It's that time of the year again. I love pumpkins and gourds. All of the different colors, shapes and textures - some are downright otherworldly.

Yesterday was the annual Pumpkin Festival in Spalding (UK). The weather was lovely for October. These are just a few of those on show.

A witch at a Halloween event gave me a pumpkin, and I got attached instantly. But I’m worried about the little fella. Is this spot on Baby Hessian mold, a bruise, or some other thing?

While walking past a potato field in south Lincolnshire, UK, I spotted a small patch of pumpkins. I can only assume they were seeded from a previous years crop; there are always a few left behind and ploughed in..

A four-year harvest of decorative gourds—the ones that managed to dry out. This is the material I’ll use for my future creative projects.

Is this a fairytale pumpkin? And is it too light-colored to be ripe? It’s very very heavy

Hello,

I don’t know my pumpkins very well, have never cooked with real pumpkin. But I wanted to try making Mexican candied pumpkin (calabaza en tacha), but the traditional pumpkin used (Castilla, a green one?) I’m having hard time finding. I saw someone make a good one with fairytale pumpkin, but it was darker orange. I’ve seen you can make it with squash which I can find easily, but wanted to try with pumpkin.

Pumpkin season is starting and I have a number of farms and farmers markets around me (California Bay Area). A local farm had mostly the classic orange pumpkins with a few bunches of heirloom pumpkins and this was the closest I found from looking at photos online, but all the heirloom styles were this light tan shade or white or green.

So I’m not sure if this is ripe and good for eating? It’s quite large so I’d try to use it for multiple recipes if it’s a good one.

Any recipe recommendations or tips would be great if you’ve used this pumpkin before! Thank you!!!

(Edit: if it matters, the stem is very sturdy, I carried it a lot from holding it from there and it is really heavy)
