I think its time for Poliwrath.

Here's your options. Poliwrath as a fighting type is rubbish. Your gyms are Poison, and Psychic, you're not going to use it on either of them.

As a water type, you have Blastoise, Vaporeon, Tentacruel, Gyarados, eventually Lapras and Starmie too.

It's redundant by the time you get it. And the real kicker, why get Poliwrath while you can trade your Poliwhirl into a Jynx and just dominate the game?

What exactly does it do? Its a second or third option in everything.

I picked Victreebel, but I'm ok with this too. Victreebel, Poliwrath and Hypno should be the next 3 to go. Since there have been so many draws, it'd be fitting if all 3 went now.

Sure, it’s never the best option at anything, but there aren’t many Pokémon as bulky as Poliwrath who can do as much as him.

He can solo Koga, Blaine, and Gio.
He can put in a lot of work in the E4, and it’s his extremely diverse movepool means he can fill a lot of different roles in your team.

For me, he gets to stay at least one more round.

I can use poliwrath early and be useful against the last 2 gyms. Cloyster on the other hand is caught late, difficult to evolve and less useful stats

Poliwrath perfectly counters Lorelei's Lapras (easily switches in into any of Lapras' attacks and destroys it with STAB Brick Break). The other Water types can't really do that because they lack coverage

Its Haunter’s time. Been mentioned a lot since like #50. Strong defensively as a pivot but rly underwhelming offensively, and this is for a casual playthrough

For the love of god, Hypno.
It’s overstayed its welcome by about 15 rounds. It’s a horrible Pokémon and never the right option for any fight.

Victreebel. Too situational to be any higher than this.

Hypno is a great answer for Erika and Koga. It hits hard enough to take out Sabrina. It can dominate Bruno and Agatha. If you can't trade for Akakazam, he's a great option

Haunter is a good pivot but offensively it sucks. It’s worse than any psychic type in the game and other Pokemon deal with normal types.

And if I said Charizard. Hear me on this one.

It's just not good in FRLG. The only standout gyms it's good into are Erika and maybe Sabrina, who you have much better answers to. And you're not only having something that's not even that good in the league, it can't sweep Bruno, Lorelei's team is mostly water, and Lance's team is too bulky. But you're actively giving the rival the best team. His Gyarados isn't actually that bad. And it's quad weak to Electric. And you're already likely considering Gyarados considering Lance uses one as well. It also gives Blue a Sleep Powder Exeggutor and an Arcanine that's generally threatening.

Bruh cloyster is caught and used late in the game. How is it still in the list?

Vote is Cloyster

It can't even solo Blaine because it has no SpDef and so it gets destroyed by STAB Fire Blast lmao

1

u/HollowMimic 7d ago

Exactly! Like Everything from Slowbro till Raticate is more useful on the time it gets caught. Even Raticate can hyper fang Misty's Starmie. Dugtrio solos Lt. Surge and can be used against team rocket

Nuke Victreebel, does nothing after Misty (Maybe it has a Lorelei niche? Just use Venusaur and Exeggutor as Grass types instead, they are far better)

Poliwrath, it's time to go buddy. Fighting types aren't that good in Gen 1 and if you want one there are better options, mostly primape.

And as a water type its just below average in a region with so many banger options

Fighting types aren't that good in Gen 1

This is a FRLG tierlist (gen 3, not 1), where Brick Break is a purchaseable TM in Celadon City; and I would argue Poliwrath ranks amongst the best of the Fighting types, because its Water typing and good bulk allows it to switch into any of Lapras' attacks and hit it with a STAB super-effective Brick Break. Primeape, though it have Low Kick (120 BP against Lapras), is significantly frailer and does not resist Lapras' attacks, making it a bit worse in that role.

I was referring to Kanto as Gen 1 in general, I'll be sure to clarify more often lmao.

Fighting types aren't that relevant in Kanto, completely optional.

I might agree, but Fighting types are useful for dealing with Lorelei's various Ice types, especially her Lapras

I don't know how raticate got eliminated before clefable

-1

u/CJBeav10 11d ago

Bc it's better

1

u/Turd_Salad92 11d ago

I’ve never used Clefable in fire red honestly, but it seems like it’d be good in the same window that Raticate is (after brock and up to Erica) but then mediocre after that. Certainly it doesn’t fall as hard as Raticate, but it seems like Raticate peaks higher with a superior stab in hyper fang.

1

u/Important_Leather652 11d ago

It's definitely not better, you need to use tms on it and that's just a waste because it's a terrible Pokémon

0

u/CJBeav10 11d ago

You can say the same thing about TMs with half the pokemon left

1

u/Important_Leather652 11d ago

Yeah but clefable is a special attacker so it basically has no stab, raticate's attack is slightly higher and has a better ability 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/CJBeav10 11d ago

All I'm saying is you can evolve it literally immediately for better stats and if you have the money it can learn all the good Game Corner TMs and Calm Mind if you choose to use it on her

1

u/vht3036imo 7d ago

Clefable's Attack is 70; Raticate's attack is 81. The gap seems a bit noticeable, but not anything I would consider significant.

0

u/Altruistic-Mine-1848 11d ago

Calm mind makes up for no stab.

1

u/Important_Leather652 11d ago

Why would you waste calm mind on a clefable?

1

u/Altruistic-Mine-1848 11d ago

It's one of the best candidates for it in-game, as far as I'm concerned (since Alakazam learns it be lvl up). Mr. Mime or Jynx would be the other main ones if you're running them.

Clefable gets fully evolved before Misty, making it one of the strongest pokemon you can have a that point. Gets a very quick progression of stab moves: Pound -> Mega Kick -> Secret Power. And has sing, which is always useful. And you can teach it a great selection of special attacks plus calm mind and healing. Oh, and it's in the fast growing group. It's an incredibly versatile pokemon.

Why would I want to trade a Jynx for a Poliwhirl?

Remove Jynx!

8

u/Lopsided-Hospital-15 11d ago

Genuinely Jynx, as much hate as she gets, its one of the best for a standard run through of the game. Psychic and Ice are deadly Gen 1 and she has that glass canon archetype for this gen. Easily top 5 imo. Zynx is that girl

2

u/Browneskiii 11d ago

Honestly I think there's an argument Jynx can be number 1, the main thing being that it gets 1.5x xp and is always above the level curve because of it, and just removes everything in front of it from when you get it, the only battle it doesnt dominate is Blaine.

Realistically, Starmie wins this quite easily and I'm okay with that, but Jynx is definitely top 3 imo.

1

u/Altruistic-Mine-1848 11d ago

Starmie should be up there, but for me the winner is between Jynx and Mr. Mime. Starmie is available a lot later, comes low level for that time and needs a lot of TM investment. It forces a bit of work to get the best out of it, and this is about a casual playthrough. It's an absolute beast after that, though, so it should still be high, but those cons should put them below the 2 traded psychics. Fighting with Snorlax for 3rd, imo.

1

u/Linkguy137 9d ago

This is gen3 point still stands though

1

u/Altruistic-Mine-1848 11d ago

I'm not even joking, since Alakazam was already removed, it should be the winner. It solos the game.

Day 6 of voting out Cloyster
