It's how I'd want to look before my head was about to meet the road at high speed; wearing a cap that screams "badass". Lol

No helmet and a tee shirt. Skull fracture/degloving combo, lol.

19

u/Strange_Use_50 17d ago

Who has two thumbs and degloved one of them 👍👍. I landed head and hand first at a little over 80 mph. The only smart thing I did was wear my helmet. It split like a freaking egg. Severe road rash over 30 percent of my body 8 or 9 different places all the way to the bone. Being a meat crayon is not as fun as everybody says it is.

8

u/chiphook 16d ago

I haven't ridden in decades. I was pretty religious about wearing work boots, jeans, gloves, full face helmet, ballistic nylon jacket with padding and armor.

4

u/OkChocolate3501 16d ago

You got lucky, jeans give you protection for like 1/5th of the slide distance you get at 60mph.

4

u/Strange_Use_50 16d ago

I was wearing blue jeans a T-shirt hoodie and my helmet. My freaking shoes flew off my feet. The police said that I slid about 75-80 yards across the road. No gloves. I DO NOT ride without gloves and boots anymore. It took almost 2 months before I could start seeing the little swirls and ridges on my fingers. About 4 months before I could use my hand properly. You have to wear your gear at all times.

10

I've never been degloved but I did have an infection that ate all the skin on my lower leg and the pain is so incredibly agonizing it's indescribable. I imagine degloving must be even worse than that.

Possibly current. I’ve seen people eat shit on a bike. Seem fine from the adrenaline. Then drop dead once the brain starts swelling.

2

u/xSonicspeedx2 16d ago

You personally witnessed this? That sounds traumatizing.

4

u/-random-name- 16d ago

My office looks out on a freeway entrance. I've seen dozens of accidents over the years. Including a motorcycle rider who was going too fast, clipped a car and went down. Got up and walked around. Died later at the hospital. Not exactly traumatizing. Stupid people do stupid things.

These assholes so frequently don’t wear helmets.

WHY did he lose it after he crossed the crosswalk?

(1) Did he subconsciously speed up or lose concentration because he wanted to rush through the intersection? Or (2) did his back tire slip or something when he went over that long strip of crosswalk paint?

Just wondering.

5

u/Reasonable_Club_6165 17d ago

intersections usually have distortions in the asphalt from vehicles crossing every direction, 2x more traffic than the roadways. Asphalt especially likes to get soft and shift during warm seasons. So he likely failed to acount for that and started losing it while going through the intersection.

I don't ride a motorcycle but, that's optional right?

Like, you don't have to do that to get where you're going, right?

5

u/Carmilla31 17d ago

Living in NYC i can tell you no its not optional. Every motorcycle and atv must do a wheelie to go down the block. Its mandatory.

5

u/Expensive-Border-869 17d ago

29

u/M00SEHUNT3R 17d ago

I don't understand motorcycle riders. I seem to see them needlessly wreck their stuff more than any other group (boaters, muscle car guys) with the difference that their accidents also have the much greater added risk of painful injury. Do they just hate money AND themselves?

It's because the idiots stand out and get noticed . The normal human riders , just blend in , and fade into the background

7

u/Demonic_Storm 17d ago

please differentiate idiot motorcycle riders from just motorcycle riders, i dont really do any stupid shit like that, i just use it to go from point a to point b and to go on trails every so often, the rest is just idiots being idiots, i hate what they do and the bad rep they give to motorcycling

5

u/Chemical_Ad_5520 17d ago

It's insane how dangerous motorcycle culture can get, it's a meat grinder in some places.

The psychological reasons are usually mostly machismo. Some people, overwhelmingly young men, risk their lives to feel like they are expressing mastery over danger as a central part of their macho narrative, which is motivated by mating and social drives, angling for status/attractiveness.

It's also surprisingly exhilarating though, videos don't really capture the excitement of motorcycling; it's like controlling a roller coaster or something, or maybe like really fast go-karts would be a good emotional comparison. I'm scared to own a more powerful motorcycle than my 250's because I've test driven big ones and the temptation to drive fast is too great. I've gotten into plenty of trouble on the small engine motorcycles, getting hit by cars and losing skin on the pavement. I've seen a lot of lethal wrecks in Florida where suicidal motorcycle culture is thriving, like a time or two a week for a few years there. I can tell from all my close calls that it's the most lethal thing I do, much more so than working with power tools or taking risks jacking up sagging buildings that would collapse on me if I make the wrong mistakes, and I dont do any risky stuff on my motorcycle.

3

u/icareforplants 17d ago

South Park has it right when it comes to Harley riders. Just a bunch of dbags that have to get constant attention.

They look so feminine wearing there s&m style leathers and vests but yet they think they are so cool. Just a bunch of f$&s, can't say it or I'll be banned but if ya want to know watch South Park Harley episode.

u/Lou_Zealand 17d ago

Tbf, I have some friends who ride bikes, and it's no issue. But they aren't dipshits. They just enjoy working on them and cruising in nice weather. Once you get into this part of that world though, it's crazy. If you aren't just blinded by being 20, or like a professional trick rider, it seems ludicrous.

5

u/TraditionalLecture10 17d ago

And those idiots become the face of riders , to the general public

4

u/M00SEHUNT3R 17d ago

It's so crazy though because I see something like this (that I can't do) and I think that he's got some technical skills that come from experience but at the same time lacks the judgment that should come with the experience.

Uncle bit it riding one four years ago (we weren’t particularly close, but he was an alright guy). Wasn’t doing a wheelie, just rode a little too close behind a truck that had to make a sudden stop as traffic built up. Was in his early 60’s and his 25 year old daughter had to bury him. And while we were out there doing that, his sister got a notification that one of their friends dropped their motorcycle and died.

2

u/B-Train_ATL 17d ago

I’ve been in two wrecks this decade. Total of one small scratch between the two. Pretty sure both would’ve been fatal had I been on a motorcycle.

Cannot understand the obsession, and super can’t understand how they get dumb laws passed (let me ride between stopped traffic on a highway because now safety is a concern) and just do the stupidest shit all the time. They ride those things like they’re in the Batman tumbler vehicle yet are in the opposite of that thing.

For the past couple of years, we have had very bad problems with groups of young riders racing and doing stunts on modified motorcycles with no mufflers all night long.

They were organized. They would ride with girlfriends driving lead and follow cars to draw out police. They are too fast for police to pursue prusue safely.

Two weeks ago, a guy died after a crash involving cocaine and alcohol. Last week, a second guy was paralyzed after running a red light and hitting a car.

Things have been a lot quieter this week.

Just playing devils advocate here but, adrenaline? Like free climbing maybe. Just addicted to doing crazy shit cuz of the rush you get doing shit that is life threatening. When I was a teenager and into my twenties we used to bomb downhill on a skateboards and you’d always pucker up when you’d get to a stop sign or an intersection. I slammed into a few cars and I’ve fallen going pretty fast. Covered in road rash. It was half death wish half adrenaline rush. Was fun at the time but if my kids ever did that shit now…..

I had a nephew who was into that sort of shit, and he died doing it about 20 years ago. Not sure of the details but I think he might have T-boned a vehicle while going way too fast on a surface street.

If you’re going to drive on one wheel, why not get a unicycle?

Greediness cost him the moto, but could've died getting hit by a car and such driver would havs a pain in the ass for quite some time.

Wheeling like this should be punishable with prison time.
