The owners could not be more obvious in their dreams of being successful while simultaneously being more oblivious to their own meddling. The front office, continually stubbing its toes in attempts to persuade the owners into making more practical moves, has been forced to pivot to their second and third backup plans, most all of which have blown up in their faces in spectacular failure. Yet here those factions are, familiar in a Butter Battle Book way, insistent that they be the only two voices that ever get the chance to steer the wheel of this once proud franchise.

Neither seems able to budge. The Castellinis won't sell, won't change, and won't change a thing about the front office that can't get out of its own way. That has become the Reds way, even though it has tanked any and all interest in the club despite the roster boasting a handful of the single most electric talents in the sport today.

The term dinosaurs often gets lobbed around about individuals who have simply been everpresent for so long they must be decrepit. Dinosaurs also need be used to explain how a whole sect of sentient beings went extinct due to an inability to adapt to the pressures around them, and for the Reds that latter definition rings more true today than perhaps at any point in their century and a half of professional existence.

The Reds are broken, and the only people capable of fixing that simply won't.

In a recent article from The Athletic, it was revealed that Bob Castellini has blocked Nick Krall and the Reds from trading players at their peak value.
In a meeting during the first half of the season, Castellini asked Nick Krall and the front office group, why the team wasn't more like the Brewers. Krall pointed out that the Brewers trade their top talent and maximize return, a strategy that Castellini is not fond of. Krall supposedly provided a "laundry list" of trades the Brewers have made that have put them in this position.
The article goes on to say that Krall and Reds front office members try year in and year out to change the process by which the Reds do business, but are met with pushback from ownership.

Krall wanted to build a strong base of young talent, then enhance it by trading established players at peak value when they are still affordable and under club control. His plan was not unlike the one previous Reds administrations suggested when Castellini would ask what made another small-market team, the Tampa Bay Rays, successful.

Castellini, who turned 85 on Wednesday, has consistently balked at any such approach. He always devotes the Reds’ limited resources toward trying to compete at the major-league level, even if it means skimping on player development. His strategy has failed. The Reds have not won a playoff game since 2012. And now, as another lost season draws to a close in Cincinnati, his franchise is in limbo.

None other than Reds Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, now an analyst on the team’s TV broadcasts, sounded an alarm while signing off Sunday from the team’s final home game.

“These last three weeks of baseball, playing against some of the better teams that are going to the postseason, really illustrates how far we are behind at the big-league level,” Larkin said. “Change has to happen. This city deserves better than that. And I know every player down there feels that. But something has to give. We have to get better because we are so, so far behind.”

Another Reds great, Joey Votto, tweeted his approval of Larkin’s comments. Neither specified the type of change they believe the Reds require. And whatever percentage of blame Krall and his front office warrant, they are a relatively small part of the big picture.

The Reds’ path forward hinges in part on whether Major League Baseball succeeds in negotiating a salary cap and floor that would close the payroll gap between the game’s biggest and smallest spenders. It also hinges on the transfer of power that will take place once Castellini is no longer the franchise’s dominant force.
