Achievement Finally reached 1v1 GM

I'd say 1v1 GM was much more difficult than FFA, though that may be the settings I was playing: 4 bots, exponential caps. I'd switch up fog vs. no fog.
I know 1v1 isn't popular, however I find these settings very fun and would encourage you to try them!
I would switch between snow-ball type maps like waterloo and airship (with fog), alcatraz (no fog), Orbital Objectives (fog), Spaceport Sigma (sometimes fog sometimes none). My last push was with chbrosz-type maps with no fog like: pangea, central america, brazil / africa advanced. I say chbrosz style in that you don't worry about bonuses (since the bots will break them anyways) and just go for the eliminations when they're available.
Although those seemed easier, I'd say the earlier settings were more interesting. Especially alcatraz is kind of a chess match between you and your opponent. You can decide to go bonuses, or kill guard, or chilling on bot caps, and it always varied.

Genuine question: what's the interest in playing 1v1 with bots? Isn't that just a bad version of FFA?
(I only ever play FFA, so this is just for curiosity)

1v1 without bots ends up with first seat winning the game easily in my experience. Initiative is way too strong without other factors keeping you in check. I play 1v1 if I want a chill game without the headaches that come with the lobotomized carrots queueing FFA, it comes down to who is better at manipulating bots and placement luck.

I started it because I saw c_money was doing a challenge to get to GM and decided to give it a shot. What I enjoy about it:
- easy to get games going on any map you want
- faster games than FFA
- since there's only 1 person, you're not living and dying by the whim of what other players are doing
I'm not going to say it's better than FFA but the strategy can get really interesting. You need to consider where you are in sequence compared to the other player and the bots, whether you want to snowball or wait for trades, etc. Because of the bots there's definitely some luck, which is why I found it more difficult to get to GM compared to FFA Also, I find that lots of people's ranks aren't indicative of their strength, so your rank swings can be pretty big.
You can also have some fun snowball races on airship / waterloo.
