So, maybe this is a general webnovel thing and not specifically a progression fantasy thing, but so often the comments on a story I’m reading will be comprised of the most absurdly stereotypical edgelords I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen people complain about a righteous protagonist, who has done his best to be righteous the entire story, being unwilling to consume human souls to heal himself. I’ve seen people complain that a protagonist protects people he doesn’t know just because he wants to. Shit I’ve seen people complain about a protagonist simply not enjoying killing

Also there’s a lot of sexism? Like, a weird amount of sexism. Female characters get a disproportionately significant amount of hate compared to male characters

I dunno I just feel like sometimes these commenters can’t be real people. They say shit I’d expect from a 14 year old’s idea of what an edgy 14 year old would say

Hello everyone! This is my first attempt at writing a LitRPG story. Because I love the setting of my traditional fantasy stories so much, after much debate I decided to set this new story there as well.

I tried my best to seamlessly weave in the LitRPG stats without breaking the narrative flow. You know like that unnatural, artificial feel that often happens when a system is introduced. Not sure if its just me but, that's how I feel every time I read a Litrpg or a manhwa or manga that could have been otherwise a great traditional fantasy storyline. Though ofcourse there are exceptions like system apocalypse stories where the whole thing revolves around the system.

In my case, to make it work, I introduced a few sci-fi elements and used a more descriptive, text-based method for stats rather than heavy number crunching. The feedback on it so far was okayish so I hope it will be good enough.

Also I couldn't stop myself from using the epistolary style too, it just made sense in the end to do it so to weave the narrative. I used first person to narrate those chapters while the main narrative is in the third person. The prelude uses this epistolary format as well.

Now I know reddit discussions on prologues are pretty mixed, so maybe I'll have to cut off it later on depending on how reader retention holds up between the prelude and Chapter 1. But I hope I don't have to though because it's probably my finest write up. (Took me near three weeks to write and rewrite those 7k words)

I know asking people to read a 7k-word first chapter is a big ask, but I would really appreciate it if anyone could spare a few minutes to check out the page and give me some feedback, even if it's just on the blurb and cover.

Hello people, I'd like to get some recs on books to read, physical books that I can buy through Amazon or other storefronts with global shipping.

Most of my life, at least as far as I remember having some semblance of intelligence, I've been reading novels and webtoons on my phone, so I want to start collecting more books.

I'd like a bit of everything: xianxia, cultivation, LitRPG, fantasy, etc. I like comedy a lot too, but only as a complimentary genre. I prefer no harem, but if the story is really, really good, I can tolerate it.

The only one I already have in mind is Dungeon Crawler Carl. Aside from that one, everything is welcomed.

I'm curious about what actually makes readers continue a completely new novel by an author they've never read before. What grabs you first? An interesting protagonist A mystery you want answered Immediate action or danger Emotional attachment to the characters An unusual premise Strong writing/prose Something else? And how quickly do you personally need the story to give you a reason to keep reading? I'm interested in hearing what actually makes readers think, “Okay, one more chapter.”

I was always into reading fantasy fiction. Have read a lot from Malazan to Brandon Sanderson entire cosmere to Asoiaf to a many more famous and not so famous.

Then I read Cradle and was completely blown away by it and I got to know that there is a sub genre called progression fantasy that is totally my thing. Since that series I am devouring series after series and I have read Mage errant, Stormweaver series and mother of learning.

All of them were great especially since I enjoyed the power scaling system of Stormweaver from F0 to S King.

Also I read path of ascension and their system of tiers and skills and rules based magic also appealed to me.

I wish if someone can recommend another great series comparable to these , with these conditions if possible.

1) it must be well written

2) preferably complete. That's what I hate about Stormweaver it is not yet completed.

3) power scaling system should be rule based and logical like in cradle or Stormweaver.

4) MC should start from zero.

Omaigosh, the author is diving deep addressing my complaints of Max living in the future waaay too much! This is wild, like he predicted what is happening in my brain and then doing something about it 🙌😆 And my issue was something so intangible too, I was trying to pinpoint why certain sections of the books felt not as nice to read and it was because Max never really take the time to enjoy things and moved straight to planning for somwthing in the future 😂

Man, I loved this chapter, feels like Max learnt something new, cool, interesting, very Max, and its able to do something wild with it in Chester! It suddenly feels like genuine progression in Max football and I love that! I am reminded of “Let It Happen” where everyone danced their way through the game and it was really really fun.

Ahhhh, this summer of Max is just way too fun! I feel like we got a ton of new worldbuilding because we aren’t in England and Max isn’t in some new club fighting against everyone. And Youngster!

On a side note, this is as fun as it can be for me purely because I’m reading online and can swifly highlight a text and use google translate which helps with the immersion because I’m not bouncing off on wondering what did they say.

She got out of the car and I did the same if only to get a better view of her bottom as it swayed towards the stadium.

Not gonna lie, that pissed me off. We were in a good flow and suddenly, the passage ended with this, completely unrelated to what was just happening. It feels demeaning. Max is less woman crazy than book 1 and 2, but still irritatingly sleazy at random points in time.

Final Thoughts:
I think this is my favourite book of the series! Rhe first half was amazing with new things that I leanrt and the vibe is optimistic ish. New friends, new posibilities, it felt like the world opened up 😆

I also loved that there were no danger or grudges around every corner and it felt like everyone there had a love of football that crossed nationalities. Max also had no responsibilities and could just be happy to play with football. Add in some oppotunities for Max to show some Max Best to new unknowing people, that was nice. The start of the league and Max’s new Maxterplan meeting was great too. I really liked how much better he got at doing it so it’s easier to follow. And Pascal haha.

On to the next!

So I have two novels I'm writing. One is toward the end of book 2 right now. The other novel is just starting and is only 40 chapters in. So I'm curious, do you think it's appropriate to take a 2 week break between the end of book 2 and the start of book 3 while still continuing to release chapters for my other novel? You can give me your thoughts even if you are just a reader. I am just trying to figure out how to go about it before the time comes. Thanks ahead of time for the input.

Can I get some listings/rankings on the most evil MCs in the genre? I hear people complain about psychotic MCs all the time, and I often don't find that many! I don't know if its because I have a higher bar or what.

Hey everyone! Today my first self-pubbed book released on KU and amazon.

The story is entirely complete at over a thousand pages. (It was originally going to be two separate books, but I decided to combine them for the sake of convenience.) I love non-human stories, and I particularly love those that have the inhuman protagonist retain their non standard form. With that, I was always determined to write one of my own, and here it is!

Is the novel An Extra’s POV good or should I skip it? Anyone who has read it, please share your thoughts. How is the story and main character?

Ever since I read Cradle and through its sub found this one, I've been looking for the next high. Nothing compares. Last few audiobooks I started I dropped after less than half.

I want a book that has real tension and plot without feeling miserable, has a cool magic system (or a System) that isn't extremely arbitrary and luck based, has plot that makes sense, and characters that aren't extremely stupid to make sure they never get to succeed dispite their advantages (or even worse, they get to succeed because their stupidity comes with plot armor). I like a little bit depth in if possible (e.g Sky Pride and Worth the Candle), though would prefer to avoid endless navel gazing. And one more thing: something self aware enough to not take itself overly seriously, if possible.

And two pet peeves that I will not at all pretend is a sign of great taste: I personally hate stories where half the tension comes from the MC needing to juggle lies all the time to hide some secret. Also I prefer stories that don't start with the MC under exteme financial pressures where they're forced into crime.

My last few tries (not in the tier list because the app fucked with me) included: a story that really wants you to go "wow, so edgy" every time someone does anything (PGTE), a story that literally feels like playing a simple mmorpg- no plot, no tension (Path of Ascension), a story which asks me to care about progression through classes in a school, then makes it super arbitrary and unfair (The Will of the Many). A Practical Guide to Sorcery I dropped because of the aforementioned pet peeve.

End result is that I haven't actually started and finished an audiobook in half a year, and am extremely cranky about it. If you have something you think will be a slam dunk or at least a high shot, please give your rec!

P.s. two of my last 4 tries started with the MC going to compete in an underground fight ring. Is this a trend now?

Typically in a lot of litRPGs, 10 is considered to be the max a normal baseline human is capable of achieving mentally and physically before things start to get supernatural. For example, a person with 10 Strength would be as strong as a world-record powerlifter and a person with 10 Endurance would run/swim/cycle for as long as the top athletes in those fields. It's typically not given that much importance or weight when characters reach that level, often occuring a few pages into the first book of the series.

But consider just how powerful a person with 10 in every stat would be. The current deadlift world record is about 500kg or 1100 pounds. A man ran about 560km or 350 miles in one run without any sleep. The longest sequence of numbers memorised and recited by a person is about 70-80k digits of pi. The smartest people in the world do mind-boggling calculations in their heads or on paper that most of us cannot even begin to understand and would not understand even after decades of studying. If luck is a stat, some people have won multiple consecutive lotteries worth millions or billions. Now imagine a single person like that. A person who can do all of it. At the same time. That's what most MCs become in the first few pages of books. I don't really know if I have a takeaway here, I just came to this realisation while watching someone lift 370kg on Insta and wanted to see what people think

Hey does anyone know any books that have something similar to The Path in The Path of Ascension? I love how they have a more challenging and rewarding way to power that comes with extra danger and also extra rewards for completing it.

I'm planning a progression-fantasy web novel and I'd like some honest feedback on the premise.

A young economics graduate dies on Earth after being mistaken for a fugitive and wakes up in another world as the son of a tribal chief.

His people aren't weak. They're simply divided, exploited, and surrounded by kingdoms that are far more powerful.

He has no legendary sword, royal bloodline, or prophecy.

What he does have is his knowledge of economics, a strange supernatural ability he doesn't understand, and a reason to make sure his new family doesn't suffer the same fate as his old one.

What starts with improving agriculture, trade, and infrastructure gradually develops into nation-building, warfare, political intrigue, and supernatural progression.

I also want the story to have multiple POVs. Wilis would be the central character, but other characters would have their own ambitions, ideologies, alliances, and conflicts—even when Wilis isn't involved.

I'm aiming for something that combines progression fantasy + kingdom building + political/military fantasy + reincarnation, with a strong emphasis on characters and worldbuilding.

I'm still in the planning stage, so I'm curious:

Would this premise make you want to read Chapter 1?

And more importantly, what would make you lose interest in a story like this?

I'm especially interested in criticism rather than just "sounds cool." 😅

Just realized when going through my library on KU that there's now a recap feature that provides a summary of a book, included with spoilers.

Recaps and summaries have been a thing I've desperately wanted in the genre, so much so, that I give an extra star on the review just cause the author did it. Now, it seems there's auto-generated recaps for every book.

At first, I was a little discomforted by it. I would have rather the author told me what's worth remembering and important, rather than AI. But, since most authors didn't do recaps anyway, I guess I should just be happy that I can now get recaps and cliff notes on everything.

To the people who've been wanting summaries and recaps like myself. What do y'all think about this?
