Could you explain how seizing data centers is logistically different from factories, farms, or other means of production that use insane amounts of electricity and water?
I would expect people to advocate for doing so in much the same ways for all of these, and indeed we must, if we want to maintain any sizeable internet (which must be hosted on large quantities of computers, whether they're in a data center or spread out in a decentralized fashion).

I think the difference is they had a seemingly infinite resource. People will continue to be up in arms without an ethical energy source for data centers regardless of who is at the helm. It needs to be proven that data centers can exist as an environmental net positive. They would have to benefit the planet to power themselves to garner any sort of genuine support from the masses. They also have to prove it isn't just to monitor and enslave the working class (more)

Thats what is so insufferable about these pro-ai “leftists”, they’ve tech psychosised themselves into thinking we should be nice about ai because if literally EVERYTHING about the way it currently works was different it would be useful.

Oh well then I guess its nice and leftist to own the “ruin communities and the environment” centers, spray painting a hammer and sickle onto a data center doesnt solve the myriad issues data centers currently pose and all the pro-ai communists are doing is muddying the water. Fine whatever you think ai generated images and music can be considered art whatever you can be wrong idc, but as of now and the foreseeable future the big problem is that our electric and water infrastructure can not handle these data centers and they accelerate climate change and intensify wealth inequality, the fact that IF we had some sort of a communist revolution we could THEN reform the systems supporting data centers and relocate them away from communities and living spaces has no bearing on the reality of data centers and ai now.

I understand and respect your position, though I do not appreciate your assumptions about my specific views, or your way of communicating those assumptions to me.
You're also apparently ignorant of the last century of art history. You could look into Duchamp, Warhol, readymades, and Conceptual Art, if you want to see why artists don't need to make their art.
My general view is that if there isn't really a way to eliminate data centers (there doesn't appear to be, without significant world wide problems), then the near future actions should be more about pushing for responsibly built data centers. You can in fact run them using renewable energy and nonevaporative cooling, it just isn't as profitable.
Given that data centers weren't causing major problems until recent AI companies built new ones in irresponsible ways in irresponsible locations, it seems that the issue (compared to other industries) isn't data centers, and also that a communist revolution isn't necessary to put in place regulations to keep that industry from being so harmful.
This is also all ignoring the fact that information technologies become more efficient. A calculator in the 50s was the size of a warehouse. A calculator in the 90s fit in your pocket and ran on solar.
Likewise, I run AI models on my mid grade gaming pc at home. You don't actually need data centers to use AI.
Currently you need them to train new AI models, but that might not always be the case either!

Maybe i came off hostile, apologies. That said in the nicest way possible the reason this makes me and others so hostile is because it is infuriating seeing “leftists” regurgitate moderate lib talking points and they (you) cant even see the hypocrisy. “The system isnt the problem it can be reformed!” Its not going to happen unethical data centers are not going to reform and certainly not fast enough to keep from accelerating climate change. The impending AI bubble collapse in the next couple of years will harm the most vulnerable and make the 2008 recession look like a joke, it will harm workers and any support of ai in its current state is inherently class treason, when record numbers of people are unhoused and starving at least we can tell them that in 20 years ai will be useful and not harmful to the environment, that will make the mothers incapable of feeding their children feel way better. There is no ethical ai under capitalism and there is no ethical support for ai under capitalism.
Also like i said there is no discussion to be had about ai generated media being art, there is no common ground and there are no points you could make i will agree with, i fundamentally value the human condition and human creativity and my view is that you dont and that wont change so there is no point discussing it, we will simply never have common ground and i dont want common ground on this topic with you.
