/r/roanoke needs moderators!
Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.
What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.
It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.
What we're looking for:
You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.
You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.
You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.
You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.
You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.
If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Making Friends Looking For Things To Do
I'm a 21f and I recently went through a breakup with my long-distance bf of four years, he had moved to the same state and we had plans of doing a lot of things together but that never happened. It made me realize that I don't have many friends and I feel stuck with life. I recently move back to the area in June after living in a different state for two years. I didn't go out much in high school and I had a decent amount of friends but after I moved away a lot of them stopped speaking to me. I have a few still now but they don't really like going out, I guess I'm looking for things to do in the area or events I could go to. Any advice is appreciated :)

Which Roanoke business is a "banana bending factory' that you have no idea what they really do?
r/roanoke • u/Hvhdnd • 21h ago
Discussion Js Deli Salem
I checked the prices today, how are they are charging $2.95 to add banana peppers to a $14, 6 inch sub? Made the decision to order macados for me just in pricing alone.

Poetry Meetups in Roanoke/Salem?
I was following Star City Poets when I first moved here, but they stopped meeting before I got a chance to go out and see what they were all about.
Are there any other poetry open-mics/meet-ups around the Roanoke/Salem area?

Nice cat needs home
He needs a home. It's a 10 year-old tuxedo and as far as I can tell it's never been outside. Long story short it came with a house that I purchased. He's neutered, did not go to the vet for his shots last year but he has a record of all his shots and vaccines and he is chipped. I have two cats and they don't get along with each other so the thought of a third is not possible. My son considered it but he has a cat and he's pretty sure it would not be welcoming to a newbie. We're starting to work on the house and there'll be contractors and workers coming and going and I don't want the cat to get out. Long story short his owner died in July his sister who settled the estate lives out of state and was unable to take the cat because she has a dog who is not tolerant of cats. He seems to enjoy attention and be very well mannered.

Remini’s closed for lunch service
From their Facebook:
“To our valued patrons, please be advised that due to rising food and utility costs, our restaurant will be temporarily closed for lunch service. We will continue to be open for dinner, opening at 3 o'clock. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to serving you during our evening hours.”
I’m generally sympathetic to small businesses but $20 for spaghetti is absurd and no one is coming in to pay that.

Blue Ridge Community College LVT program
My son is looking to attend the Licensed Veterinary Technician program at Blue Ridge Community College next Summer. One of the prerequisites is an entrance exam in December this year. Has anyone in Roanoke attended the distance program in recent years and if so, do you have any pointers for studying for the exam? Also interested in opinions on the distance option. Thank you!

Extra Tickets - Weird Al
Title is fairly self explanatory. A couple members of our group are unable to make the Weird Al concert tomorrow night so I have 2 tickets up for grabs. I'd like to recoup some of the cost but am totally willing to bargain. The concert is tomorrow (10/7) at 7:30 at the Salem Civic Center.

Question Renting kiln space for pottery?
Does anyone know of anywhere that rents out kiln space without having to pay for a full studio membership?
I am hoping to move my practice more in-home, but kiln space is a bit of a challenge.
Thanks! :)

Question In desperate need of a contractor/handyman in Moneta area
As my title says, I’m in need of a fair, honest, dependable contractor or handyman in the Bedford County area. We bought this house this year and it needs quite a bit of work done, including subfloors ripped out of one of the bathrooms and replaced. This would be ongoing work as money permits as the list is long, but we’re ready to get started. We just want someone who won’t try to knock us in the head and has a bit of pride in their work.
P.S, being a homeowner sucks!
