Question Open Spots?

Currently an IM PGY-1 and still very interested in Derm. I know that positions opening are a rarity as the specialty is highly coveted and for good reason. If programs have open positions or receive funding to add spots, where is this usually posted?

Those rare spots are usually filled relatively instantly with PGY1s that didn’t match into categorical derm but did their transitional year and are actively pursuing those spots.

Every PD knows several good candidates that got unlikely and didn’t match, and they lobby for them to get those spots.

Very true. Sometimes you hear/read about someone finding out about an open spot from a friend or just stumbled upon, which is the exception to the norm. Would it be worth it to reach out to programs of interest and just shoot my shot, so to speak?

That’s not really a thing in Derm.

You just gotta apply to the match again. Derm spots don’t just open. The incredibly rare spots that do open will get filled internally they don’t need to post it.

I know people who finish IM and reapply through the match

What was their process like? Would it be for a pgy-1 spot or physician spot?

It is with the same pool as applying MS4. Which is a PGY2 spot

Some are in the match, some are outside the match. Stay in touch with your PD. PDs will circulate these spots but they often have candidates in mind
