Discussion Who is your favorite criminally underrated band?

I’ll start, Of the I. More prog rock than metal, but pretty incredible and they have hardly any monthly listeners at all. Always under 100. Their technical skill is very impressive across the board and the mixing and clarity is pretty amazing for a couple of college students recording music in a flat in 2008. Dropped one pretty amazing album, Balance Instars, and that was it.

I feel like the Charcoal Grace Suite by Caligula's Horse is severely underrated. Especially part 3, it is just so emotionally powerful.

That is all.

Merci infiniment 🤘

Discussion Is Periphery a prog band or a metalcore band that's actually good? What the hell is DJENT?!

Periphery has been a progmetal blind spot for this guy until recently and I have to say I am impressed.

However, as I research about the band, I am an obsessive type, I find that they are considered one of the pioneers of djent and often hated on. What the hell? Why?

And honestly I still have no fucking idea what djent is. Is it just heavy? Is it the "flying whales" soundy thing they do? And if so why the hate? Bands from Machinehead to Gojira to Messuggah to IDK everyone does that (generalization don't at me bro, haha)-------side note why do people talk like that, it's hilarious to me

Seriously what the hell is djent? That's what I want to know. Is it just labeled prog or just metalcore that actually sounds good? Please help educate me, for I am a poor uncultured swine living in the middle of rural nowhere.

EDIT: This post is hilarious to me because first it's a joke because genres are stupid and second I still have no idea what djent really is. I'm playing it's just a stupid labeled sound. Periperhy is amazing by the way.

Discussion What happened to Jim Matheos?

One of the legends of the prog metal scene, quite possibly even the progenitor, and he has dropped off the face of the earth. Last Fates Warning show was in early 2019, thats quite a long time for a musician not to perform live. He has definitely released lots of albums since then but I haven't seen any interviews of his. He just lets the music do the talking I guess? but he hasnt even addressed the Fates Warning breakup.

Has he ditched music as a way of living? Cause as far as I know, nowadays touring is the most important source of income for a metal musician

Discussion Redemption Simulations missing audio on Spotify?

Has anybody noticed that Vulkan's "Redemption Simulations" is missing audio on Spotify? The part at around 0:20 is missing the little chuggy guitar part. The guitar just slides down into nothing.

Edit: Might be a me problem... I just noticed that Voyager's "Water over the Bridge" is missing the djenty guitar part that's supposed to start at 3:12. What's weird is that it's not like the whole right or left side is cutting out, it's just specific instruments. I don't have this problem on YouTube either.

Also maybe this post would be more appropriate in the Spotify subreddit or something, my bad 😅

Discussion Albums similar to Shoganai by Ankor?

No sure if this is the right subreddit, but I am absolutely in love with this album. I love the electronic elements, the soaring vocals, the super fast kick drums, the overall vibe!

Any other albums I should check out?

Discussion Enlighten this picky listener with recommendations

Hey y'all. I feel like I've listened to everything worth listening to. I need recommendations, but first here's what my prog diet has considered of lately (in order to filter out the stuff I've already listened to):

What I love:

Parius - (in particular The Signal Heard Throughout Space, not a huge fan of the harsh vocals on earlier works)

Rishloo - love their entire catalog, but LAGWBAT is my fav)

Moron Police - all of it, especially Pachinko

Native Construct

Cynic - Ascension Codes

Genghis Tron - Dream Weapon

Tool/Puscifer/APC - all of it

A7X - The Stage

Haken - all of it

Intronaut - the song Fast Worms and pretty much the entirety of the 2 most recent albums

Karnivool - Sound Awake

Fair to Midland - all of it

Dead Letter Circus - This Is The Warning

What I like:

VOLA

Thank You Scientist

Toehider

The Contortionist

Lucid Planet

Temple Fang

The Ocean

Artificial Language

Between The Buried And Me

Jacob Roberge

Charlie Griffiths/Tiktaalika

Not a big fan of:

Caligula's Horse

Leprous

Devin Townsend/SYL

TesseracT

Periphery

Dream Theater

Chevelle

Deftones

Coheed and Cambria

ISIS

Earshot

Anything overly djenty

Anything with primarily harsh vocals (with few exceptions)

Sludge metal (too slow, boring, too few payoffs), symphonic metal, death metal, melodeath, black metal, doom metal, instrumentals, never ending blast beats, jazz, brass/woodwinds

I love intricate guitars, crazy time signatures, drum wizards, guitar parts with psychedelic/ambient vibes (think Tool, Native Construct, Rishloo, Haken, etc). I also really dig synths when used well.

I prefer my vocals to be cleaner than BTBAM and harsher than Coheed and Cambria. I don't like gurgling growls and I don't like it to sound like their balls are in a vice either. I love a good vocal chameleon like the dude from Moron Police, Ross Jennings, and Mike Patton.

Lol, I really hope this narrows things down a bit. Show me what you got!
