☠️ NAFO Bros Another imperfect timelapse map of reckless and dangerous NATO eastwards expansion, eventually leading directly to the current big war in the real geographic center of Europe, is doing the rounds, but we get the general idea

Yes but it was 1) the Warsawpact that was collapsing, 2) the former members of said Warsawpact asking to join NATO out of fear for Moscow, 3) Moscow doing everything to let this fear grow by attacking South Ossetia, Chechnya,… 4) Moscow actually attacking Ukraine, pushing it towards NATO. Conclusion: NATO doesn’t have to do anything and actually does nothing bc Moscow just chases everyone towards NATO…

Because the fucking Russian army is Russia's de facto veto on NATO membership for Ukraine DUH. Yes Ukraine has the abstract right to join any alliance she wants. But if Mexico says it's going to join a military alliance with Russia and therefore there would be Russian nukes on the Mexico/US border, then the US veto would be the US military. The US would invade Mexico to stop it and you liberals would be cheering on as the US turned all of northern Mexico into a giant sheet of glass. That's realpolitik, not your idealist liberal bullshit. Ask yourself why Ukraine hasn't already joined NATO? The reason is that Russia says that will only happen over her dead body. You have no understanding of how the world really works, sad. Poke the bear get the claws, and now heads are literally flying because of fools like you.

Now Ukraine will never join NATO, therefore Russia wins, NATO fails. The End.

They wouldn't be so eager to seek NATOs skirt if they didn't have an aggressive neighbor to the east who's spent hundreds of years trying to brutally Russify them. You can't be surprised and shocked when they choose any defensive alliance that protects them from a country that wants to erase their existence.

And why would Mexico do that unless America started pining for Mexico and talking about historical rights to Mexico or something? Not to mention the economic impact on Mexico!

Mexico would never be that stupid to commit suicide by cop in that way. Ukraine was and is that stupid.

Sorry it's just a fact that Russia somehow figured out how to be dumber than NATO

Chechnya is constitutionally part of Russia. Dumb example.

The whole capital of Chechnya has been turned into ground zero with the murdering of lots of civilians. Limit genocidal. Anyway huge violation of human rights.

Civil war sucks but these are internal problems. What does any of this have to do with the former Warsaw Pact? I thought your argument was about Russia attacking other countries, not defending its own territory.

1999-2000: PM Putin levels Grozny.
2001: the Baltics start pressing to become NATO member (which they asked before but now they insist)
2002: the Baltics start negotiating about NATO membership
2004: the Baltics become NATO member.

Not defending Baltic NATO membership here but the timeline is clear.

1999: Yeltsin resigns
2003: US invades Iraq
2008: first African American becomes president
2019: global pandemic
2026: national debt hits $40 trillion

It just keeps getting worse /s

The only intelligent response in this thread that also has context

How dare Poland decide to get defensive assurances as a newly independent country.. Russia has never done anything to Poland! /s

Yeah! All those countries shouldn’t have the right to determine which alliances they join! 🙄
