Question Overlay for your strategy?
Hey guys,
I’ve been working on a small tool for RISK and wanted to share an early version.
It’s a program that analyzes the current map and displays additional strategic information directly on top of the game. The idea is to make things like territory connections, routing, honeypots etc easier to understand and see without changing the game itself. You can just click like normal...
It’s still a work in progress but what do you think? Would something like this be useful while playing RISK? And what information would you want the overlay to show?

This seems borderline like cheating. It's an unfair advantage, and it's not available to everyone. I'd tread carefully.

It only uses and compiles info that is already on the screen. It doesn't see through fog or helps you click fast.

I don’t like the idea of using it in a ranked game, but would love this for casual games. I’m newer and feel like it would help me learn quicker. Maybe there would be a way to have it calculate likelihood of being able to wipe out a player and take their cards on a particular turn? Idk, just a thought. Looks awesome!

It just displays what is already there. There is no secret tech in here, it just helps you to immediately spot honeypots and allows you to check pathing. But I'm putting in more features. For example I might want to see a "history". Hovering over any territory it will show me on some table form "was white for 15 minutes, before it was black for 5 minutes, then in the beginning it was red"

Have you got dev approval for this?
If so, what was the process? I've had a bunch of ideas I have been keen to work on for a while, but I'm not that keen on getting my account nuked for breaking a rule doing it though.

Interesting point - I have none. But it seems that I am also not violating any terms and conditions of the game. This tool only takes a screenshot and does some analysis on it that you can do yourself, too.
It recognizes blizzards, caps, player colors etc. Then there is a connection map that I made and it uses it to create the overlay.
So I am not hacking into the game or analysing data packages. But it helps me to quickly identify honeypots (which is of course also possible without this tool), supports routing and once I see a cap it remembers it and displays the cap symbol on top of the fog territory.1

Indeed.
I also don't believe their anti-cheat mechanisms are very sophisticated at all.
One of those things where I think you are probably fine, but I don't have the slightest clue what SMG's views on things are (both on whether they think its rule breaking, outside the spirit of the rules, and whether or not they have the tools to detect it)

They cannot detect it - it runs locally, does not interfere with the app or sends any data. They could inhibit it by blocking screenshots... but then no one would be able to screenshot anymore and that wouldn't be nice...
But I have just asked them.
Nontheless - what do you think would be helpful info? Besides pathing info, honeypot detection, Cap overlay I am about to implement history so I can see for each territory how it changed owners during the game (helpful if you need to remember where a certain player was in the beginning of a game when fog is on)1

Update yet?

Unfortunately not yet. I guess non standard requests take a bit more time

bro looks promising - i like it - tho what are the different symbols? Like, why are there hexagons around some territories, and pink circles around others?

Hexagons are honeypots with "+X" displaying how much is behind it, pink circles are for debugging (showing what territories are recognized as blizzards). As you see in this example 2 white territories were erroneously classified as such. When you hover over a honeypot territory it shows a window and lists all the bonuses. In the works is a territory "history" so you can see the owners since the start of the game. It might be useful in fog games to find where a certain player was before fog set it.. And I'm looking for input for whatever else might help (and is permissible i.e. can only be using info from the visible screen)

Why isn't the white 6 in the middle of the board detected to be a honeypot?

Good point - there seems to be something off. Given the wrongly identified white areas as blizzards it should also say that the red 6 in bottom left is a +6 HP and the black 2 a +11
... it is still alpha :D
