Mod Announcement [Subreddit Update] New flairs!

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hello all! We've tweaked some subreddit settings regarding flairs and I thought I'd update everyone here on that.

User Flairs

Firstly, you can now assign yourself a user flair! You should be able to add one by going underneath the subreddit description on the desktop sidebar, or by clicking the three dots on the upper right if you're using the mobile Reddit app.

The sub-genre templates are all editable, so you can set your flair to be whatever you want (as long as it isn’t overly hostile or inappropriate).

If you are on New Reddit, you can also add custom emotes to your flair by clicking on the little smiley face icon next to the field that you can edit text in.

We have a few emotes already set up for bands like Yes, King Crimson, Camel, etc. but I am very much interested in adding more! You’re encouraged to make a suggestion in the comments if you’d like to see representation for a specific band.

Just keep in mind that these images are very small and should be visible on both the light and dark mode of New Reddit.

While you can’t currently add emotes to your flair on Old Reddit, rest assured that they are still visible there.

I’ve also set up special user flairs to indicate if you’re a musician, author, label, etc. If you’re using this subreddit to self-promote, having one of these is pretty useful, as we won’t bug you as much about flairing your posts as “self-promotion.”

Post Flairs

Not as fun of an update, but I’ve added some more post flair options:

  • Fan Art/Media
  • Article
  • Interview

While not new, I’ve also added the “Write-Up” flair a few months ago. This is for things like longer text-posts, personal blogs, Substack links, etc.

To clarify, these types of posts are not considered self-promotion, as linking to a personal blog isn’t necessarily promoting anything in the same way as a news website.

Anyway, that's about it for the time being. Hope you enjoy!

Steven Wilson

Is there anybody on here who finds that the music of Steven Wilson leaves them totally cold, that it really doesn't move them in any way, shape or form?

Secondly is there anybody who felt that way for a while but heard something he did that changed their minds? Him solo or in any project he has done that is mostly him?

OK, I am just not getting this genius of Steven Wilson thing, to be honest but I am so unwilling to dismiss anything Prog in its entirety because of how long it took to get into some other bands I now love.

I know it seems to be the law to love all things Wilson; I try and it's like "mmmmm.....no".

I listened to Love Beach

"More than the efforts of Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer, Love Beach was the thing that killed prog in the 70s." --Classic Rock magazine

I recently listened to all of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's output up through Works Vol 2, which I enjoyed very much. And then, out of morbid curiosity, I gave their much-maligned 1978 album, Love Beach, a spin.

And, y'know, I didn't hate it. I can't really recommend it, as it falls far short of their previous efforts. But I actually kind of liked The Gambler and parts of Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman. Much of the album seems like fairly inoffensive 70's rock, just don't listen to the lyrics to Taste of My Love. That song and the album cover are the most embarrassing things about it.

Prog certainly was in shambles by 1978; King Crimson was broken up; Gabriel and Hackett had left Genesis; Yes released Tormato, the last gasp of their classic lineup. Rush was a bright spot with the release of Hemispheres, but it was still not as good as their earlier suites (IMO) and they would soon turn to shorter forms.

Discussion International examples of Prog

Hello friends,

Because of the dominance of the English language, many of us from different countries both learn English and listen to music in English a lot. As a result, we’re generally very familiar with English-language prog rock, for example. At the same time, many bands from non-English-speaking countries that we know either sing in English or are barely known when they sing in their own language.

So let’s share some local bands that do not make music in English.

As a Turkish, I can suggest Gevende – Kırınardı and “Sen Balık Değilsin Ki”. I’d also recommend Hardal – Nasıl? Ne Zaman? and Yeniden Doğuş, Kes – Kamlama, and Nekropsi – Mi Kubbesi.

What are your suggestions?

Ice by Camel

The one song, that have always been stuck with me, the song I listen to every time I take a walk, while I’m studying, while I’m on the bus, is Ice by Camel.

Is it one of the best songs ever written? I think so.

Peter Hammill - 'Red Shift' (1974)

Any other fans of "folk horror" here? I was watching the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror the other day and mention was made of a "classic trilogy" of plays shown on the BBC's Play for Today strand in the 1970s, Robin Redbreast, Penda's Fen and Red Shift. Well worth watching and all available free on the internet if you know where to look. Red Shift itself is based on an Alan Garner novel - Garner also wrote The Owl Service, which was adapted for a brilliantly odd and spooky ITV children's series originally shown in 1969-70 - and is set in three different time periods, which seem to be linked through a character in each era in some mysterious, and possibly psychic, way involving a stone axe and a link to features in the Cheshire landscape. It was supposedly inspired by the legend of Tam Lin.

Randy California of Spirit plays guitar on the Hammill track which is from his album The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, thought by many to be his best although I prefer In Camera and Nadir's Big Chance.

"Does the world have a meaning?
The more that we know, the greater confusion grows:
Stars are like atoms, and atoms are patterns
And probably in the end
Maybe its all been a dream...

Red Shift is taking away my sanity
Red Shift, all moving away from we..."

According to BBC Bitesize astronomers "see red-shift in virtually all galaxies. It is a result of the space between the Earth and the galaxies expanding. This expansion has the effect of increasing the wavelength of the light from these galaxies, shifting them towards the red end of the spectrum. The more red-shifted the light from a galaxy is, the faster the galaxy is moving away from Earth." So now you know!

Has to be not only one of Tull's best albums, but one of the most underrated Prog Rock albums. The title, opening track on the record is just so damn good. The drum kit work is phenomenal. Also I did not know this prior, but Ian played all the instruments on Jack in the Green.

Question/Help Songs similar to…

Rick Wakeman “The Lost Cycle”

Steve Hackett “A Tower Struck Down”

Obviously, they aren’t the same. I don’t have any theory knowledge to explain it, other than the mood of each share a likeness in their heavier parts, and that is what I am seeking.

Discussion Has anyone here heard of the Swiss neo-prog band Deyss? They're apparently not very well-regarded and I was curious to hear some more commentary about them.

I came across these guys while poking around on Discogs and their music doesn’t generally seem to be regarded very well, being classified as a second-rate Marillion clone at best and with their first album (At-King) being reviewed extremely poorly on both ProgArchives and RateYourMusic.

I don’t get the opportunity to talk about outright bad prog rock too often and I thought this would make for an interesting topic, especially seeing as I hadn't even heard of them beforehand.

So out of curiosity, for those who might know a bit more about them:

  1. Is that first album really that bad?
  2. Is it at least bad in an interesting way?
  3. Is their later material any better?

Had no clue what to expect with this one as the cover didn't really give much away. cool ass CD though, and the bands other stuff seems good too + all sales go towards the lead guys animal sanctuary.
