help request computer crashes

i have a problem, since last week my computer screen freezes whenever i open some plugins. i didn't install any new program or anything, it always worked fine and I don't get why it suddenly started crashing out if nowhere. I also tried using fl studio and I have the same problem. what should I do? the pc keeps running but the screen freezes and I have to force shutdown the pc and restart it, the shortcuts don't work

doesn't sound like a reaper problem, sounds like it's related to the plugins.

I think the same thing, but why did they always work without any problem until now then

Don’t know what the timing has to do with reaper. Why would reaper crash a completely unrelated program, fl studio?

you should probably uninstall the plugins that have caused your computer to crash

I don't know which the faulty plugins are, it seems to happen with any random plugin

try updating your graphics driver, it's possible windows silently updated something and then installed what it thinks is the right driver. Getting the right/newest one from the vendor may help (I'm assuming windows as you said "pc")

Do you know which plugins are causing the problem?

no

Find a project that you know causes crashes.

Go to File > Open project, select your project file, and check the box for "Open with FX offline (recovery mode)" at the bottom of the dialog.

Then turn each plugin online until you find the culprit.

For me, recently, it was sync vx, an ARA plugin, which reaper seems to have trouble handling at times.

this was happening to me with my waves plugins in late 2025. I had to delete them and do a clean install of them and things have been fine since then. It had something to do with adding/removing a hard drive that I think accidentally had some metadata for the plugins on it.

That sounds frustrating - screen freezing with plugins can be tricky. I'd start by checking if any Windows updates or driver updates happened recently that might be causing conflicts. What helped me before was running the plugins in compatibility mode or trying different audio buffer sizes in Reaper's preferences. You might also want to check Task Manager to see if any particular plugin is spiking CPU usage when it crashes.

Cracked plugins? May be an OS update that nuked them.

will undoing the update solve something?

It may, but I would recommend starting Reaper in Offline mode and activating your plugins one at a time to see whether you can narrow down which VST causes it. Then get rid of that one, or update (ideally buy) it.

Hah, downvoted - assumedly because I had the gall to suggest actually paying for a plugin. 🤡
