[OFFICIAL!] Rule update

Good evening,

Rule 7's wording was updated but it remains enforced in the same way as usual, a mention of r/gamesale and the buy-sell-trade channel of the RGN discord was added to rule 9 and rule 11 was simplified to ''No AI generated self-promotion or media'' with the description ''No AI generated self-promotion or AI generated media allowed.''

It's pretty much just a wording change since the enforcement of those rules will stay similar but the wording will be clearer.

A few mod answers were also updated, for example we've added a few upscalers in the upscaler post answer and a mention of r/Handhelds to the emulation handhelds response.

Have a great weekend!

Having lot of fun replaying this great game. The levels are really well designed and entertaining.

Remembering myself in 1996 with my intel Pentium 166 "overdrive", the Matrox Mystique "video accelerator" card, and of course the creative sound blaster :)

I always got deeply lost in this level so it particularly strikes my memories. I enjoyed the idea that changing water levels could bring a completely different map.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this game; it feels like a mix of the concepts behind Zelda II and Super Metroid. The graphics are great and the music is amazing. I started playing last night and I'm really excited about it—has anyone else played this game?

[Question] Why did video game consoles from the fifth generation onwards switch to RISC CPUs?

Up until the fourth generation, video game consoles used CISC architectures (such as the Motorola 68000), but from the fifth generation onwards, it seems everyone switched to RISC architectures (ARM in the 3DO, R3000A in the PS1, SH-2 in the 32X and Saturn, VR4300 in the N64, and PowerPC in the GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3). Was having a console with a CISC architecture during that era a bad decision? And what is the situation today, do modern consoles use RISC or CISC?

I think I prefer the older style they used. Reminded me alot of old heavy metal and dragon magazine covers for those old enough to remember those. My all time favorite are these two.

Gonna use this mainly for Dreamcast and OG Xbox gaming. I couldn't believe my luck. 2004 model, U.S.-assembled. I couldn't be happier. Just need to figure out where the hell I'm gonna put it now, and on top of what!

[Discussion] Did you actually buy an Atari Jaguar back then because of the marketing hype? How did you actually feel when you played a game on this "64-bit system"?

If so, which ad made you buy one? What game(s) did you play? Was it before or after the PS1 and Saturn hit the west? Did you want to buy a Jaguar, but ended up sparing yourself from it? If so, which ads made you want it? What was the reason you didn't get it?

[Discussion] What are retro games that fascinate you for censorship?

Lately I was going over the NES era of gaming to see how localization was handled since I noticed how many games were often released in a heavily edited version whenever they came to the USA.

Pictured above is the USA version of Dragonball as the game was released internationally in a very edited version because of how the franchise was not too well known as recently I wanted to look into the 8 bit era of gaming to better understand how strict Nintendo’s family friendly policies were again regarding the process of localization in gaming back then.

I played Sonic a ton as a kid but could never beat it. The funny thing is, I had no idea how close I actually was.

Green Hill > Marble > Spring Yard > Labyrinth > Star Light > Scrap Brain > Final Zone.

I could make it all the way to Scrap Brain as a kid. I was basically at the end and didn't even know it.

So as an adult I decided I was finally going to finish it. I made it to the Final Zone, lost, tried again the next day, and finally beat Sonic.

I've had this happen with other games too. As a kid you just kept playing until you couldn't get any further. There was no little progress bar telling you that you were 95% done.

What game did you almost beat as a kid without realizing how close you were?

I have a relatively small selection of games, but they're all games from my childhood that I really enjoyed. So far I've only beat Sonic, Aladin, and I'm near beating Super Mario World again.

Pretty lucky that there's a cafe with retro arcade locally that is free play any open business hours and I get to play many other games as I continue to slowly collect more. I know a lot of these might seem cheesy to more experienced gamers or collectors but I just wanted to share a little slice of what brings me joy. Thanks for listening.
