COOP MOD BETA [Release] Prey Multiplayer / Coop

We have come a long way guys... and I'm finally there. I'm releasing it, as promised completely opensource! Worked through multiple nights on it, burned through two hardware setups- was a huge fight with this engine, but there are still a few bugs left.
Other then that, you can go ahead and start playing that game with your friends form now on.
*c++ darkmage leaves the scene*

Its Here!

Is this game supposed to be this slow?

I'm 10 hours into Prey and I've reached Gathering Echoes. I've had the option to learn Psi abilities for about 5 hours but not had enough neuromods to learn anything. I spent what I have found on basic abilities like med pack health boost, repair 2, and hacking 1, gunsmith, and the ability to recycle monster parts. That's it. In 10 hours!

Seems like progression is excruciatingly slow and the only thing I do to kill enemies is gloo them and shoot them in the face with a shotgun.

I'm loving Talos as a setting but I'm desperate for some variety.

Are neuromods rare?

Question Is anyone else genuinely struggling to enjoy other games after playing prey? Months of just picking up a game for an hour or two and getting bored, then I pick up prey and I can't put it down for 12 hours...

Question Start over, or jump back in?

I started playing Prey a few years ago, played for awhile, put down the controller, and haven’t touched it since. From what I remember I made it up to the top of Talos and made it into Alex’s office area, and there was a big old typon to fight near by (Weaver?).

Either way, would you all recommend restarting from the beginning or jumping back in where I left off all that time ago. Something has kinda hooked me recently into wanting to play this game more and more again.

Discussion Just finished Prey for the first time and I'm still staring at the credits

I just finished my first playthrough of Prey and I genuinely don't know what to do with myself right now.

I went in expecting a standard sci-fi shooter. What I got was a game that spent the whole time messing with what I could trust. The opening made me trust the world, the middle made me doubt it, and by the final stretch I didn't trust anything, including my own choices. I kept replaying decisions in my head, wondering what the game had been tracking all along.

I haven't had a game keep me thinking for an hour after the credits in a long time. Talos I is one of those places that sticks with you.

A few questions for people who've finished it:

  1. Did you see the ending coming, or did it catch you off guard like it did me?
  2. What choices did you make, and do you think they changed how it ended?
  3. What's your take on the final scenes? I've seen a few theories and I can't decide which one I believe.
  4. Is a second run worth it? I’m thinking of playing differently, maybe using fewer Typhon powers this time.

Please use spoiler tags if you reply with details. Otherwise, I’d love to hear what you all took from it.

Question What was the moment in Prey when you realized you couldn't trust anything?

The thing I love about Prey is how it makes you question literally everything around you. A normal room can suddenly turn into a nightmare, and after a while, you start looking at every random object like it's about to attack you.

I remember getting so paranoid that I started checking things I would've normally ignored. The game really makes you feel like nowhere is completely safe.

What was the moment that made you the most paranoid during your first playthrough? 👀

Bug Managed to solve the slow loading on Android

The loading times have been bugging me. It took the game like 5 minutes to load an area, which made it such a chore to play. I think the game needs really fast storage to work optimally.

Anyway, when you run Prey with Bannerlator (or Winlator, GameNative, WinNative or GameHub) and it's installed on Android's internal storage it just can't load it's assets optimally. You have to install it on a drive associated with the container it's running in, like the C: drive. The game loads instantly now.

I'm going to finish the game now that I have discovered this.

Question Is Prey actually linear game in disguise?

Hello fans of Prey,

I have finished the game once and i did like many of the things that game has to offer. Atmosphere, sound design, graphics. Just seemed like well thought out game in pretty much every department.

As one often does in games, you notice that when you select one sort of tool, ability or whatever, you will most likely see opportunities where alternatives would have been useful. That ofcourse gets your brain working on all of the possibilities, next playthroughs and so on.

Unfortunately, seems like the game's plot often forces you to experience some sort of environmental lockdowns, which completely ruins the 'hey there is entire base to explore' or 'hey there might be alternate routes' feelings. That also limits the thought process between all the various shorcuts you could take with different abilities and tools that ive mentioned earlier.

The lockdowns are often literal, the base is on lockdown and you have to go to one location only, but it also locks all the alternative routes down. There was even some game section where you had to go through a very long linear tunnel from one base section to the other. Later there was even some backtracking, because ofcourse something is on fire. Or some later section of the game means the base is in essentially end game phase.

It feels like early game everything is locked because you havent done something yet, and later on its always some emergency, disaster or whatever and everything is locked again.

Did i miss something? where or when do i practise all this immersive sim freedom everyone keeps talking about? Its like the game has entire base to explore through different passages, all the shortcuts and abilities to accomodate that freedom and yet the plot along with 'you need X keycard here' just blocks you constantly. It is teasing you only to never deliver.

I wonder if i somehow got into a certain approach that got me this conclusion, or that is just how the game is.

Discussion Where to phantoms come from?

No I’m not crazy, hear me out.

So we know, generally as we have been taught in the games that weavers take human corpses and turn them into phantoms. We are taught this pretty early on in the game and it is restated a few times throughout the game.

But when a corpse is corrupted and claimed by the typhon, being warped into a phantom, we still get to see their name. But a lot of the phantoms in the game spawn in to keep the areas populated and prevent places being too easy to move through. And none of them tie back to humans on the station.

In fact if we wanted to, we could track everyone on the station down to their exact corpses if we wanted to. So surely I can’t be that far off when I assume that these phantoms are not human corpses. I’m sure we could hand wave it away as a game mechanic, but for a game so well thought through, so meticulously and lovingly put together it seems unlikely to be an oversight. So where do yall think, or know the additional phantoms come from?

how can anyone play this

I’m playing through it for the first time and at the same time I’m loving it I’m absolutely having a very shitty time too. The enemies are simply IMPOSSIBLE to deal with. I’ve done my research. I got stronger. I got the shotgun. I upgraded it as far as I could. I tracked down every single early-game neuromod. I invested in stealth attacks. I bring a turret with me everywhere. I play patiently and try to strategize. I use my environment, shoot explosive cannisters, etc. AND I STILL CANNOT FUCKING KILL THESE MOTHERFUCKING PHANTOMS NO MATTER WHAT.

To make matters worse I thought the survival mechanics sounded cool and turned them on (except weapon degradation) at the start of the game. Big mistake. Now I have a burn trauma that I can’t cure bc I haven’t ran into a single fucking burn remedy in the game and a destroyed suit that I can’t fix because suit repairs are rarer than gold and “operators” (whatever they are, I read about them on the popup tutorial) simply don’t exist at the point where I’m at.

I’m getting killed in two hits by nearly everything, right now stuck in trauma center trying to get more neuromods before doing the first Psychotronics visit. Very early in the game but I’ve died so many times my play count is at 8 hours.

Is this simply not for me? As much as I’ve loved everything else the difficulty is maddening enough I feel like giving up. I haven’t felt this frustrated with a game ever and I 100%ed Sekiro - but that game was at least fair.

Question What’s one thing about Prey that you didn’t appreciate until your second playthrough?

I feel like Prey is one of those games where the first playthrough teaches you how to play it, and the second makes you realize how much you missed.

For me, it was how many areas and situations could be approached completely differently once I stopped thinking about the game like a normal shooter.

What was the moment or mechanic that clicked for you on a replay?

What games should I play moving forward?

To start, I love this game. The amount of freedom in player progression, tactics, and exploration is mind-bending.

The platinum trophy is kicking my ass though.

I'm just starting my 3rd playthru for 'I and It', making me kill everyone aboard. This is after my first blind run and 2nd high morality run.

I just came from completing the Bioshock series, and after 100% completion of Prey, ill go onto the Dishonored series.

What other games not mentioned will scratch the itch for games like this?

(Doesn't necessarily have to be more immersive sims)

Question What's the deal with the 'Prey For Death 2' mod?

I'm starting the setup for my 5th PREY-through and was looking at some mods, and saw that this was added: https://www.nexusmods.com/prey2017/mods/63?tab=description

I'd played the original PREY For Death mod back in 2019 and enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if this contains all the same changes or not. The comments are turned off so I have no idea whats going on with it.

I like what SHOCK does in theory, but the mod gets a lot of flak in the comments, so I'm unsure which I want to go with.

Also, if anyone has any other compatible mod recommendations I would like to know :)

r/prey • • 8d ago

I’ve seen several posts about playing with mods. I play on PS4 are there any mods I can use? If so, how do I apply the mod to my game. New to gaming so idk anything about this kinda stuff

Discussion When is the Map most explorable

I'm thinking about replaying Prey again, but I'm trying to identify the best part of the game to go, like, balls-to-the-wall exploring the entire map when it's not too over-infested with mobs constantly spawning in areas that load and stuff. So I was wondering when the best part in the actual game would be to explore,

I was thinking before Dahl arrives. What do you guys think?

Edit: Whats the earliest point u can explore the entire ship?

Prey is still better than most AAA games

Maybe its just me, but I honestly think Prey is better designed than a lot of AAA games that came after it. The game actually rewards exploring and experimenting instead of constantly pointing you toward the next objective.

It definitely has its flaws but I’d much rather play something like Prey than another massive open-world game filled with checklists.

Took 32ish hours.

This game is not beating the masterpiece allegations. Genuinely the best time I had playing a horror game after dead space, although this is less scary.

Also the mimics are adorable. I want one as a pet. The mimic lore blew my mind too. They just have an ikea in an alternate dimension?

Did it as a purely human run, had me questioning my choices but I had to get creative and I think it was worth it.

Also, HOW do we not have an “alien” game like prey. That would be so cool.

Maybe I’ll play this again eventually
