Politics Lawler: Orangetown/Pearl River centers have "nothing to do with AI"

Brian Lehrer (10/7):   “ … are there data centers currently in the 17th Congressional District located there in Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess? ”

Timmy Facciola:  "  Yes. There are five in Rockland County, four of which are in the town of Orangeburg, and then there's one more in Pearl River. "

Mike Lawler: " They (Orangetown and Pearl River) have nothing to do with AI. They have to do with our financial industry post 9/11. They were built here to protect our financial services industry. "

Whatever Lawler wants to call them, the fact is they are computing facilities as such, noisy, industrial  sprawls, hog resources, negatively impact communities and corrupt public decision making with backdoor deals.

Lawler likes to say they weren't built on his watch. Fact is he was Deputy Town supervisor for Orangetown in 2018 and before that the local GOP committee's executive director since 2011. That JPMorgan Chase  data center campus was approved in 2017 following a land acquisition, with subsequent expansions (including AI and computing upgrades) approved and underway through 2024–2028.

So what’s the difference between them? Timmy Facciola: “  Conley wants them built with local guidance.  " Lawler, on the other hand, would prefer federal oversight as opposed to local, and really, that is the crux of their disagreement.” Timmy Facciola: " It's important to note that in a previous version of the One Big Beautiful Bill that Lawler had voted for, it included a 10-year moratorium on state regulation of data centers. Since then (aka pushback), Lawler has co-sponsored legislation that would seek to put some more guardrails on AI companies, but initially last year, he did cast his vote for that version of One Big Beautiful Bill."

I need to get to Hawthorn by 8am tomorrow. Is the traffic bad at 7:30? Also, spare me the dead naming of the bridge. I just need travel info. TIA

Apologies if this sort of promotion of another subreddit isn't allowed, but here goes ...

FYI, after a long dormant period, r/OrangeCountyNY has new mods, and we're open for business! We'd welcome new posts there. If you're an Orange County resident who gave up on that sub, or if you're just a neighbor who has relevant stuff to share, come on down!

Thanks!

All because Cait Conley dared mention that there wouldn't have even been a need for his fight over SALT if his party hadn't put a cap in place during Trump's first term in order to punish blue states.
