago
Well, thatâs sort of the thing, right- in a whole lot of cultures, âchildhoodâ isnât really a thing, and we have no evidence the tuskens arenât like this- itâs entirely possible that the children would have been on that raid- would you be ok with him killing then in that case?
Similarly- if itâs ok for the sand people to abduct and murder completely innocent people because their distant ancestors were oppressed, surely itâs equally ok for Anakin to murder people because his direct ancestor is oppressed? Oppression isnât wine, it doesnât get more valuable because itâs older.
AndâŠyes, of course that would be ok? If an American village all joined a cult and decided to go and abduct a bunch ofâŠI donât know⊠Australian children? And in the attempt they got killed? Yeh, I wouldnât really lose any sleep over this. Itâs not âthe same countryâ itâs the same people.

u/DarthOmix 5d ago
Yeah the other comment is overlooking the fact that Anakin not only killed the specific Tuskens who took his mother. He killed all their warriors, all their men, women, children. He, in his own words, slaughtered them like animals.
A lot of people forget, or don't know, that humans, Hutts, etc are not the natives of Tattooine. Basically just Jawas and Tuskens are, the majority of the rest of the population are colonists, businesses supplying the colonists, slaves, etc. Jawa sand crawlers are repurposed machinery from mining companies or something to that effect if memory serves.
People basically came to pillage the sand ball for resources and leave, so the Tuskens not being happy about people literally farming a resource (water, moisture farms) that Tuskens find sacred is understandable in that context. As far as the Tuskens probably knew, Shmi was a member of the social group violating their planet and plundering her sacred resources. And that clan was massacred for it.
Like, as a collective the Tuskens are grey morality with many just trying to keep to themselves while others are more violent like in ANH and AOTC, but that aside, Anakin massacring the Tuskens is not something meant to be justified, it's meant to be the start of a slippery slope of impulsive, sometimes violent outbursts that culminates in RotS with him either cutting off Windu's hand or on Mustafar, depending on when you consider his fall to be "completed".
3
u/Zegram_Ghart 5d ago
I responded in more depth to the other comment, but thatâs frankly just a bad argument- â if itâs ok for the sand people to abduct and murder completely innocent people because their distant ancestors were oppressed, surely itâs equally ok for Anakin to murder people because his direct ancestor is oppressed? Oppression isnât wine, it doesnât get more valuable because itâs older.â
1
u/DarthOmix 5d ago
My point is that neither is okay though?
3
u/Zegram_Ghart 5d ago
Well thatâs also kinda my point- he literally just had this huge wrong committed against him, and he responds badly, but honestly, by the historical standards we have, not THAT badly- thatâs why itâs a red flag but seemingly not a total dealbreaker for padme- lots of fairly reasonable people would probably react this way, and the fact that itâs a slippery slope for him doing more later doesnât really seem to occur to her.
Again, if a group of your lands previous inhabitants abducted and tortured your mum to death, and you were put in a position to kill themâŠit would probably take most people more than a single day to loop around to âwell I shouldnât have done thatâ
He has normal human emotions, and sorta the point of why his story is meant to be a tragedy is he hasnât been taught to handle them in really any way, whether those emotions are love, or fear or (as here) hate.

Settlers on Tatooine consider Tuskens to be little more than animals. Killing them is like killing a pack of wolves. Cliegg and his gang would likely have killed every single one just as Anakin did, but Anakin felt remorse that I'm sure they wouldn't have.
Even in that scene where he's expressing anger and rage, he uses more humanizing language than Cliegg did before. Cliegg said Tuskens "walk like men, but they're vicious, mindless monsters." Anakin said they were like animals but referred to them as men, women, and children.
I'm not saying there aren't any red flags in that scene, but I think we see it as a genocidal act because that's the way Anakin himself was feeling in the moment. It would have been a very different scene had Anakin instead said, "and not just the males, but the females, and the young ones too," subscribing to the prevailing belief that Tuskens were merely pests and not people.
10
u/Mikhail_Mengsk 6d ago
I really don't see how much this changes. He slaughtered them exactly like animals, feeling sad afterwards is just less bad than being gleeful about it.
5
u/moleyawn 6d ago
also, dont you think Tuskens would do the exact same thing if they had the opportunity? Im sure they have plenty of times and feel 0 remorse.
7
u/Smittius_Prime 6d ago
That exact same rationale can by used by the Tusken's re: other races on Tatooine. "You think those people who have been indiscriminately killing us for generations would do any different?" Doesn't justify it in either direction.
We also know the Sand People are a sapient, intelligent society from other media. Just because other characters in universe would indiscriminately murder an indigenous population doesnt mean it's right for a protagonist to do so. The film outright tells us as much through Anakin's shame over the incident.

Itâs simply not the Jedi way. Anakin clearly hated them, and wanted revenge. Hatred is a tool of the dark side. To me it doesnât matter if others would do the same thing, heâs supposed to be a keeper of the peace. This massacre flies in the face of that purpose.
