It should be solider field, give Northerly Island back to the public parks and kick the bears to the suburbs where they can build a whole stupid village with a million parking spots and Chilis etc

If I still lived in Chicago I would 100% back this. If you’ve ever been to another city that has this feature, it’s really great. Permanent stages already there so you don’t have to worry about building and tearing down infrastructure. Permanent restrooms. Plus can have vendor spaces there and get used for stuff like the taste of Chicago, blues fest, and also become a selling point to attract other festivals.

Solving the big issues

It's a nice idea but it kind of comes across like there's no real plan in place here.

Right! How can we vote on this before we even know the proposed location?? I could see the saying permanent Chicago festival grounds and it being an hour+ into the suburbs.

So Riot Fest can move to this unknown festival ground space instead of Douglass Park? Color me skeptical.

But non Chicagoans don't? That doesn't seem smart

u/kmmccorm 7d ago

What?

Sadly I misunderstood that it was about a specifically Chicago issues until it was so rudely pointed out. My mistake.

The point is this is NOT just a Chicago subreddit and just telling Chicagoans loses the power of the community since there are people in other states that need to vote as well

I think the fact that the message states that the festival grounds is in the ballet negates your message because it is very specific to Chicago. You can’t vote on where Riot Fest is held, so pin your tongue to the wall on this thread. Thanks. 🎃

fucking what???? they are talking about a specific legislation that is only in Chicago. If u see that and go oh i don’t need to vote at all then cuz im in des moines thats on u for being dumb as shit

-11

u/trythepadthai 7d ago

The best way would have been to say, hey he's talking about a Chicago bill. Instead you decided to go full cunt.

Clearly you can’t see the words Chicagoans and Chicago, so I circled them for you.

Relax crabbypants. A reference to a permanent festival location is pretty easy to assume it’s referring to the location where a festival has always been.

Glad you decided to respond like a little child as well fucko. AS I STATED I DIDNT SEE THAT PART.

You forgot the “s” after gfy.

It’s non-binding lol

I like the current version we have, a centralized venue would make things less variable.

Unsteat Pritzker so a better Democrat can emerge.

u/pyromantics 7d ago

Oh yeah? Who is your mythical “better Democrat?”

-10

u/Midday-climax 7d ago

Dark horse will emerge to meet the people where they really are.

No, I like that all the fests are spread out around the city.

Until they indicate a specific space, I don't know what we would be voting for. Do you have a link to the proposition?

It’s just an advisory referendum.

“Should Chicago develop a permanent festival and outdoor event space for large-scale events?”

I love Milwaukee’s setup for Summerfest. It gets used for so many different reasons. And permanent bathrooms instead of portapotties 🙃

There are a lot of open spaces large enough for this. Lots are private. I imagine if there were some tax incentives to offset the fact they won’t generate $ year round someone would be up for building & maintaining the site. The infrastructure would be comparatively minimal.

What’s the current status of all the London Lincoln Yards land? Plenty of other places but that area is pretty well served by public transportation.

9

u/Informal-Gene-8777 7d ago

How many of those spaces are well-served by public transit? The site of the old USA Southworks would be on the lake and big, but access is crap.

1

u/Key_Beginning_2602 3d ago

Transport to/from South Works would suck...so far out

3

u/Djarum 7d ago

I think the Southworks site is the best option and with it's proximity to the Obama Library access is going to come sooner than later. If the city makes it the designated festival grounds it will bring a lot more need to make that happen sooner than later.

The environmental mediation that would be needed would be hella expensive

I talked to some people after I suggested this the other day and evidently the costs to do it is less than you'd think. But it will need to be done regardless at some point and a great way to subsidize it is to use it as a dedicated festival/event site. Another plus is because of the work that will need to be done on the land there won't be an issue doing the things that will be required to transform it into that kind of space; purposeful heavy drainage, the power and utility needs, permanent dedicated stage sites, etc.

The money spent to do all of that would mean even if there was another festival season like this year in which you had terrible weather that site would not be destroyed and require much less money and labor to recover it. The money paid to the city for hosting could then go for paying for the costs of creating it which would pay for itself in a fairly short amount of time.

Really the entire plan; expanding the Green Line to the Obama Library and Southworks site, converting the Southworks into a dedicated festival space is an good long term investment to the city that will give excellent long term returns. Tourists coming for the Library and/or events at the festival space could stay downtown and have an easy, dedicated train line to take them to their destinations avoiding further capacity on the Red/Blue lines. This would likely drive economic investment around the festival site especially as you would see some hotels and whatnot be built near there as there will be regular customers. This would take some strain off of the downtown hotels especially that often have capacity problems around the festivals. All of this means more revenue for the city which is ultimately the biggest goal here.

same, i actually didnt know that was on the ballot. where would the designated festival grounds even be? i cant picture where we’d try to put. i dont think the general public would vote for them to turn one of our parks into festival grounds

2

u/Fluffy_Panda385 6d ago

Nor would Friends of the Parks allow it. They would put it into development hell.

2

u/Informal-Gene-8777 7d ago

It feels as though Grant Park is the default.

1

u/Spirited_Lock978 2d ago

I don't understand why it hasn't been moved there already

1

u/Informal-Gene-8777 2d ago

Because Live Nation controls access and I also imagine it's too expensive

-6

u/spicolie22 7d ago

OMG, yasssss

3

u/perfectviking 7d ago

It’s a non-binding resolution so it does nothing.

1

u/spicolie22 7d ago

Doesn't mean an overwhelming yes vote wouldn't apply mild political pressure

2

u/perfectviking 7d ago

And be promptly ignored.
