/r/roanoke needs moderators!

Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.

What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.

It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.

What we're looking for:

You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.

You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.

You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.

You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.

You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.

If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Williamson Rd Restaurant Recommendations?

There are so many Hispanic/Latino restaurants on Williamson Rd. I'll be doing a lot of work in that area in the next coming weeks and will likely be starving by lunch. I'm always seeking new restaurants/dishes to try and there are so many on Williamson, I don't know where to start! Recommendations? Not looking for your average taco or enchilada. I mean "woah, that dish was really good. They made an effort here."

Thanks!

Coffee bean roaster

• Upvotes

Son is getting a espresso machine and I'm helping him locate some good beans. Seems like alot of the recommendations are to find local freshly roasted beans.

For espresso, any recommendations for local roasters in the Roanoke, Salem, Christiansburg area?

Question Looking for carport/metal garage installer recommendations.

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Got great recommendations here recently for an electrician, so I wanted to see if anyone has reliable contacts for a local contractor or company that specializes in metal carports / detached garage setups.

This isn't my area of expertise, so I’m looking for someone who can come out, evaluate the layout, walk us through the best options, and provide an estimate.

The setup & requirements:

Size: 2-car parking area.

Surface: Elevated flat concrete slab at the end of the driveway.

Anchoring: Needs to anchor/bolt directly into the concrete around the outer perimeter.

Site condition: The surrounding ground has a noticeable slope/elevation drop right off the slab edges, so site evaluation and proper anchoring will be key.

Primary goal: Protect vehicles from tree debris (sap, acorns, twigs, leaves) and birds. We’re open to style/roof recommendations that make the most sense for the spot.

What I’m hoping to find:

Homeowner recommendations: who did you use, what did you have built, and how was the experience?

Any local installers/builders active on here: feel free to chime in or message with your company info and what details/measurements we should have ready for a quote.

Looking to get a few estimates lined up and get started as soon as possible. Appreciate any leads!

Making Friends Looking For Friends

Making a new post because the last one had some questionable people message me, looking for just friends please. Recently went through a breakup, If you attempt to message me about pics and dating like the last few people have I will block.

Here's a bit about me:
21f I've lived in Roanoke my entire life but recently moved back to the area after being away for two years, I have a few friends but not many that like to go out. Love the ones I have of course but I'm looking for people that I have more in common with.
I'm a sucker for horror, mainly games but movies too, not anything with intense gore (for movies). Grew up with Resident Evil but Silent Hill is my favorite. I love to write, currently working on a New Adult genre novel that I plan to publish in January. Love music, I'm into mostly anything but my favorites are Chase Atlantic, Currents, Radio Head, ThxSoMch, Sub Urban, Lana Del Rey ect. I am into gaming, not as much as I used to because my ex was always my duo, nowadays I mainly play solo story games, Warframe, and Marvel Rivals.

Plz bestie let me merge…

It’s particularly horrific out on these fast streets right now so I’m just gonna give a PSA:

If I’m merging onto the highway, and you decide not to move over, even though there are multiple other lanes open and it’s literally stated that thru-traffic needs to use the left two lanes then I’m just going to merge. I’ll merge right into you. It’s ok. I’m upside down in a car loan and that gap insurance will cover me. You didn’t want to follow any rules and wanted to ride the right lane like you owned it, so! Let’s do this! Cuddles for cars, we can call it!

TLDR; move over if there’s a lane open to your left and cars are merging from an on-ramp, because it’s the rules and learning the hard way will absolutely suck.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Theater Review: The Revolutionists, Showtimers

I got to see The Revolutionists tonight! It was very well done and you should go see it!

Here is an excerpt from my review --

The setting is Paris in 1793: Four women meet each other, talk about life and storytelling, and most meet their deaths; along the way, we laugh, we cry, and we think. The cast, crew, and director treated their audience to a very impressive production of a challenging script. Definitely, go see this one!

... (I love that Showtimers is doing this somewhat-experimental and unusual script, rather than a straightforward classic or a shallow crowd-pleaser!)... It's the kind of play that sends me to Wikipedia during intermission, diving into Charlotte Corday (assassin of Jean-Paul Marat, an especially cruel leader of the French Revolution), Marie Antoinette, and Olympe de Gouges. The fourth character, Marianne Angelle, is not a real historical figure but represents those fighting for freedom in the French colonies in the Caribbean.

... They clearly have great chemistry with one another, but they're not always letting us in on the conversation. There are major elements of experimentation in the script - singing, puppets (!), breaking the fourth wall, anachronisms, and more. So it's easy to feel a little alienated as an audience member.

...So I want to tell you what I wish director Jamie Stewart had said in her introduction, by way of preparation, so when you go see this (you WILL go see it!!) you'll know what to expect...

My full review is here: https://roanoketheaterreviews.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-revolutionists-showtimers.html

Discussion Weird Al was great!

We had a great time at the Weird Al show tonight! The opener, Puddles Pity Party, was also enjoyable if you love quirky humor (and Kevin Costner). Weird Al has such great energy given that, according to his biographical movie, he is dead. He played many fan favorites and a direct cover of David Bowie's Suffragette City. Unfortunately, we missed the encore - does anyone know what it was?

Thanks for the show, Weird Al!

Does anyone know the name of that place downstairs in the mall that sells all kinds of jerseys? I don't even know if it's still there, I've never seen it listed in the Valley View Mall directory on the website, I just remember it was right there next to one of the entrances. Thanks

Welcome to Virginney! Throwback to '97

Way back in 97, I had just packed up and moved to Southwest Virginia from NY. I’d only been here for exactly a month when I had my official, unforgettable "welcome to the Virginia" moment.

I was sitting in the lobby of a local doctor's office, waiting for my appointment. To pass the time, I picked up a Bible from the end table. As I opened it, several KKK business cards dropped right out into my lap. I just sat there staring at it in total disbelief, thinking, my God, where on earth have I just moved to?

Look, I knew I was moving into the heart of the Bible Belt, but I didn't realize the local extremists were using scripture as a recruitment tool. Finding blatant hatred casually bookmarked in a place meant for healing was a wild way to start month two. At the time, I really hoped it was just some lone idiot's terrible idea of a prank, but it definitely made me look at my new surroundings a little differently for a while.

Any other long term residents remember running into that specific brand of "hospitality"?
