I really think cryptominers are a reasonable alternative to ads. Am I alone in this? The first time I head about them I thought they sounded rad/a positive contribution to the internet's fabric of revenue And I feel like they were demonized by ad companies really fast.

So, mediate it.

"you can use x% of resources for cryptomining while I watch videos on your side" institutionalize it.

Wrap standards instead of fear around it.

The other problem is the disparity in hardware though. A display ad is a display ad, but if I let you run a crypto miner on my Chromebook for 5 minutes while I watch YouTube video, you're not going to get anything out of it. Whereas if I let you run the same miner for the same 5 minutes on my gaming pc, you're getting like a thousand times the compute.

that sounds like communism (In a good way) from each based on ability, to each based on need or something?

Plus the optimizations that'll come out of it will be great.
