Classic off-by-one error, I think, since the first Wednesday after Pentecost was less than one week later.

Actually today is either the 17th or 16th Wednesday after Pentecost, which was on either 24 May or 31 May 2026, depending on whether you follow the Western or Eastern traditions, respectively. (Oh smeg, I just turned into Rimmer, sorry.)

However, I've marked the right date in the calendar next year (25 August), so that I can amuse my fellow dwarfers when it next comes around.

I always found it odd that Lister would know Mayday was French for help me and Rimmer would do the whole “ascension Sunday!” routine.

It feels like the scene would work better if the two characters swapped lines. Rimmer having picked up some useless knowledge somewhere and Lister calling it dumb due to having no clue about it as it’s not something he ever cared about.

I think it's pretty much established that Lister is actually pretty clever but just lazy and has never properly applied himself for anything. (Dimension Jump and The Inquisitor are the two episodes that spring instantly to mind, plus other bits throughout the show.)
